I was drinking heavily and had a reading of 542 Gamma and alt of 164, complete with fatty liver. I have stopped drinking totally and drink at least 6 pints of water a day anyone got any other ideas to help improve my liver condition?

Keep away from junk food, fatty meals, get plenty of protein, try to steer away from things that have been heavily processed. Your gp can always point you in the direction of a dietician.

If you really fancy something then once in a while it won't hurt, just also consider alternative ways of cooking, grill/bbq rather than frying pan etc.

well done on the abstinence on alcohol-go easy on the water-drinking too much water can cause its own problems. Good well balanced diet-cut down on sugar. try and exercise a bit. The GGT levels should start to come down in 6 weeks hopefully- best wishes

For reference I had been drinking for over 30 years mainly wine and my gift was about 180 after 3 months dry plus 5:2 diet the ggt was at 167 but all symptoms gone and 10 kegs lighter. My prediction is that after 6 weeks you should be feeling a lot better. It takes time though

I too was a very heavy drinker with a fatty liver and 15 months after the diagnosis and giving up alcohol completely and following a low fat high fibre diet I now have a clean healthy liver. Good luck xx

hi there. Were you drinking a lot? Its ill advised to stop drinking on your own if you drank alot every single day. But your 6 days out..so, you should be ok. You could have had a seizure! Bless you. It does feel terrible..but I can promise, as far as the booze goes, you WILL feel better. Much. It may take a bit for your sleeping patterns to adjust..but if you have liver disease, you may be sleeping just fine, if not a lot, which is normal! Its so great you quit drinking! Another thing..stay away from salt, or sodium. Try eating fresh foods. And less fat. But salt is REALLY bad for liver disease. If you have ascites, like I do, salt and not too much of ANYTHING to drink. They often put you on a 2 liter or less restriction of any fluids, since you already have a lot of fluid.

When do you see your consultant next? Are they going to drain you? That also helps a lot, getting rid of all that fluid. Unless they are trying medication first? I hope you feel better soon! Just please stay away from the drinking!

cheering you on!

I had high ALT and GGT too and don't drink and went to the emergency room because my blood pressure dropped dangerously low when it's normally hard to control more high blood pressure .... I was very dehydrated and they gave me IV fluids for the day and then the cardiologist that I see reduced the amount of diuretics that I take to control the high blood pressure... I also now drink a lot more water just like you ...with the reduction in diuretics my blood pressure is still under control and now my GGT and ALT normal.... I had an ultrasound and it did show gallbladder stones but I'm not in any pain so I don't think I'll have to have surgery according to my Gastro ... If you are taking diuretics to control your blood pressure you may want to check with your cardiologist to see if they can be lowered to a lesser amount ... Because they take fluid out of the body .... It seems to have helped me but of course my blood pressure is still under control ... A doctor had to reduce a diuretic not a patient on their own and only if your body will allow you to keep your blood pressure low ... I don't even know if you have high blood pressure and take diuretics .... But this is what happened to me....and I'm just sharing the information in the event it could help you but not as a recommendation.
