10k run #8 : felt slow - measured fast

Whilst hubby is protesting for better climate policies up in Glasgow, I and sonny was left behind as I needed to do some work-work from home.

But it also gave me the opportunity to not break my pattern and run my 8th 10k. I chose to run to a podcast today, which is different from my usual running to the beat of my music lists, which keep me bouncily running along.

1st km felt very heavy and my back ached. I was considering if it might mean I’d only do a 5k but was wanting to see if it was just the warm-up phase.

And in the first 3k I was wondering what it was, from missing out on my thyroid medication for 3 days when it ran out, new eye glasses 🤓 , to overtraining.

But by 5k, when Runkeeper told me my stats, I realised I had run one of my fastest 5k! So due to not running to the beat of any music and/or due to my latest interval training sessions, it might have meant that my cadence was higher than usual, but for a 10k it was probably too fast.

I thus consciously slowed down and the next 3k felt actually comfortable, and only the last 2ks of my 10k felt again a bit exhausting, especially as Runkeeper stopped at some point and lost a whole km! But I know this route, so Runkeeper couldn’t tell me I hadn’t just run 10k!

And I finished. And surprisingly it was the fastest 10k I have run. It didn’t feel like that, it felt slow and effort intensive, and this was somehow less satisfying than slow runs that feel fast 🤣🤣, but I’ll take it!

Next week on my plan is one hill sprint (my first ever), one street run Strava art exploration ( 🙃 ) and one 10k run to my Spotify list!

Happy running everyone!

Congrats for your fastest 5k and 10k CBDB!It is amazing how perception changes when you run to the music and to podcast. Tbh I have not been running to the Runkeeper podcast yet, I usually run to the Spotify music playlist or in the past obviously to the C25k podcasts.

Yeah, Spotify playlists are the norm for me as well. The podcast was a normal podcast (speech) not even about running, rather true crime. So it didn’t give me a beat. I ran Runkeeper in the background, as I usually do for stats.

Yes, perceptions are weird sometimes.

Well done! 🙂

There are those times when perception and performance don’t tally. I see it works the other way too, I think I’m running well but - absolutely no achievements at the end!! Wha?!!!

🤣🤣 yeah! I’ve had more of those moments 🤣😂😂

It's strange, isn't it? Often the ones you feel are slow are in reality the faster ones.

Weird, yes. It’s nice to experience it this way around as well! 🤣🙃

My guess is that it's how things work. It's a sign you're getting stronger.

Yes, and I now think that listening to music might also be holding me back a bit, as I tend to then slot into a cadence whereas listening to a talk-podcasts frees my cadence.

You’re doing so well, keeping up with your consolidation plan. Impressive work, CBDB ! And then smashing your own records too.💫 🙌🙌💫 It is really interesting how we can so easily misjudge our own ‘feel’ for a run. There must be an explanation somewhere for this phenomenon. I guess the upside is to find oneself surprised; keeps us on our toes!

Very well done on your fastest 5km and your 10km your a Star ⭐️ I was a bit like that this morning it felt easier than some runs I’ve done, pro should have went to 10 km but can do another day. The 8 km was a Strava one, I like Spotify as well music, probably podcast for my walking , great effort👏👏

Well it would feel hard if you were going faster but it sounds amazing, starting too fast is something I do but i realise when i get puffed out

CBDB profile image

👍🏽💪 I only realised why I felt more puffed out when I realised at 5k I was running faster.

It’s good when that happens. It shows our legs have become stronger and our stamina just has to catch up! 🤣🤣

Yes that’s true isn’t that great too?

Well done on your 2 PB's! Cadence can do a lot, I have been running at a slightly higher cadence for my last few runs too and was going faster than normal (though I don't want to run faster).

Yeah, I realised I probably have to work on my cadence to get faster. But a year ago my knees did let me know they didn’t like Intervall work. A year later and they are much happier/stronger with me doing cadence and interval work. Upwards and onwards!
