Mixing up my runs and a new PB ๐Ÿ˜Š

So...what do do for my Thursday run? I already did a 5K on Tuesday, which was supposed to be a slow run and turned out not quite as Iโ€™d planned. Iโ€™m going on a long, slow run on Saturday, so I didnโ€™t want to push myself too hard this morning.

I remembered that some weeks ago I went on a 2K run, just to work on pace and to try and beat my 1K PB. Maybe it was time to give that another go! Decision made, I do my dynamic exercises and off I go. Not too worried about wearing a jacket, I knew I wouldnโ€™t be out for long ๐Ÿ˜€. I love the freedom of this decision making about my runs!

The last time I did this it was because I was experiencing a significant improvement in my pace, largely due to my long, slow runs. So I wanted to measure it over a shorter distance. Kilometre times for that 2K run were 6:37 and 6:43 respectively. Iโ€™ve always been one of the slower runners on here, but I like to think I can have the occasional burst of speed if I want! ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, Iโ€™ve definitely speeded up since that run. New PB for 1K of 6:10. Very pleased with that! Quite respectable. You may say that I canโ€™t maintain it and you would be right! I canโ€™t maintain it. YET ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh, and Garmin LOVES that short run! My VO2 Max shot up. Iโ€™m in the top 10% for my age and gender and my fitness age is 35, thatโ€™s over 30 years younger than my actual age. (Note to self: check whether I lied about my age when setting up Garmin ๐Ÿ˜Š.)

Splits:

6:22, 6:10

Amazing times. Youโ€™re going from strength to strength. That HM is getting closer and closer for you. Your progress is very inspiring.

Thank you! I was distracted by the Vitality 10,000, but now working towards that HM again. I need to do a few more 10 mile runs before I attempt it. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I think it's so good for us when we can see some progression. These short zippy ones are the perfect partner for the long slow ones. A bit like Morecambe and Wise! Eric is the fast run and Ernie the long slow one ๐Ÿ˜„

I know it ๐Ÿ˜€, but I still felt a bit of a fraud walking back to my house after 12 odd minutes! I imagine the Time Spent Running monitor looking at his watch in despair and shaking his head sadly ๐Ÿ˜€

I did enjoy that short run, though. Nothing like a run to really get your heart rate going, but one that is over quite soon; really blows the cobwebs away and doesnโ€™t leave you exhausted.

in reply to Jools2020

I'd suggest running fast like that and recording it on your device then slow recover jog home under a new run. I did a quite fast 5k the other week and stopped my Garmin then started it again for a very slow (12 min mile pace) jog back home. What do you think? Two runs this way and it helps you recover too.

That sounds like a really good idea. Iโ€™ll try that next time!

A nice quick 2k jools,

You could make a coffee, go out and run, then come back and drink it ๐Ÿ˜

And I wonder how low that fitness in age will go ?

It's like ' The curious case of Benjamin button' ๐Ÿ˜‚

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to Instructor57

Itโ€™s funny you should say that, I did exactly that! Coffee was perfect when I got back ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Haha, yes, Iโ€™ve seen that film.

Great short, super speedy run there!

It's lodged an idea in my head for a weekly lunchtime run in the woods behind the house that wont be too rushed ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜€

Thereโ€™s nothing to say what the minimum distance should be for a run! 2K is perfect for a lunchtime run. ๐Ÿ˜€

What a great run and a great time! I've been feeling lately like my short runs have been getting slower rather than faster but I am trusting the coaches and sticking with the plan! Will go for the 10k this weekend and then hopefully follow in your tracks for some speedy shorts! Congrats again on the PBs!

Thank you! You might surprise yourself with the speedy shorts ๐Ÿ˜€

How many points did Mr Garmin's score change by today? ๐Ÿ“ˆ

I'm currently on 41 "Good" for VO2Max. It did dip as low as 37 in August.

PS. Another cracking photo. ๐Ÿ“ท

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to nowster

It only went up 2 points to 37 and was already in the โ€˜excellentโ€™ range. But my fitness age went down by 7 years. Amazing after just one run ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

Vinchie13 in reply to nowster

Have been looking at the Vo2 max settings on my Garmin and your rate of 41 is in the Superior range....? Mine is at 28 and says my age fitness is 71 utterly confused

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to Vinchie13

The ranges depend on how old you tell Garmin you are.

I'm 52, so a VO2Max score of 41 gains me a "Good" and a fitness age of 42.

Vinchie13 profile image
Vinchie13 in reply to nowster

Oh I see, thought it was a standardised setting. New to technology.

Still must work on fitness because Iโ€™m no where near 71!!!

Thanks

There's a table here:

garmin.com/en-US/blog/fitne...

But, apparently, the watch also factors in your weight too.

Gorgeous photo! Know what you mean about the short runs. I'm due to do a 4km tonight, and with all the effort of getting my nice warm clothes off to put on my running gear, I always feel once out I'm cheating if it's a tiny run, but maybe I could use the time to speed up a bit rather than my normal slow pace which had been getting more like a snail pace lately! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to Hedgehogs123

I know exactly what you mean, but I realised that I felt good about that short run. GTFC suggested that I incorporated a slow jog as well as a different run and Iโ€™m going to try that next time (although I was done after that speedy second km!) ๐Ÿ˜€

Sounds like an uplifting run today Jools ๐Ÿ˜ I'm struggling with the 4k run myself and have decided to do 2k jog followed by interval training which seems to take me to 2k atm - can't contemplate doing it the other way round ๐Ÿ˜‚ sounds like great fun doing a speedy k or two - well done you - great stats!!! ๐Ÿ˜

Hi Julia,

Wow that is fantastic well done, on your new PB that is a lot faster, such amazing times. All your hard work is certainly paying off you must be so delighted with that, so great to be able to see your progress.

Lol! I love the update on your fitness age, take it and run!! I Must say I would not have put you in your โ€œactualโ€ age group you look a lot younger!

Well done

Aaaw, thank you, Rebecca; youโ€™ve made my day ๐Ÿ˜Š

I was so pleased with that PB, even for just 1K, itโ€™s faster than I thought I would ever be able to run!

I do probably prefer to go on my long, slow runs but itโ€™s nice to know that sometimes I can be speedy!
