Hugs needed please - back on the IC with a vengeance

So, full of optimism, I went out on Saturday for a run-walk session after the rain. Slipped on some loose gravel and felt a wrench around my ankle and found myself on the ground. Called Mr grumpy to collect me and spent the weekend on the sofa. Went for an x-ray today because I still couldn't stand on it, and yes, I have a broken ankle ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Got a lovely black boot and the prospect of wearing it for 6-8 weeks. Gah!!!!!

Oh! Oh! I am so sorry! That must have been really painful. Ohhh! Here are some flowers for you. ๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒท๐Ÿ’ They don't need watering so you won't need to give that job to Mr Grumpy. I do hope that you find all sorts of things that you can do over the next 6 weeks.

Thanks I love flowers! ๐Ÿ˜Š Just slightly concerned for the welfare of my tomato plants for the rest of the summer ๐Ÿค”

over61andstilltrying profile image
over61andstilltryingGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Some of my plants even with my attention seem to struggle to thrive. What happened to my runner beans this year? I have no idea. Can you use crutches, not necessarily for gardening duties, but just to get about? I loved my crutches when I had a fractured pelvis. Without them I could not walk one step. With them I was away! Stairs as well!

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to over61andstilltrying

I've been issued with crutches because I mustn't put any weight on the foot. Not allowed to tackle stairs until I've had some practice with crutches, and we've got lots of steps and a sloping garden. so maybe in a couple of weeks I'll be able to venture down there. I was ridiculously pleased when I got them, and my friend has also offered the loan of a zimmer frame (!) this may be really useful for gardening once i can get down there. My runners are doing ok if a bit behind, but my peas are very shy. Probably been eaten by slugs now...

Oh no! All my sympathy. I had four and a half months off last year with a foot stress fracture (one month wasted before the actual diagnosis, so you're already ahead of the game). It wasn't fun. Read my posts and you'll see there were dark moments! But. It wasn't all bad.

Looking back now here's some positive thoughts:

It really was just a small blip

My first comeback run was such an emotional highpoint, it's right up there with many positive milestones in my life

Finding Caroline Jordan youtube videos was a life saver

Discovering cycling for fitness (even with my orthopaedic boot) was a life changer - I loved it and still do, it saved my sanity and brought me back stronger than ever

C25K second time around was a lot easier

Many PBs have followed that lay off

I still love running

Stick around if you can, post your progress regularly and let the mass of support and encouragement here help you through this. Theres a lot of light at the end of the tunnel. Hugs, positive thoughts and speedy healing ๐Ÿ˜˜

Not sure BC, the fracture clinic just called me, I have to be non weight bearing ๐Ÿ˜ฌ so this could take a while. And of course it's the same bleeping side as the dodgy hip. My left glutes however are having a terrific workout!

Beachcomber66 profile image

None weight bearing, so crutches? You know that all you can do is follow the advice, but what awful luck!

Just finished my new exercises; took me an hour and a half!! Hopefully that will speed up when I get the hang of them. I canโ€™t moan though, glad to be on the mend.

Keep us updated grumps...feel free to moan incessantly!! ๐Ÿค—

Oh no!! I fractured mine a couple of years ago just as Iโ€™d reached 10k runs!! I was gutted. Bit of advice though. Look on Amazon for a leveller for your other shoe. When I did mine they gave me a boot and wrist crutches and Iโ€™d also sprained my wrist so THAT was painful anyway. But I found that heaving my self about on lopsided shoes made my other hip ache a lot. I searched in Google and found out about these things, they look a bit like a strap on sandal and you can wear them over your ordinary shoe on your good foot and they level you up. Made all the difference to me

Some are quite expensive but mine was about ยฃ9

Actually just found this one

๐Ÿ˜‚ Ain't that the truth! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Mr grumpy is still recovering from his first supermarket shop in lockdown (I've been doing it until now, he's working from home). Apparently people (men on their mobiles) were ignoring social distancing in there, so he was very much Mr grumpy by the time he got home ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Finally got my first online Sainsbury's slot for the weekend though, so he's been spared a return trip for now. Bless.๐Ÿ˜Š

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Yay!! Thatโ€™s good news I have always shopped with Sainsburyโ€™s online but used to like to pop in for a shop if I had time but I have been so glad of it since lockdown. Apart from a Farmbox of fruit and veg at the beginning ( which I would have continued with but they inexplicably put the price up from ยฃ11 to ยฃ17 the second week of lockdown ...hmm) I have done all my shopping through Sainsburyโ€™s. Then after the first month, when I accidentally ordered 1 banana instead of 1kg, I also pop in and grab a bunch of bananas in my little Coop, just down the road from me, on my way back from a run or a walk. They have been v good with whole SD thing since it started...limiting numbers of people in the shop when busy. I havenโ€™t ventured into a big supermarket since end of Feb.

My son, who was made redundant end of Feb, has got a part time position as an online shop picker at our local Tesco and he said lots of customer have no idea of Soc Distancing, leaning over him to get things, rather than just saying excuse me please.
