Slightly yellow eyes and ocassional chest pain. 25 year old drinker.

I'm a 25 year old male. I am generally healthy. I have ate a fairly healthy diet and I have exercised regularly over the years. Unfortunately, I have also drank heavily over the years. I would go through bouts of heavy drinking for a few weeks, then I'd quit for a few. Last time I quit, I gave it up for a few months, then started again 2 months ago. I quit once again 2 weeks ago from this day. About 5 days ago I looked in the mirror and my eyes were bloodshot. Upon closer look with my phones light I noticed that the sides of my eyes and under the eye lids were slightly yellow. The yellowing is only visible with a light. I should note I also used eye drops at least a few times a week over the past month (just in case that is the cause). I've also never really looked closely at my eyes, so I don't know if my eyes have always been off-white in color? Ive provided a picture of my eyelid pulled down. I don't really feel unwell, but I've also noticed minor chest pain above sternum over the past week. I'm eating the same amount of food as usual. Skin isn't yellow. Energy levels are normal. Am I just paranoid or am I dying?

is your urine dark? like tea or cola? your eyes dont look too yellow, but i think i can see a hint

What you are thinking is Jaundice, it could well be. It happens when there is too much Bilirubin in your blood because your liver isnt working properly, it can be gall bladder related too though and a few other reasons.

Binge drinking is very bad, especially for several weeks at a time, you are very young to get liver issues, but its not impossible. Yes you could have Alcoholic Hepatitis or Cirrhosis, but i doubt cirrhosis at your age, it could be some Alcoholic Hepatitis

You need to go to your doctor as soon as you can, perhaps even A&E and confess your drinking and get some Liver Function Tests. It can be hard telling a stranger about drink, but afterwards it feels like a weight has been lifted. Yellow eyes should be ignored, it is a red flag, but it doesnt mean your dying

Get checked out, certainly not dying but its a strong warning...

If you do have liver damage stop drinking. If you need a transplant then you wiil not receive on if you are taking alcohol. I sugest you visit your doctor as a first step.

Yes, go and get some blood tests done; perhaps it would be a good idea not to drink any alcohol at all until you get the results back; and its true, if you did end up with cirrhosis (due to drinking), you would be told you can never drink again, and also told that if you did drink again (and needed a transplant) that they would not give you one; so you would have to be completely abstinent from that day forward for the rest of your life, otherwise the liver would get further damaged and you would end up dead. The good news for you i think is that your urine is not dark; also i think its unlikely to be cirrhosis yet; however, get those tests done. Even if the tests come out that all is well, i recommend cutting down alot on the drinking, as one day, it really will catch up with you. Good luck.

Stop drinking alcohol, not too much caffeine and no fizzy drinks and no smoking. Then let your body recover. See your GP to gets blood tests done on liver and kidney function. No more drink, fizzy drinks, cola and no more smoking. Also make sure you exercise in some way each day, walking is OK.

Hi beauty96,

This is just a question to you, but why do you say no fizzy drinks? I know they make us excrete more water, but is there another reason? I ask because my partner drinks loads of fizzy stuff - he's not at risk of anything much, except maybe old age - but I can't get him to stop. The only concession I've wrung out of him, so far, is to drink water as well.

It has a load of nasty's in it that leach calcium for the bones, it stops the body recovering if sick and also causes osteoporosis. Best to drink water unflavoured tap or bottled. Highland spring is better cos it has less salt in it. That is my opinion. By all means send a private message if she wants more info.

Thanks, I'll tell him. I'm a water, occasional ordinary tea, and herbal tea person, but he drinks zero coke and no-alcohol beer.

its the Sugar too, the liver has a hard time processing it when it is stressed in particular and fatty liver can soon get worse or start happening

A friend has blamed my partner's weight increase on the fructose in the no-alcohol beer, but from what I've checked so far there are no actual sugar compounds (no fructose or other glucose sources) in any of the things he drinks, so he should not be getting any significant calories, unless there's something I'm missing.

Hello Michael189,,

The eye in the photo doesn't appear to be yellow to me particularly with all that white cornea visible but nevertheless , as others have suggested it is best to have it checked by a doctor.

Have you also considered that it might be a signal of high cholesterol ( does lots of drinking alcohol cause that! - I guess it may do) because I am under impression from my own past experiences and from early discussions with my GP that a pale yellowish halo around the very outer parameters of the corneas may be an indicator of cholesterol build up as well as of other things? However let your doctor be your guide.

Good luck

Looking at your picture you look fine. If you look at your skin under s phone light in the dark which from your picture you are you will look off colour. Your concerns need to be discussed with your GP or specialist.

That is not yellow eyes at all but chest pain is not a good sign. Pls go doctor find out. If result is overall good then yay. If result is not good then at least u can find out what wrong, then request doctor send u to nuitritionist and that person will look at your reports to find out what vitamins shortage, what too or what too low then whe will tell u what to eat, what to avoid. U will be so fine.

To me your eyes are normal. There’s nothing to worry about but if u have Ins then take advantage of that. Better be safe then be sorry. I have a friend that if he listened and went to see doc, he would be fine by now instead he has very yellow eyes and ascites (symptoms of too late to save, irreversible). One thing is liver and kidney, hepatitis B, C don’t warn u at all but just only pain when first inflame then so silent, quietly after that attacking body without symptoms and once symptoms show, tooooo late. Pls do see doc NOW

GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE
