Magic Plan, Week 1

That's the long run done, my longest one ever. 5.5k and in fact a teensy bit over because I was enjoying myself and forgot to check mapmyrun for the last split. Really pleased because I felt rubbish after my short run on Monday and I was worried I'd lost my running mojo somewhere... πŸ˜… We had torrential rain and thunderstorms last night so I avoided the woods and stuck mainly to pavements, worried my knees would play up but all fine. Took it incredibly slow and very very steady. "Only" a 5k to squeeze in, hopefully at Parkrun on Saturday, and then that's week 1. Just feeling very chuffed right now, good luck to everyone else on the magic plan. πŸƒ ☺

Thank you! I was glad for grey skies and light drizzle this morning after Monday's hot and messy effort!

in reply to Debston

You know you're a runner when you enjoy a grey and drizzly day more than sunny one... What have we become? πŸ˜‚

Well done Debston. What a great run - your running mojo looks pretty good to me. πŸ˜ƒWhere did you find the Magic Plan?

I'm also just starting out on the 10k plan, I've done my long runs first and will do the 2.5k tomorrow followed by 6k on Sunday. I don't know how you feel/felt but I was a bit worried about the increase in distance so slowed it right down and knew I still had something in the legs at the end of 5.5k so was pretty pleased about that. I think the C25k has massively improved my stamina and ability just to keep going.

Yep, must admit I felt very daunted and decided to get the longest one out of the way. Feeling much more confident now, I could happily have kept going a bit longer so that has really boosted me for next week and the 6km. Are you going to try and up your pace for the short run or just keep it slow and steady?

Julia187 profile image
Julia187Graduate10 in reply to Debston

My thoughts exactly get the long runs done first!! No I'm not upping the pace, I'm going to keep it slow to begin with as I'd rather know I can manage the distance and complete the runs. Please you're feeling confident :)

That's how I feel, slow and steady has got me this far so why mess with it. I might speed up the last half a km if I feel like it when I do my next short one but probably not.

It will be odd to "only" do 2.5k tomorrow, I've been doing 5k 3 times a week for the last 8 weeks!!

The great thing about the magic plan is that it gives you a little achievable victory :-) almost every week (W5 and W7 which are repeats being the exceptions). If you stay slow and steady you'll probably find your 10k pace, when you get there, is not that much slower than your original 5k pace. The short run is the one where you might play about a bit, but equally you can stay slow on that one and just count it as a recovery from the long one. And then let the competitive side of you out on Saturday mornings :-) - your Parkrun times will almost certainly improve, though not every week - we all have the odd horror show now and then :-(

Well done, keep going :-)

Thanks, UptheStanley, I'll look forward to mini victories each week and yes, I would love to see my Parkrun time coming down over the next few weeks. ☺

Well done. That's a fantastic start.

I'm all over the place at the moment because I've got the Race for Life 5k coming on Sunday.

I ran my W5 long run 8k on Monday and because I'm doing R4L as my W6 5k, I ended up doing this week's long run (another 8k) tonight so that I can have the short run on Friday. Managed to run tonight's run a minute faster than Monday's, but I do wish I'd paid more attention to my scheduling last week so I didn't have this snarl up.

Ah well, onwards and upwards.

Enjoy Parkrun on Saturday.

Wow, two 8ks so close together, well done you! That's amazing. Good luck for your Race for Life, 5k will seem like a breeze now, surely!

We can but hope. Happy with tonight's run even if my planning skills leave much to be desired.

Well done. You make it sound easy. So maybe it really IS magic.

Well done for the first step across the bridge. I think you'll find it much easier than C25k - most of the hard work is done already. :)
