First UK Run (post Australia)

I spent Sat shopping for warmer leggings and water-resistant trail shoes. I then did a run in the wind and rain on Sunday morning. Couldn't wait for the local running group as I'm still on Australia time so waking up at 04:30, and was hungry and wanted my breakfast. So I ran to my '5k away' friends' house and had a cup of tea with them, then got a lift home. I like my friends!

Now I need some '10k away friends'.

I have spent days looking out the door first thing in the morning at the UK winter weather and contemplating a run. Spurred on by accounts of windy, rainy runs by you lot I finally did it, and you know what? It was fine. In fact I enjoyed it! Yes really!

My list of goals for 2019...

Aim for a yearly total of 700km.

Run the Middlewich way (probably in 2 legs).

Run the length of the Macclesfield canal (in more than 2 legs).

Keep cutting down on single use plastic, and put more effort in to it (go to market and buy loose fruit and veg not plastic packaged from supermarket etc).

Never walk past a homeless person without looking at them and smiling/saying hello; seeing what I can do to help. Homelessness has reached epidemic proportions in the UK and it's NOT acceptable.

Happy New Year everyone😊

Welcome home Baddie! What fabulous plans for this year. Hope the jet lag resolves itself soon and the weather is fine once you get going isn’t it?!

I’m running with my local GoodGym (which is a ‘virtual’ gym) to a homeless shelter tomorrow evening. They have some jobs for us to do to help with their clients. 30 - 45min volunteer work and a social run 😁👍 Last week we were painting inside a house that is being refurbished for an Advocacy Movement charity that helps displaced people and those needing urgent shelter. As well as group runs there are individual ‘Coach’ runs to the elderly at mutually arranged times to give them some company and/or help with little tasks they can’t do any more (need to be basic DBS checked). So, if you struggle to find some current friends within 10km it might be worth seeing if there is GoodGym group near you?

Welcome back Baddie and I like your 2019 goals. Over here our supermarkets (from 1 Jan) banned single use plastic bags, but they are still wrapping their veges and fruit in plastic hmmmm whats that all about? Who needs cucumbers in plastic? ridiculous ☹️

We need to be more vocal. Leave excess plastic packaging with customer services, write to CEOs etc. Not always easy to make the time but needs doing!

Welcome back! Great goals, let’s change the world by running (and being kInder and more considerate).

You have VERY understanding friends- or very early rising friend! 😂Love your list for 2019.

The homeless thing is awful and exacerbated by austerity measures. I bought a pregnant homeless girl breakfast recently. I also chatted to a very respectable middle aged lady with all her belongings on a trolley. She had been sleeping in a shop doorway in Chipping Norton- probably the first person to do so since the 1800s. I couldn’t help her as I pay for shopping with my phone and had no cash. She was on her way so no chance to go home and pick up a card to get money out of a machine. If I’d seen her the night before, I would have taken her home for the night. She was very bitter and said nothing is being done.

Sometimes the authorities 'ban' rough sleeping, which is appalling.

My ex worked with the homeless. He used to do the rough sleepers head count in Oxford every year with the police. He said they were told by the council to underp,ay the figures but didn’t. At one time they were moving the homeless on out of the town so that it looked as if the problem was less. Now there are people sleeping in almost every doorway in the city.

There has to be something we can do...

It’s a political matter and needs tackling on that level. Other than volunteering etc I don’t see what else you can do. Use social media to share any articles, news etc about it (which I do)

Welcome home. Madam Loris has joined the plastic police. I'm banned from using cling film now.

I'd already postponed for a couple of days. Finally had to go and get on with it. Looking forward to spring!
