Recovery update : My trail shoes are now walking shoes!

Hi all, I'm still on the IC after my ankle break, but I'm improving all the time. I can now walk around more or less normally, the limping only starts when I'm tired at the end of a long walk and my concentration slips. I can sort myself out though, as soon as I realise.

Following advice from on here, I'm wearing my trail shoes for walking in. My Achilles grumbles for a minute, but then I can keep going for ages. I'm guessing that's because of the flatter profile of my trail shoes. I tried wearing my walking boots once and they really hurt!

I'm back to normal Pilates, downward dogs, heel raises, all the good stuff. An interesting side effect is that as my ankle gets stronger and the exercises get harder, I'm getting twinges in new places! Hips and knees, lower back. So I'm looking up stretches to help with those as well. It's like painting the Forth bridge ๐Ÿ˜Seeing my NHS physio again next week, I'm hoping she'll be pleased with my progress, it feels like I've made a lot recently.

The photo is from a canal walk, the autumn hedges are beautiful, and it's so good to get out to see them.

Hi there GOG, itโ€™s good to hear from you. Lovely photo with such vibrant colour! ๐Ÿ˜„Itโ€™s great to hear that you are recovering gradually, - those runs will politely wait until you are ready.

(Iโ€™m just creeping off the IC too, after another flare up of PF. Short, gentle joggettes is the rule for now. )

Take care ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜˜

Hi Gog,

I'm pleased to hear you are doing so well, and that your injury is improving.

I found wearing my running shoes more comfy for walking in too, luckily mine was during the spring/summer so walking shoes were less necessary.

Keep up the physio exercises they really do help, your physio will be very pleased with your progress and can give you ideas for strenghening the other areas.

I enjoy daily yoga practise now, and that is keeping me stretching regularly.

Onwards and upwards! ๐Ÿคž ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒนxxx

Thank you Blue, to be honest I got really fed up for a while, so it's good to be back on track again and seeing improvements. I keep meaning to check out Adrienne, although I've probably got enough with my Pilates for now ๐Ÿ˜Š

Oh well done!! And Pilates! Great. Iโ€™ve recently discovered the magic that is Pilates, but am struggling still with downward dogs and child poses!

Do you know about the Strength & Flex Forum on Health Unlocked? It sounds we could use your experience over there. There are also posts related to what workouts to do when on the IC.

Fab stuff, fab post and beautiful pic!

Thank you! Yes, I've had a little look at s&f, but I should investigate properly. Pilates is great, isn't it, I discovered it a few years ago when I had back trouble. It looks easy. Hah!

Yeah! I really have fallen for Pilates (and I have to admit, at the moment I prefer Pilates over Yoga, although there are still lots of diffโ€™t yoga styles to try out)

What a lovely photo. Good to read that you can walk more or less normally. My memory isn't good, when was your injury? Too long ago, I'm sure. I hope that your physio is pleased with your progress and really helpful about the way forward.

Ankle break was first week in June. And I had only just got back to running after a hip niggle. So I'm working on that hip as well as the ankle, I don't want to take any chances this time.

Sounds like a wise course of action. I am feeling a bit of a fool after Monday's initial elation. Back to physio for me for the time being. Things were feeling so good before my W1R1, Really tough my knee would be fine. Now I am remembering back to an ankle sprain 20 years ago from landing on someone's foot while playing netball. For months afterwards it would swell up if I ran, by running I mean just seeing if I could play netball again. I think I am now surprised that my physio didn't give some extra advice other than listen to your body. Still need big L plates and my knee needs lots of care. All the best to you with making your whole body fit and healthy. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒธ

Mr grumpy and I had quite a discussion LL, we couldn't decide if they were hawthorn or rose hips. There were definitely hawthorn and definitely rosehips in the hedge, but these looked a bit like both. And no leaves to help us decide. But we were quite busy picking sloes, which are now happily infusing a bottle of gin ๐Ÿ˜‹

Also didn't know about hawthorn jelly, might have to go back there again ๐Ÿ˜

There are umpteen different specimens of Hawthorne. I use the free version of an App called PictureThis plant identifier. It asks you if you want to subscribe but just click the x in the corner and ignore that and use the free version. You take a pic and it tells you what it is and itโ€™s uses

Interesting! That sounds right up my street, going to have a look. We went to Wisley the other day, they have hawthorns there that I mistook for crabapples, absolutely stunning.

limberlouGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Yes I thought some I picked were crab apples but crab apples have pips and hawthornes have stones

Good to hear you are on the mend. I had 12 weeks on the IC after a fall following an altercation with a big dog (he won!!). After physio Iโ€™m now 5 weeks back into running and living it. Like you I got into Pilates and itโ€™s great! Be patient and you will get there!
