Sunday morning 5K ☀️

What a glorious morning for a run! I wasn’t sure if I was going to go, after a rather large Indian Takeaway last night, with second helpings involved. I was sure I would be feeling sluggish, but I was up and the sun was inviting. Still a little chilly. Although I knew I would soon warm up, I don’t like to feel cold at the start of a run. Short sleeved t-shirt with lightweight jacket, neck buff, running tights and sun visor. I dispensed with checking in the mirror until after I’ve had my hair done 😂.

Of I go on my slightly uphill warm up walk. ‘Hills are your friends’, I tell myself! I didn’t really want to run 5K so I would keep my options open, with this route I could. Off I go. Freddie singing ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’ 🎶 . First 2 kms are slightly downhill and I’m not feeling sluggish. I don’t know what it is about the 3rd km on this route. It’s an incline, but it’s not much and I should be able to deal with it without being a drama Queen! I decide after all that I will do another 5K today.

The 4th km is more of an incline and I plod upwards ‘Hills are your friends’. I deal with this one much better! I stop briefly to take off my jacket and take a photo.

Now I’m at the top of the lane where I live. The 5th km is slightly uphill at the start, then downhill to the end of the run. This time I feel like I’m flying. Past my home, cross the road and down a steeper bit until I reach 5K. That felt good! I enjoyed this run more than I have others since I moved. 😊

Home for stretches and coffee. I notice that my brother and father are still sound asleep!

Splits: 7:58, 7:39, 7:47, 7:24, 6:34

I love your hills are your friends mantra 😊. It sounds as though you had a lovely run - you made the best of an early start while your family snoozed! I did my own horrible hill this morning and it wasn’t very friendly - I shall try to look on it in a different light in the future 😄👍👏🏼🏃‍♀️.

The mantra works! I say it out loud. Good luck next time with your horrible hill 😊. I also imagine my improved endurance!

Well done! Pretty good negative trend to the splits, given the hills.

Thanks, nowster 😊. Yes, I was pleased with the negative trend. Just need to deal with that 3rd km and stop being a wuss about it! Then I’ll try a different route.

I hated hills too (I still do to some extent) but I'm finding that the more I do them the more I can do them.

That’s what I’m banking on! I really feel it in my legs, just not used to it.

A good 5k there Jools !Looks like your settling in .

Can we put the negative splits down to that Indian takeaway ? 🤔🤣

Today was a 3.5 for me 😁

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to Instructor57

Obviously I need to have more Indian takeaways! No problem there ....😂

India has just been placed on the red list .... Beware those takeaways 😂

Great run for you today Jools2020, almost negative splits, lovely photo of the area you ran in.

Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to AlMorr

Thanks, Al. The photo was the only scenic part of the run and a view from the road! It’s very built up round here, I was running through housing estates for most of the run. In time, I will drive to a local park to run. 😊

What a lovely run, I found myself smiling as I read and the photo is beautiful, sounds like you are getting to grips with those hills, great progress, I’m slightly jealous of your pace but hey I will get faster now I’ve found my enthusiasm

Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

Thanks, Sola. The pace will come if you want it to! We’ve just got to keep getting out there and do some longer runs, too.

Hills? What hills 😂

I can relate, I’ve never run over the railway bridge before, not what you’d call a hill but it goes up, and I did it today albeit rather slowly but it will get easier and faster, it took me back to my 20’s when i couldn’t peddle my bike up with a 5yr old on the back and then one day i managed it and felt so happy

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

I’m sure that’s what will happen with my slopes. I’m on a mission now! I did much better today and I’m looking forward to feeling like you did when you successfully managed that hill on your bike!

How super satisfying that must have been to return to a house still aslumber with 5k under your belt for the day!

Take extra care on those downhills, though... I was reading only yesterday about their role in IT Band Syndrome, which is common in runners. We tend to wince at the thought of uphill (for obvious reasons), but the risk of injury is in the down.

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to GailXrunning

Thank you - the downward incline on the last km is gradual, with one short steeper part where I took care 😊

Sounds like your getting more used to the new routes! If the weather stays like this, i'll have to start earlier, at least for a longer run!! 🥵

Aaaaah...I’m glad that hills are becoming your friends 😉

I was talking to my son on Saturday about my 10k Lockdown route...when I said I run up hollyBush way, he said “no way! That’s a horrible incline”...I felt quite chuffed ☺️

Happy running! 🏃🏻‍♀️⛰🥰

I’m sure you did! My sons have got used to me running now. I know they’re proud of me, but when I talk about it their eyes start to glaze over .....

That was Mr. L on Saturday 😴... We sat in our son’s (D) front garden and talked running...D, his partner R, and their 14yr old L all run...😂

Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to LottieMW

That’s brilliant! Well, maybe not for Mr L, but certainly for you!

We might end up running the London Vitality 10K together...apparently we’ve all entered 😂

They’ll have to give me a head start though!
