Con Smith Inaugural parkrun

My parkrun this morning. Travelled with some fellow parkrun buddies from my local parkrun. We went to a brand new inaugural parkrun. Such fun. It’s OK in Ireland to go to inaugural parkruns as it boosts numbers and shows support without it getting out of control for the new volunteers. There were about 250 participants. Went really well. I got a C for my alphabet challenge, finished in 27:16 giving me a 16 for parkrun bingo and I got to spend a few hours and a breakfast with some parkrun friends. I hope the link works OK.

Yay fantastic Damien! How exciting being there at the beginning of a PR’s life. 😀 I’ve done it too, it was great (and mine happened to be a C as well!) I need a D - we have friends in Dublin - so if we come over this year it has to be done! 😀

There are a few parkruns in Dublin which start with a D. Please let me know if you are coming over, I’d love to meet up again. Oisin and I are just 30-40 minutes outside Dublin.

And you got a C for your seven seas and an r challenge too! I take it that c’s are hard to collect that’s why they have the challenge.

I think it’s hard to get 7 of the C’s. it’s doable but I think I’ll leave the pirate challenge until after the alphabet challenge.

Alphabet challenge, parkrun bingo and compass challenge will be enough. I’ll probably collect a few C’s along the way. It’s madness, but a healthy obsession. 😀

How brilliant damienair, what more could you ask for - parkrun, buddies and breakfast. We think we are getting a new one too, and there are some (secret) practices going on. I can imagine it will be very busy if and when they announce its first run. Our worry is the loss of volunteers to the new one, as we struggle each week already.

Hopefully runners will step up to volunteer. I think if everyone just volunteered once every 10 runs there would be no issue. My local parkrun asks everyone to volunteer once in every 10, some do more, some do less, but the roster is usually full every week. I’ll be volunteering next week as a timer. I like to volunteer 1 in 10, I usually do pacer too, I get a credit for volunteering and running but I don’t count pacer as one of my 1 in 10 volunteering days. I’ve volunteered 16 times out of 64 so far and 4 of the 16 were as pacer.

We’re still running fairly close together. I’m 66/18.

I would like to get the purple shirt before the end of this year so that may have to include token sorting after a run . We don’t have pacers.

I’m hoping to get the purple 25 and black 100 T-Shirts before the end of 2020. I’m aiming for 40 parkruns this year. 3 done. We are indeed still very close together.

You could also volunteer for event set up and take down each week for a few weeks. That would also allow you to get a run and a volunteer credit.

They don’t do that here as all the other volunteers help set up before their tasks. The only other one is first time’s briefing.

Cool video! Lovely to be there for the inauguration of a new Parkrun, how did it compare to your local one?

It was a little weird. Some of it was in a small town park, some of it in a Car park and some along a wide roadway path. Not the most scenic of parkruns. But was attended by lovely people from the locality and visiting parkrun tourists. As with all parkruns there was a great atmosphere and great volunteers.

On the video, it looked like there was a lot of looping back and forth! Nice to have options on a Saturday morning anyway, even if it's not as pretty as your local one.

Great trip. Nice to hear about new park runs starting up and being so well supported. Happy running

You've got your C now Damien so you won't be rushing to Coole Park - unless you count it as a P. I seem to be a regular roster filler but i enjoy it very much and I do my long run on Sundays so I'm not missing a run day. I still have a bit to go to get my volunteer t-shirt.

Excellent time by the way

Thank you. I am sure I’ll get to Coole some day. My brother lives in Galway, and we have a family weekend booked in Galway in February so I’m hoping to get 2-3 of the surrounding parkrun course done this year. I also need another 6 x C’s for the pirate challenge. 😀
