Think my mojo is missing...

Hello everyone- needing someone to give me a talking to! Graduated from C25K over a year ago. Did a 5K for MacMillan in May, and since then have been trying to extend my running time - have done 60 minutes (not great distance, I’m very very slow still). However, I had a bit of an accident a month ago while running down a street beside a high stone wall. Got distracted by someone behind me and tripped over my feet while looking back. Hit my head on the wall, bounced back, then on the pavement - skinned knees and deep cut on my elbow. Two black eyes and broken specs. No broken bones though! I still have bursitis on the elbow 🙁. I’ve been out twice since, but there always seems a reason (excuse) not to go... So, any encouragement (nagging) accepted!

Oh my goodness Betty that sounds horrific! I’m not at all surprised you’ve been reluctant to go out again. 😩

Speaking as someone who’s just been giving a good talking to by my VRBs (for a different reason), I feel qualified to say give yourself as much time as you need. Don’t go out with any speed/distance in mind, but make running fun again and go for a gentle trot - quit while you’re ahead. There’s plenty of time to rebuild your distance or get faster. 😀

Look after yourself. Your body took quite a blow that day, as well as your confidence. ❤️

Thank you so much! I love your suggestion - I think I was fixated on getting on with my plan! 💕

Yep, fixation was my downfall too. Let’s run for fun together! 🏃‍♀️👏🏃‍♀️

Hi Bettyb719, i think you might be still a bit scared after your incident against the wall... How do you feel about just getting your running gear on and going for a walk? The hidden plan is that a walk is not a run, but once out there if you feel like it, maybe once you reach a nice path, you can decide to take a little run, but if you don't feel like it , you just keep walking?

I think you’re right, and that’s a great idea! Thank you 💖

Ouch! I bet that hurt. It’ll take time for your body to get over the shock and settle down to a run so be patient, it’ll happen.

The autumn colours are glorious atm so why not take yourself off somewhere where there are trees and go for a walk (wear your running shoes) and just do a little walk/run. No time pressure, run like you did as a child just stopping when you feel like it and then starting again. “Oh, I’ll just run to that gorgeous big tree”. Play. Sometimes we forget to do that as adults but go for it.

Thank you! You are so right, and that’s what I’m going to do! Xx

I think I remember you posting about that. Poor you, it must have been awful. I like 27's idea of going for a walk in gear. How about also going somewhere beautiful if you can, a park or beside a river and enjoy the scenery whether it's a walk or a walk with a little jog in the middle?

Hope your feeling better apart from your elbow still being sore. I agree with above posts just go out no pressure no plan and see if you can just enjoy running again. Good luck 😊😊

Ooh ouch! I’m not surprised you’re a bit reluctant to go out at the moment Bettyb - that was a horrible fall. I think the advice already given is wise - take it slow and perhaps go out for a walk and run bits of it in open places where you feel safe. Don’t worry about speed - I’m really slow as well but am learning to embrace it and let everyone else go off like rockets while I just plod along on my own pace! Good luck and don’t forget to let us know how you get on!

Thank you! I think open spaces will be better - there’s a lovely park I go to sometimes. Will let you know how it goes! 💖

Betty so sorry to hear about your accident! I can imagine that would make my mojo go into hibernation too. But, I do think it is hibernation and I have first hand experience of it being woken back up again. It can take time, so be gentle with yourself.

Kit on and a walk through your route for a couple of days might help. You might even decide that you want to run 😉 and if not, it really doesn’t matter. You can trust and listen to your own inner knowing!

I reckon being out there is definitely the most amazing thing we do for ourselves and you’re so worth it. You’ve done so brilliantly already and there’s more. We’re right here to cheer you on! Big hugs! 🤗❤️

My goodness & ouch - that was “a wallop & some”. No wonder you have felt put off for a while.

Lots of wonderful ideas have been suggested already - I was just going to say make a list of your favourite running circumstances & do those as much as possible. It might be obvious things like favourite routes & things to listen to, but maybe there are little details too that add to your enjoyment - e.g. I like running with the sun in my eyes (bizarre I know 😂) because it makes me feel bathed in warmth & extra relaxed!

Good luck, we’re waiting to cheer you on! 😄

OUCH!!!!

that would def make your mojo hide away, or would mine

great advice as ever already, nothing to add apart from hope you are feeling OK now, take care of yourself and just try and enjoy it! go for a short run, no pressure, no time or distance.

Do you have a local parkrun?

Good luck

Thank you! Yes I have been to the local parkrun but only 3 times. I often run the route though. Maybe doing that would be an excellent idea! 😍

All wonderful suggestions. I do hope you can get back outside and just be happy to be out and see where it goes. I feel for you, anyone at all would be thinking twice about heading out again...but you know deep down you want to. Just go steady and careful. No rush. 💕

So, I went to my local parkrun Park (half an hour drive away) this morning, and just ran, listening to a book, and several people said hello and well done! 😄. Ran for about 50 minutes, and it didn’t matter that I accidentally paused my Fitbit for about 10... One of my most enjoyable runs, and I thought of all the encouragement from you lovely people - thank you - I’m back 🏃‍♀️
