September Quest: final week

Hi,

I hope you all had a great week and are enjoying your running right now.

I covered over 23 miles on my runs last week, which was great. I also got missed by a falling horse chestnut or 10 just a little bit too close for comfort, one landing right next to where my foot was landing. I can only imagine that they’re gonna hurt, does anyone run in a hard hat?

It’s time to close out September and look towards October... have fun this week and we shall see you all again soon for the October quest.

What is the Quest?

The aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

The Quest takes one calendar month. You can join at any point during that time.

We ask that you are a C25K Graduate before joining the Quest. The reason for this is that pre-graduation your week is very much structured according to the C25K programme, and we wouldn't want the Quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:

★ To run three times a week

★ To slowly increase distance

★ To train for a specific race

★ To add Stretch and Strength exercises to your weekly routine

The Quest is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you!

Happy running and/or cross-training!!!

Oldfloss, IannodaTruffe, Roseabi, and UnfitNoMore

23rd September 2019

PS: sorry this is so late, I had technical issues earlier.

So glad that chestnut missed you, a close encounter with a falling horse chestnut.

I had a good week last week, I got a PB at parkrun of 30.55, just one thing, I know exactly where the place is that times you at the end, however, at the start your time begins at the 3,2.1 and GO is the start of the run, at a parkrun there is not chip time, so the go is the start, I think that is correct.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to AlMorr

Yeah... no chip timing so it’s Go to line cross.. which probably means you were a good few seconds faster than that time even. Many congratulations on the PB

Hello everyone, all going to plan for September for me so far. I have got up to the 10 miles needed for the Great South Run so even if I can’t run it all on the day I will be happy. I’m loving parkrun on Saturdays. And now I’ve got lots of exercises to do to strengthen my glutes and support my ITB in addition to 2 Pilates classes a week.

Good job I don’t have to fit work in as well!

Happy running, running beings 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🐩

Yeah... you’re much too busy for a job! Well done getting up to that big 10. Sorry to have missed you guys this Saturday just gone, but there shall be other opportunities.

No problem UNM - I’m sure we will get to meet somewhere.

My quest is to just keep plugging away but try and be more structured about the running - like making sure I get an interval run in every week or some fartleks at least.

The week before last I got 4 runs in, one a short 20 mins interval, this week I got just one run in, I am finding the dark mornings way harder than I thought.

It should get easier as the school routine finds its groove

It’s a tricky time of year to keep packing it all in. Sounds like you’re doing well, and I like your plans for the future. Good luck with that scheduling.

Thanks - now I just need an alarm that is harder to snooze :D

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to backintime

My phone is my alarm, and I have to get out of bed to snooze it, by which time it’s pointless to do so.

I can reach mine from my bed - either I need a longer charging cable or I need to move my bed :D

Ah yes... I always charge mine over breakfast.

Hi fellow Questers,

I'm pleased with my activities last week. Three long walks (around 30k) a lovely evening run and a Pilates session. We went to stay in Oxford for the weekend and really enjoyed a walking tour seeing and learning about all the sights.

So, this is the final week before my 10k race event in Windsor on Saturday! I have run 5k today and will hopefully fit in another gentle run before the day.

We didn't go back for another test run of the 10k course, which I feel is a good thing...

Eeek...A race run report will follow!

Happy running everyone 😊xxx

Great week... strangely I’ve never been to Oxford. Sounds like you’re well and truly ready for the Windsor event... enjoy the relaxation and that little run. Can’t wait to hear about that race.

It was our first time Neil, we tried to visit there years ago, but gave up as we couldn't find a parking spot.

I would recommend an overnight or two stay!😊

Thank you for your good wishes😊xx

in reply to Bluebirdrunner

I can't wait for that 10km race report. You will enjoy it I am certain because you know you can do it. Oxford sounds really nice. I'd keep your gentle run nice and short so that you are well rested before the event. Good luck xx

Thank you Paula, great advice, and what I needed to hear. 😘xx

Hope you are ok again after your knee niggle...

