my boyfriends alt is 91 ast 119 but his gtt is 190.. this is his first gtt done. does he need to STOP all together his drinking?

it means his liver is inflamed, those are Liver enzymes that leak into the blood when liver cells are destroyed. if its alcohol it would likely mean he has a fatty liver with some inflammation. The numbers arent massively high, but no amount of inflammation is a good thing.

the big question is how long has his liver been inflamed? short term inflammation can resolve without too much lasting damage, but long term it can lead to a very scarred liver and death.

I should think he will need an ultrasound to check his liver for damage.

why was he having liver tests in the first place, does he have some symptoms?

Yes! At least until they find the cause and he can discuss what it means for the long term with a doctor/specialist.

ALT 91 is too high - indicative of ongoing liver damage. He needs to stop drinking now.

Yes. Total stoppage immediately to prevent further damage. Take NAC. Lifestyle change. Avoid social drinking situations. Try no alcohol for 12 months and get bloods done every 3 months. If he doesn't stop he'll end up with major liver issues and it won't be pretty.

hi maryrub-welcome to the forum. Take it from me the answer is yes-at least for now. I had exactly the same levels of GGT 2 years ago. My initial levels were 180-my other liver tests were all normal btw which is quite common. I would ask if your boyfriend is having any symptoms? I suspect yes otherwise why were GGT tests done? Elevated levels of GGT can be caused by other things than drinking excess levels of alcohol but commonly drink is the cause. The other factor is the age of your partner is and how long excessive drinking has been going on? In my case at least 3 decades! I'm in my late 50's now but I can assure you ceasing drinking at any age will improve liver health

I gave up drinking for 3 months and although my GGT levels didn't drop much-still way out of range (167)-All my symptoms disappeared. Longer periods away from alcohol may well have had better results.

If he doesn't cease or reduce his drinking habits then he can expect at the very least alcoholic fatty liver with all the side effects of that-none too pleasant I can assure you-there's an increased rsik of diabetes for a start which doctors rarely mention.

I would search on this site on GGT-there's a lot of very useful info and there's a wealth of experience here.
