1) Ring the British Liver Trust and ask if their 2013 'Roadshow' with fibroscan machine is coming any where near to you.

2) Go to your GP, discuss your worries, and see if they think a fibroscan on the NHS is warranted. (Aren't we lucky we can have them on the NHS if needed - see cost below).

3) Go private. If you 'google' private-hospital-fibroscan it will bring up results including hospitals that offer fibroscans privately. Of course they don't all tell you how much it will cost, you have to email or ring for that! The London Clinic charges £300 and another £80 for blood tests and consultation with a Consultant Hepatologist.

Is there something about your health or your lifestyle that makes you think a fibroscan would be a good idea?

the amount of alcohol that I have consumed in my life may be cause for concern.

hi drummbear-before you shell out £300 for fiBroscan might be woth getting a full liver panel done first-cost about £120 at the london clinic mentioned by bolly and others... what symptoms are you getting if any?

Will do as you recommend. No symptoms as of yet but a few of my friends and colleagues have recently been diagnosed with liver problems of various types and the one common factor appears to be alcohol.

ok well firstly good news that you have no symptoms-at this point I would do as bolly suggests and go through the NHS-by the time you get a GP appointment and a blood test organised it'll take a month. Could you wait for that? In the meantime I would start thinking about reducing your alcohol intake now-let's say you were drinking 42 units per week (double the recommended max)for the sake of argument then a good start would be to aim for 21 units with a couple of alcohol free days mixed in. Don't be tempted to go cold turkey or you could get some serious withdrawal issues like I did which have taken 2-3 months to clear up. Keep us posted and good luck

As you are worried about your liver drummbear, my advice would be to go to your GP, fess up to your history of drinking, and as briccolone says ask for a liver panel (or Liver Function Test) to be run. Its free if your GP does it and results take about a week to come back.

If you can go to your GP and have it done on the NHS, as others have suggested here, that would be my first choice. However, If you want an independent opinion (Fibroscan)done privately I can suggest The London Clinic ...look it up on internet for all the information you need regarding procedures and costs of a Fibroscan. . I would recommend having the consultation as well. I attended this clinic for a second opinion and found it very professional. I have spent more money to have my car repaired than on this scan..
