Managed my first 10k today, what time should I be doing it in?

I managed to complete my first 10k today and while it felt good to complete it, I made the mistake of telling a friend my time, 71 minutes 😬 to complete it just to be told it was really slow. Is there a reasonable time I should be aiming for?

Congratulations on completing your first 10k. I’m not an expert, but I think 71 minutes sounds like a really good time! Well done!

Thank you 😊

There is no 'reasonable time' you should be doing it in. Everyone is different and everyone runs at their own pace.

Be proud of yourself!! 10k is very far!! :-)

71 minutes is right on track for someone who graduated C25K running 4K in 30 mins. Go you!

How can I put this, with the greatest respect to the person concerned; if your friend was sitting down when he/she pronounced on your 10k, their voice would have been muffled... if you get my drift! 😊

71 minutes is a stupendous first 10k ... 6 minutes faster than my first! The point is that you were quite rightly focussed on getting the distance, not on speed. As you extend distance greater speed follows on behind as confidence and fitness increase. Scrub really slow!!!. replace with brilliant; really really well done πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ₯‚πŸ‘πŸΎ

Great post. I agree. Everyone, especially non runners, is always obsessed with your time that’s why I hardly told a soul I was running birmingham half marathon last October

HeatherM 11 minutes outside an hour that's pretty good going. You should be super proud

That person who told you that 71 minutes for a 10K was slow was not very nice to you, it is NOT slow, ignore him, congratulations on running your first 10K in sub 75 minutes πŸŽ“

And how fast does this β€˜friend’ run 10 k in? , what is β€˜slow’ exactly? that is a super time, and is around my average for a 10k, I will never be much faster, who cares?

I go out, I run, sometimes to reach a distance, sometimes to be running for a set time, I run at my pace, no one else’s, I do events, my medal is the same as the people who crossed the line first and last........I achieved the goal, the time is only important to me.

Be proud

You may or may not get faster, it really doesn't matter... dunno whether your friend will be able to get less crass but really needs to.

(Way faster than my 10Ks)

I suspect your friend may have been talking through the wrong orifice. My first 10k was 79 mins; my current PB is 64 mins. Typically I run them around the 70 min mark so I'd say your time is pretty much spot on.

Just wanted to echo the many comments above - your time is just fine πŸ‘πŸ™‚ and is likely to improve significantly as your strength over the distance increases. The comment from your 'friend'πŸ€” was less than supportive - you cracked the Magic 10 and that is cause for celebration!πŸŽ‰ Well done!πŸ™‚

I have done 10k, only once, I may never do it again!. If I do decide to have another go, I don't care about the time.

Well done you. Tell your Kipchoge pal to zip it!!!

Quicker than mine, having got back into running in the summer, I usually do it in about 70-75 minutes πŸ˜„ so yes, well done!

I'd just be glad I ran 10k - well done!

The main person you are competing

against is yourself! Running 10k at all is a great fitness achievement whatever your time! And people like me who struggle to do 5k in less than 40 mins and havent got to 10k yet are a larger proportion of the bridge to 10k population than you may think. Congratulations on your success!

Hey, ignore β€˜friends’. You did it, be proud, the time doesn’t matter. If you want it to and you do more 10k then it will probably come down. Just enjoy the moment and well done.

My first was 1hr 22 mins, my fastest so far is 1 hr 17 mins. I'm just pleased I've managed to knock 5 mins off my time! I'd love to be faster but it isn't going to happen overnight. A year ago I couldn't run to the end of the street but now I can run 10k. That's what matters. Ignore your so called friend!

Huge well done, that is a fantastic achievement. pffffff your friend should know better. There is no god of speed that will strike you down! We all run at different speeds, and that is all good. For me, I think that sounds like a good time, and i often run 10k's in that time. Please please dont get hung up on speed, I have been around here for a while, and its the one thing that seems to stop people from running, as they never feel that they are good enough. We are all good enough :)

Sounds great to me!! My first 10k was 1hr 22mins June 2018 and I’ve never managed to beat that but I don’t care. I run for me not anyone else. I’ve since run a HM and that took me 3hrs 18mins and again I don’t care!! I did it at the age of 66 - having hated running all my life I now love it.

Run for yourself and ignore your β€œfriend”.

By the way how fast does he/she run 10k???

Honestly! Why would someone say that? Even if they are thinking that thought... don’t say it! It’s your first 10k; an achievement to feel proud of and on which your friends should wholeheartedly congratulate you.
