Really struggling at the moment

UPDATE: ran 5k this morning. Been eating main meal at midday and light snack at 5 and slept better. Fingers crossed Monday’s appointment helps sort something else though.

I was so pleased to get my hip working properly and pain free again and I thought I would be out there running 3-4 times a week again. But I’m just not feeling it at the mo. I’m struggling with broken sleep again ( always the night before a run is planned) and my GERD is really playing up again. I haven’t had a flare up like this for ages and I’m getting really down about it. My dr prescribed Omeprazole years ago and I used to take it now and then, then I found if I didn’t take it everyday I’d have a flare up. Then I found it upset my tummy and I’d have to dash home to the loo partway through a run. Then she changed it to Lanseprole which seemed gentler ... for a while but now seems to be just the same.

I’ve read about prolonged use of these drugs and know it can cause kidney failure but I am u able to function without them. I have tried liquorice root tablets and other herbal remedies to no avail. Ended up resorting to the drugs again for some relief.

Lately I dread going to bed because I know I will be dropping off to sleep and my body will turn over into my right side naturally and then I wake with dreadful Acid Reflux and that’s it then for the rest of the night. I keep a bottle of Gaviscon by the bed and sometimes a hearty swig of that will stave off the symptoms so I can get a couple of hours sleep but last night nothing worked and I ended up trying to sleep propped up with 4 pillows and my V pillow so I wouldn’t roll onto my right. No way will I be running this morning again.

Also for some reason the upset tummy gives me a headache akin to a hangover. And I don’t really want to check paracetamol down into an already sensitive stomach. I just feel like crying now.

Sorry to unload on you all but I am just at the end of my tether. I want to run but my body is letting me down again.

I am so sorry you are struggling with your health and feeling like this. I can only suggest another trip to GP and see if they can give you anything else to help. I know from experience they give you one medication and then another to help with the side effects from the first. So frustrating 🙁

Hope you turn a corner really soon.

Thankyou. Going to try to get an apt or e-consult today

No need to apologise limberlou. Sometimes just writing (or typing) it all down can help. I'd say get back on to your doctor surgery and tell them exactly what you've told us . I hope you get the medication that can help. Good luck 🤗🤗

Thanks for your kind words and I think it’s worse because I felt so for and strong last summer before the virus and now ☹️

<sigh> Yes, I recognise that feeling of deep hurt when high expectation are so suddenly thwarted. In my case it is OH’s illness, not mine, but I suspect the thwarting is much the same. And however you try to adjust, it simply won’t work. Aargh. 🙁 Haven’t found a magic answer, unfortunately. 🤔 So can only offer fellow-feeling and a hang-in-there virtual hug. Also very annoying when our usual remedy would be to go for a run! Grrr. Take care and good luck with the forthcoming doctor appointment.

Oh dear. I’m so sorry you are struggling. It’s hard when our bodies fail us. I can’t offer any advice other than maybe talk to your doctor again and try and be gentle on yourself. Maybe a walk even if it’s only for a few minutes might help. At least it gets you outside. Take care x

Last summer I felt so fit and strong and this year, since my illness ( which I’m sure was either Covid or Covid 18 🤣) I have felt every one of my 67 years as a few more sometimes

Thanks I have appointment on Monday with my doc so 🤞

It’s harsh isn’t it. But I’m sure you will get through eventually. I’ve had some fairly horrendous episodes of illness when I thought I’d never get well again but eventually I got there. I’m sure you will too. Good luck with the doctor. X

I think all I can offer you is my support and wishes and to let you know you have so many supporters on here thinking of you and wishing you a return to health so that you can get out there again 💙

Hi Limberlou! So sorry to hear you’ve not been feeling well. 🤗

Could you alleviate some of the disappointment with some walks? I do some of my walks to guided runs on my App! It’s a new discovery for rest days and I do enjoy listening to them just as much as when I’m running. In some ways I hear the guidance differently too. It helps me keep a good pace on my walks (I do want to break out into a run sometimes, but I’m doing the right thing ...walking 🚶‍♀️when it’s a recovery day ) 🤓!

