New Shoes ! Black but a Bargain !

Off I went for my gait analysis at Runners Need and had me on the treadmill running wearing lots of different trainers....I didn’t expect a group of Japanese tourists standing around watching me !!! It was so hot in there too.....OH decided to leave me to it and walk around the shop whilst laughing 🤣

Result was that I am a neutral runner and decided that Brooks Glycerin16 in half a size bigger were the perfect ones for me. Didn’t want to fork out £120 for pink ones (sorry to all you pink lovers) but didn’t have my size in other colour so left without any but purchased some hilly socks.

Work colleague said she had exact model & never worn - perfect size - Black - £60 so I had to have them.

ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE !

Worn couple of times dog walking to break in before running

Worn twice running 2.5k and 5.5k

Suffering shin splints/ache in lower leg at front/calf ache too - during run and after (never had this before)

I have stretched before/after and am concerned as never had pain in my Nike Downshifters and don’t want to keep running in the Brooks if causing me discomfort.

Should I run alternative runs with my old trainers ?

Any advice muchly appreciated please 🏃‍♀️

Week 1 of Ju-Ju’s 10K plan completed !!! 👍

Very nice pic. What a handsome pair! I will have to let someone more knowledgeable comment on the medical query.

Thanks Stephen, yes they are rather handsome but we will start to fall out if they keep giving me pain ! 🤣

You probably just need to give each other a bit of time to let the relationship blossom.

Oooh, your new trainers look fab with your tangerine-dream socks. I do hope they aren’t causing your current discomfort. I’d suggest resting up a couple of days and then doing your next couple of runs in your old faithful Nikes. Noticing how you feel after should give some indication whether it is a shoe thing or perhaps something else.

Well done on completing week 1 of Ju-Ju’s plan! 😊🙌

Thank you my lovely, thanks for the advice and think your right....going to give it a few days and wear my old faithfuls ! Never had any pain with my Nikes but have had knee burn, calf, lower leg niggles and feel like I’m not running how I was (feels slightly strange if you know what I mean) maybe too bouncy.

Shame if I have to sell but me and Mr Brooks will be falling out soon ! 🤣

Hope your getting out there too and back to running very soon 🏃‍♀️

Had a lovely dog walk today out on one of the nearby commons. It was lovely, really warm even though the sun was still hiding behind the clouds. Isla and I passed a group of runners who were all chatting and I felt so envious! Foot is not quite right yet but I’m heading to yoga tomorrow so looking forward to that.

Hope your aching running legs are back to being happy legs soon 😊

It was a gorgeous day and so warm, hoping you can get out soon once your foot behaves itself but yoga is fab too so enjoy tomorrow.

I have ESPA muscle rub on my legs at the moment which smells like peppermint and sure I will still reek of it tomorrow (fancy eating peppermint creams now) 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

Nice shoes!! I can’t help with your query tho! Sorry........

Hello !!! Haven’t seen you on here for a while and hope your well and still running too.

Thought I would give Ju-Ju’s plan a go, I have got up to 7k previously but going to see if I can get to 10k (although sometimes I still struggle to get to 5k) x

Hello, yeah still here and still running regularly. After running the Manchester 10k I don’t want to carry on with that distance as didn’t really enjoy the running for that. Glad I did it but back to running 5 k 3-4 times a week and that’s enough for me. I enjoy that.

Well done keep going, I know what you mean about struggling for 5k, I still find each run a challenge and not easy peasy! Never mind, one day it might be!!!

Xxx

Shin splints are usually a sign of landing heavily on your heels, eg when tired. The new shoes have a 10mm heel drop whereas the old ones are 12. You might just need to take time to adjust, although it’s not a big change.

Thanks so much for the info Coddfish....I’m quite stealth like when I run and slow so don’t normally land heavily but mid foot so surprised I had any pain but will try my old ones this week and see if any pain during run wearing those.

Hoping it’s just a little blip. 👟

I’m not sure why you are running in the shoes with loose laces? I’d wear them properly tied up or they aren’t doing their job and may cause discomfort or injury.

RunRunRun13 profile image
RunRunRun13Graduate10 in reply to Dexy5

Oh no they are not loose - just re read my post what I meant to say was not tight as I know sometimes that can cause discomfort.

Had your friend had the shoes for very long? I was told trainers have a box life of 18 months (was told not to run in mix ups I had had for a couple of years as cushioning had hardened)

Read ‘mizunos’

Although I don’t think glycerin 16 have been out that long. On my second pair of glycerin 16 and - yes they only had the pink

Thank you Lynne and to be honest I didn’t ask how long she had them. They feel quite wobbly if you know what I mean when I’m running (not as stable as my Nikes) but I will try my old ones this week and then give the Brooks another try....if we still don’t get on then they will be rehomed on Ebay 🤣

If they are a 7.5 UK I would be interested lol

They are a 6.5 🤦🏼‍♀️

It might not be the shoe. It could be more about increased mileage. Have you upped it significantly?

RunRunRun13 profile image
RunRunRun13Graduate10 in reply to misswobble

No increase in mileage misswobble and actually reduced the mileage that week so no idea ! 🤔

Strengthening calves, ankles and legs is important to avoid shin splint, also avoiding increasing intensity before you’re ready. If you’re pushing the pace too soon then ease back. Running on the trail sometimes, rather than solely on the road, can help too

Rotate your shoes so you’re not always wearing the same ones 🙂

Calf strength exercises can be done easily at home on the stairs 😃👍

Thanks so much for the advice, yes I’m trying to do lots of calf stretches daily now (aren’t they a delight) 🤦🏼‍♀️

Going to be wearing my Nikes this week and see what happens.

I should be over 6ft soon with all this stretching 🤣

How did you get on in the end with the shoes? Last week the bottoms and tops of my feet were hurting, my ankles felt like they were going to snap... calves hurt, quads hurt... meh... So I finally caved in and used some birthday money to buy some trail shoes - OMG!! The difference is insane (I’m running around our local forest)... I knew within 200 metres of my first run in them that they were going to be amazing. Wish I’d done it sooner 🙄. Hope you resolve yours X

That did make me chuckle, we seem to get over one ache and then there is another 🤣

Nice to treat yourself and glad the shoes are a dream for you and lots of lovely forest runs. Let’s hope all the aches disappear 👍

Gave mine one more try (3rd run) was still getting pain whilst running and afterwards, then wore my Nikes for a week and nothing so going to part ways with the Brooks and will sell them, shame don’t know why but just not working for me.