Reasonably pleased with last week & the start of this. Trotting along regularly & the new running watch (Did I mention I’ve got a new watch?) encouraged me actually to do an interval run instead of just thinking vaguely that it would be a good thing 😄 Yesterday’s “long” run was aborted when I was so drowned during the warmup that I turned for home. But today I did a good 6k in fitful sunshine. So I feel launched on my buildup to 10k. The plan is to add 0.5k a week to build up slowly. Ever the Tortoise, me. 🐢 Next Quest will defo have to be more strength stuff but it’s not October yet so I’m still faffing about, figuring that out 🤔 while I try things a bit haphazardly.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Granspeed

Slow and steady progression is much better than too much too soon... and you’re well on your way to that 10k now. Can’t blame you for aborting a run when drenched in the warmup... it can rain as much as it likes once I’m running but not in the warm up! Have a great week.

in reply to Granspeed

Oh congrats on the watch. I'm a big fan of going up by 0.5km a week and even staying at that for a week or so. There's no rush.

Hi UNM

As I think you know, I cracked the HM distance with this week’s “long slow”, so that was monthly target #1 ✅

UpTheStanley profile image
UpTheStanleyGraduate10 in reply to UpTheStanley

Oh booger that shouldn’t have gone then - meant to say that leaves me with 15k at race pace to do this week, hopefully in under 85 minutes.

Onwards and upwards!!

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to UpTheStanley

Many congratulations on the HM distance... while I’ve been on HU all week, very little of that time has been spent on the forums, something I need to change this week.

15k race pace sounds so wrong where I am... I’m having to get used to seeing these things and “6 mile recovery” though. You’re well ahead of the GSR game I think.

Thanks - we’ll find out 4 weeks yesterday! 🙏

Well I did up my distance to 10.5km. I was trying not to slouch or slump on an after work run in the forest. It was a beautiful evening as i crunched along on fallen nuts with leaves dropping on my head. I've had an achey knee and it felt very stiff afterwards. I accidentally had a 2 hour walk with a friend yesterday and I now need to rest a while on the IC. I am doing my knee and ITB exercises and probably won't run until next weekend. It may take me some time to up my distance and I just HAVE to do my core strength exercises. C'est la vie :)

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to

Sounds like an intelligent plan going forwards to me... sometimes the best run is no run of course. Hopefully the knee will settle and strengthen nicely and swiftly.

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply to

Oh, pesky joints. 😧 Sorry it’s not got over itself. Hope the exercises work well & you’re not on the IC for long.

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to

Rest up Paula, and take your running easy. There is no rush to push yourself harder and further than your body wants to go.

Giving yourself time to get stronger is very sensible, and of course you will run 10 miles and get there safely when the time is right.

Take care. xx

I’m pleased with my past two weeks consolidation runs. Have tried new routes, even risked being spotted by neighbours 😂 and have stuck to 3 times a week. Now for my 2nd park run (and 2nd 5k) on Saturday 🙂. September Quest ✅

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Slothgoesrunning

Well done with the running and especially risking been seen! That’s a big step that I only accidentally took, but once it was done I just started running anywhere. Enjoy that parkrun, the first one is always a little bit of a nervous time, you can relax into them now.

Unfortunately I’ve had to abandon my quest this month as I’ve fractured my shoulder, looks like I might be out of action for some time ☹️

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Getfitok

Ouch. Hopefully it will heal well, but gonna be a couple of months out. Finding things to maintain fitness will help the comeback but it’s surprising how many things affect the shoulders and upper back.

23 miles 😳...Good Lord, that's impressive, and I thought the 17K from Week 4 of Juju's magic plan was a lot 😁

During October I will be plugging away so that hopefully by the end of the month I'll have run that elusive 10K 👍

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Run46

Well... it’s just a matter of progression week on week... getting to 5k and 10k is harder and takes longer than adding on afterwards. Well done on that week 4, and have fun getting to that 10k

I have been plugging away at the magic 10 and have just got to 8k. I went through it running to time and now I'm repeating it running the distance. We've been away a bit and have visitors this week so I'm quite pleased that I've managed to fit the running in but the strength work and my yoga and Pilates classes have gone by the board. So my quest is to do a couple of yoga sessions a week by myself and to keep to the three runs. Another 8k to run tomorrow! Still super slow snail here but getting further!

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Gwenllian1

Great job... and well done getting to that 8 again. Super slow remains super good when going longer, pace really doesn’t matter until you want it too.

Further to my last, target #2 achieved as detailed in a separate post - GSR training schedule complete :-)

Onwards and upwards!!
