Child Pugh and MELD scores

Does anyone understand these scoring systems and how there are used. Had my review and they discussed them. Looked on web but got more confused, eg are these calculated upon initial diagnosis or later results. ie child's Pugh on admission I was 9/10 class C now 7 Class B.

They are continually reassessed based on your bloodwork (at least the MELD is). This is how they prioritise.

If you've gone from a C to a B Andy, that's brilliant. Child's Pugh is a 'points' calculation based on your albumin, bilirubin, clotting rate and whether you have ascites and HE. The lower the points the healthier your liver is, so one of more of those elements have improved in your case, which is positive.

I think the MELD scoring system is more common in the US.

They were both introduced primarily to prioritise people on the transplant list, because they supposedly calculate how long you will survive while waiting for an organ.

As you're not on the transplant list, Andy, this is pretty much just an assessment of your overall liver health to add into the mix of your other stuff like blood tests, scans etc and how you are responding to the medication.

Pat on the back, you seem to be going in the right direction - or your liver health does - enjoy your holiday.

Thanks bolly thought you might confirm my thoughts from web. Yes seems to have stabilised, symptoms still there but controlled. They still seem to be taking me down blind alleys and opening up other issues/concerns. As mentioned my blood sugars are borderline diabetic at 8-9 at fasting. Now got two gastro entrologist appointments one in Barnsley standard and liver specialist chesterfield/Sheffield, still not sure why my FBC and ESR all out. Now referred to Neurologist and yesterday got letter saying they might conduct a MRI on brain and spin. Hep B/C seems to be a blind alley, but new bloods Tuesday. On top of above been signed off work for 3 months by doctors and DWP over me and hac my ESA medical assement yesterday! Oh dentist for two fillings nothing to do with ALD. After all the years of paying NI and not one NHS intervention I am keeping them busy!!!

Holiday great, but little warning if in similar situation, prepare,,,flight and journey took it out of me, heat sapped my strength and going up mount tiede with thin air might not have been best idea...but chilled relaxed and charged up abit.

Hope you and all are okay.

Hi Andy. Glad you got the holiday (I was a little anxious something might go a little awry when you were so far away!). Have they confirmed you DONT have Hep B or C then? There was a time when you thought you had Hep B.

Your diary must be packed with appointments, gets wearing after a while doesn't it. Hope it calms down for you, but at least you are being checked from top to toe. Is this a new specialist in Sheffield?

I had a bit of a bummer at latest hepatology clinic. Was introduced to transplant specialist from Queen Elizabeth Birmingham and told I wouldn't be advised to have surgery if HCC recurred but would be invited to Birmingham and assessed for transplant. That's taking a while to get my head round.
