First 10K in 3 months

I’ve entered into a 13K mountain trail race in November. Yikes! I had alcohol consumed when I agreed to do it with my Sister. But we are not going to back out. And so the training started in earnest this evening. 10K done, I surprised myself by doing it in a nice time holding a steady pace. I’ve 2 months to prepare. Wish me luck.🍀

You’ll smash it Damien! How exciting - mountain trails don’t sound very flat to me! You’ll find the hills at Eastville Park a doddle in October! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️💪

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to cheekychipmunks

Oh my God I know😂. The race starts with an 800 ft climb straight away, followed by a 800ft decent and another 2 large climbs. It won’t be a PB course, no way.

I’m really looking forward to my parkrun in Eastville.

Yikes, that looks challenging! You’ve got a great 10k time though so I’m sure you’ll smash it. Eastville parkrun will indeed be good practice!

Im really looking forward to visiting Bristol as a tourist and doing my first UK parkrun at Eastville. Just over 3 weeks to go.

Just completed the 10k Disney Paris run also in a personal bed of 59:03

Chuffed to bits.

Signed up for half marathon next yr 🙈

What is a good 10k time ? I’m currently going at 62 mins.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to mickj

I was just working on my 5K time by doing interval training. It was great for developing a faster 5K pace and a comfortable 10K pace. 62 minutes is great. My first 10K took me 1 hour and 15 minutes

It’ll be such fun! Don’t worry the hills there are fine. There’s one short steep one, and three others, not so steep, but longer. You’ll eat them for breakfast! 😅

damienair profile image

And then we’ll go for Breakfast 😀

That's great, what run is that?

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Couchpotato2

It’s a run for Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue Service called Run the Line. There is a 26K route and a 13K route. I’m doing the 13K option. You get a T Shirt and instead of a medal finishers receive a metal camping Mug. Medals are for Mugs.😀

Couchpotato2 profile image
Couchpotato2 in reply to damienair

Haha I’m a mug then :-) That sounds great and wise to start with the 13k, might be tought enough!

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Couchpotato2

It will be very tough. Some very steep climbs. Hope the weather plays ball, driving wind and rain in November could be a miserable experience.

I'm a mug too!! 😂 Mr Deals says I'm like mutley (remember darsidly and mutley... Mutley always wanted medals! 😂)

😂😂 it is race t shirts for me. My wife just throws her eyes to heaven when a new one arrives. I love medals too, a mug will be different.

Congratulations to you Damien on that sub 60 minutes 10K, good training for your 13K mountain trail in November, I certainly do wish you luck.

The very Sunday that the clocks go back there is a HM 21 Kilometre trail run event not too far from where I live, the runners have to run at the start up a 200 meter hill, keep running to the bottom of that hill, then run through quite a hilly area, down again, up again to 200 metres, down, another hill and so on, very different from a parkrun, in fact compared to that 21 km HM trail run or your fourth coming 13K run, a parkrun is what it says it is, a run in the park.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to AlMorr

I’m looking forward to it and dreading it in equal measure. It will be great training for parkrun. 800ft climb straight after the start line.🥵

Good luck, 🍀😊🏃

Great time Damien, you've got it covered looks like. In 2 months you'll be more than ready

damienair profile image

Thanks. I’m aiming to be running 15-16K by then but the climbs will be hard to train for.

Ha ha...same here in midi pyrenees. I keep being approached to be fourth team member for vertical marathon in October...im remaining firm with my "no" after watching last years youtube video.. best of luck with yours Damien

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Franglaise

Thank you. I’m sure it won’t be as severe as the Pyrenees but I’ll stay off YouTube just in case I frighten myself off it. At least the last 2-3k is down hill.

Good luck! 🤞 That amazing 10k time bodes well, you've definitely got this. Thanks for the gratuitous Garmin shot btw 😁 Forerunner? I've decided to treat myself if I can find a good Black Friday deal in November 🤗

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to CaffeineBomb

Thank you. Yes it’s a Garmin Forerunner 35. I bought it for £80 in an Amazon prime sale 2 months ago. You should get it at a similar price on a Black Friday Sale.

I had a second hand Forerunner 15 for 2 years. The 35 is a nice upgrade.

Good to get an idea of potential price, thanks for that 👍Now I just need to be patient and wait for the sale... sigh...

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Buddy34

Thank you. I surprised myself. I was able to hold a pretty steady pace all the way around. The 5K interval training is translating well. I was also doing a few 7K runs every now and then.

Buddy34 profile image
Buddy34Graduate10 in reply to damienair

Maybe I will try some 5k interval training to see of it can help me run longer

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Buddy34

It really helps with pacing. You just get used to running faster. My legs thankfully are not sore today. Next run will be parkrun on Saturday.

Great time there! You could do it tomorrow if you needed to. But good luck anyway 🙂 🍀

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Irishprincess

I think I’ll need to put a few weeks of long miles on the legs first. I have a feeling the 800 to 1,000 ft climbs are going to be very tough. But it should also be a great experience and something to aim for.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate10 in reply to damienair

Agree with Irishprincess u could do this now if u wanted. 😊 Good luck... Enjoy... U will smash it!!

Drunken fuelled goals are good😊

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Deals1

Doubt if I’ll smash it but it might smash me.😂 if I do it in under 1:40 I’ll be happy. I always get myself in trouble with drinky poo’s.

Thank you. C25K to 5K races, parkrun, 10K, 10K races and now a 13K mountain trail race. It’s been a great journey and great experience so far. I should have started running years ago.

Wow, now that's a whole nother type of a run...enjoy it 👍😉

Also, that must have been a hell of a night for you to feel the need to volunteer 😳🤣

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Run46

Ha yeah. My brother-in-law was involved in organizing the event as he is a team leader in the Mountain Rescue Service. He told me about it whilst on a night out. I told him I could easily do it. He laughed and reminded me the next morning over breakfast. My Sister and I were registered there and then.😀 No backing out now.

That sounds like fun! I can't wait to read all about it. My last 2 trail races we got a large porcelain coffee mug and a stainless steel beer mug. Love it!

I’d love a stainless steel beer mug 🍺. Although beer got me into this mess.😀
