I have raised ALT and bilirubin and have been having bloods taken to keep an eye on the situation, which the Dr thinks is fatty liver. Consequently for some reason, along with a change of diet, I got it into my head to stop taking any vitamins and general pain killers incase it could had been these that caused a rise in the results. Second test results showed a slight drop. Along with this I stopped using body moisturiser and other products, although not sham/cond, strange I know but thought they would soak into my skin and affect blood test results. My question is, if you did, do you still use moisturisers and skin products or have you also stopped?

There are a lot of quite safe and natural products you can use. Dryness of the skin can be an effect of a liver conditioner, and a little tenderness with yourself can only do you some good. I use pure coconut oil on my skin, which is an excellent moisturiser. Sounds a bit yucky but really smooth . Pure coconut oil has no smell and no chemicals. On my nails I use sudocrem ( baby rash cream ) under the nail beds and tips and massage into the nails. It works wonders and my nails are long, strong and healthy. Cosset yourself , take care .

Dear mrsk63,

The treatment for a fatty liver is a healthy diet and regular exercise, I am glad to hear you have undertaken these changes and are doing well also, that you blood results are coming down due to this.

With regards to pain killers such as paracetamol with mild fatty liver as long as you do not take too many then these should not affect your liver however, it is a good idea to remember that whatever medications or substances you take are processed by the liver and therefore there is a small chance it could affect it.

There is no evidence to suggest using moisturisers, shampoos, conditioners or other products on your skin will affect your liver, as with any product you may have a skin reaction but this is unlikely to be caused by your liver condition. Some people with a liver condition do find they get itchy skin this is caused by a build-up of bilirubin in the body and can be treated with creams from your doctor.

For more information on fatty liver disease please look at our publication on our website: britishlivertrust.org.uk/pu... or if you email me you contact details I can send you a hard copy in the post: sandy.forsyth@britishliverrust.org.uk

Thank you for your replies. Silly to worry I know, as all the worring in the world doesn't change things, but as I haven't been offered a scan I don't know the severity of things. I swim alot and my skin isn't unduly dry, itchy/tingling on my back mainly, but its nice to have a bit of a pamper. I shall go back to using my Bio Oil....Although I'll wait until next Monday as thats when my next blood test is due and if the results are high I shall think it is down to the oill. I am a strange one.

Thanks for the link Sandy, will have a look through.