I don’t know if this helps at all, but I hope that you find the right combination to get you back out soon. 🤗🤗🤗❤️

Oh no, sorry you're having a tough time of it right now. It's horrible when our bodies let us down. If medication is disagreeing with you then the medics can surely find a way to resolve this. Best of luck. 😊

I hope so. I have a hiatus hernia which I think is half the problem and apparently they don’t repair unless as a last resort because sometimes the repairs make it worse ☹️

booksie profile image
booksie in reply to limberlou

Hi Limberlou

I haven't read through all the replies but I've also got a hiatus hernia and have exactly the same symptoms as you as well as the most annoying cough at night that keeps me awake or wakes me up! Was on same medicines as you but gave them all up as I was concerned about side effects. I find Gaviscon chewable tablets help a bit ( the double action ones ) . Also I don't eat after 7pm - If I do I might as well stay up till dawn.! Sorry about you hip problem. Walking might be a better option for now perhaps?

Sorry to hear you are struggling. There are other medications worth trying if your GP will prescribe them, something like Esomeprazole. It is the same class of drug as the Omeprazole and Lansoprazole but it may suit you better. It may be worth asking for a repeat gastroscopy investigation, if you haven't had one recently to review the hiatus hernia. Are you under a gastroenterologist?

I hope your appointment is successful on Monday and you get some relief.

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to EThomas

I haven’t seen a gastroenterologist for a few years now so maybe worth pushing for another review ??

EThomas profile image
EThomasGraduate10 in reply to limberlou

I think it would be worth a review

Fleetnot profile image
FleetnotGraduate10 in reply to limberlou

I agree that you need a gastro review. Make it very clear to GP about impact on your quality of life, don't be noble. Worth being on a waiting list ... situation depends on area you live in. Paracetamol won't upset your stomach but GP or pharmacist can advise on appropriate pain relief. Try raising head of your bed to alleviate night time symptoms or buy a specific pillow. Read advice on GORD and hiatus hernia on NHS site. Not getting sleep pacts on our ability to cope generally. Very best wishes.

Thanks. I usually just figure I have to expect some aches and pains at my age and I cope with them. Got my asthma meds more or less right now, my hip feels nearly back to normal ( unless I have a couple of hours car journey and then I’m stiff until I get moving again) and then this lot flares up again. What a pain!!

So sorry to hear this. It’s frustrating when our bodies won’t play ball when our minds are focused.

Why not contact your GP and ask for a referral to Gastroenterology? They might recommend a gastroscopy.

If, for example, your GERD is much worse because of a hiatus hernia, a relatively simple keyhole procedure could fix that.

In the meantime, have you tried not eating or drinking for several hours before bed?

Also, can you tilt the head of your mattress for some gravity-assist?

Hoping you get some relief soon.

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to Nutmog

I had a gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedure a couple of years back and they said my colon etc was clear and gastro showed hiatus hernia

That was when I was given repeat scrip for omeprazole instead Of as and when as I had been using them

I don’t eat after 6 at the latest and not a big meal

But I have though of propping bed up higher at Head end

Thanks for suggestions

So sorry to hear.maybe just do some walks instead until you feel stronger and better to tackle the runs . Sometimes we are out own worse enemy's, when maybe we set our goals to high. Don't put so much pressure on yourself, it sounds like you have enough to deal with. Nice long walks may help, still getting out, still getting fresh air and still achieving something. Be kind to yourself .🏃‍♀️

Sorry to see this, Lou 😥

I can empathise, I have been hitting the Gaviscon at bedtime for a while now. Have you ever read about the "solution" that involves raising the whole top end of the bed so that you sleep on an incline? Pretty drastic, and I have never felt bad enough to try it 😂

Hope the GP can help, but in the meantime here is a site with a few tips to help stop you turning in your sleep:

Sorry to hear your desperation, when I get down I don’t run, I will find anything including food to feed my spiral... but I do walk,, so perhaps if you can’t run, then maybe Afew walks. Just keep moving 😉

Oh limberlou, you poor thing. You sound like you're at the end of your tether. I hope your GP can help.

Your gut has a profound effect on your well being and will make you feel generally unwell if it is unbalanced (speaking from experience here).

It sounds like you need a referral to a gastroenterologist to get back to a steady state.

In the meantime some fresh air and a plan for the future might help. I do hope you can get this sorted.

Oh bless you 💕

I’m struggling with similar at moment - my Dr prescribed Omeprazole (reading kidney failure in your post terrifies me)... didn’t know 😳

my Dr did a raft of blood tests and is monitoring..

Have you had your bloods checked?

After that if symptoms persist it’s scan..

I hope you get sorted lovely .. x

we are missing our running aren’t we .. and like you .. just want to feel better 💕

Yeah I’ve had full blood tests ( sister has thyroid issues and parents had diabetes) and I’m great at all the readings. So that’s one thing.

Oh my you have a lot to deal with . A good night's sleep is very important and I can't imagine having constant difficulties .

I have no suggestions I'm afraid but I hope you get some help from your GP.

Regards your age - I was 60 in April and have now started looking at stories of older people doing great things . An 85 year old lady did the virtual London marathon last week, and a 90 year old did a sky dive for her birthday xxx

Sorry to hear all that it must be hard for you - my thoughts though are (and acknowledging it is always simple when it is someone elses problem):

1) Can you prop yourself with a pillow and sleep like that for a few nights - difficult perhaps but may help?

2) Parking that one - running - it seems strange that you don't sleep the night before - maybe you are making a meal of it - nobody says you have to run for 15 minutes or an hour or 2 hours or whatever - the idea is to enjoy it and do what you fancy/feel like, and to me at least that includes pbs etc - if I go for a run and fancy doing a long one or a fast one I will - if I dont I wont simple as that - I ran my first 1/2 marathon distance 3 weeks ago and then 4 days after got a cold and a knee pain out of no-where meant doing just 1 slow run since which was way shorter and I walked a load to -- when I thought I was at a breakthrough point. Does it matter......... no.....I'll have some time out and get running how/when I can - it will come and the same will be for you. Dont set a day time if possible - try and keep it up but just relax and do it when you feel like it.

Off the soap box now! : )

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to Hated2Run

I try propping up but get neck ache then when I slide down 🙄

I think the trouble with the sleep before running is I like to run early and i then am concerned I won’t get off to sleep in time to get up and run, then I dint sleep 🤣

I’ve always been a light sleeper anyway- can hear a mouse fart 4 fields away.

Oh LL, poor you...no wonder you're not feeling it!

I can really empathize with you, I have IBS with acute dyspepsia. Thank the lord I'm on amitriptyline at the mo and have had a great year with minimal symptoms...funny enough I've always been on and off it, and the same with omaprazole but started with lots of migraines which seem to be linked and within a month or so of taking 10mg amitriptyline daily things have been great.

My doc said headaches/migraines can be linked to stomach issues.

There is nothing worse that indigestion/nausea at night...then you're exhausted all day as you've had a bad night.

I've no idea if probiotics are useful for your condition but I use kefir (homemade) daily as a healthy gut biome is supposed to help 🤷‍♀️

I really hope things settle for you soon...maybe a gentle walk rather than a run if you're shattered. The fresh air is good for your mental health too which always takes a bashing when you're suffering.

Feel better soon 💕

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to Run46

Yeah I do walk daily and it does help, but I miss my runs. Yeah I know the migraines are linked to gut issues. I’ve been taking a pre-biotics to settle tums after lots of antibiotics ( 3 lots throughout my nasty 3 month virus end of ‘19/beg of ‘20) . I’m not keen on Kefir/Kombucha/fermented stuff. I keep trying but really don’t like it.

Run46 profile image

I feel for you, it seems to take forever for things to settle once a flare up begins...best of luck for some decent sleep and enough of a recovery to give you the energy to run soon 🤞

Like everyone else, I really feel for you., but can't think of any helpful advice except to hang on in there and trust that eventually they will find the right medication for you. You and I will both have had time to learn (I'm a couple of years older than you) that things usually come right in the end, even though getting there can be frustrating. I hope your Monday appointment comes up with something that helps x
