I had a lovely break over christmas, and my half marathon training runs are going well, but I currently have YET ANOTHER COLD!!!! What's up with that? I'm considering alternatives for swimming this week, AGAIN. Grrrrr... 😊

I'm not big on New Year resolutions, just planning to carry on getting faster and stronger.

1st day of back to school today. I’m not enjoying the prospect of the daily alarm clock, but getting my fitness routine back will be a bonus! Christmas holiday was great for chocolate intake but my fitness schedule disappeared.

In general I’m not running 3 times a week at the moment, mostly due to icy weather πŸ™. I’m just getting out when I can, not trying to improve or get stronger, I’m just holding onto running as a discipline. I’ll pick up my times and distances when the thaw comes.

Tried treadmill running but it bores me silly. I just love the great outdoors,

Happy running everyone!

Sounds like a good plan to me!

Hi! HNY roseabi and all in here. Well. I managed to keep running through the break, thanks to Parkruns and less pressure for work (as I am self-employed). But a couple of weeks taking it easy on my runs, inc. being a 40m pacer, saw my 5k time slip backwards on a NYD freedom run (sub-34min but felt too hard) after volunteering as backup timer for the main run. So, I had a word with myself, got the diet back under control, ditched the alcohol, got some sleep, got out last Thursday for a 4.5k with the dog, and set a Parkrun PB under 33 minutes and a Strava 5k best of 31:51 :)

This year, I have a 'Resolution run' 10k in early April to aim for, then triathlons. But for the rest of the winter, I have to lose some weight. I didn't gain anything over Christmas, which was a relief, but I've joined the HU weightloss forum now and will be paying more attention to my food choices. I think ditching 2st before April is going to be just as useful to my running performance as training for longer distances!!!

Aim for this week, though, is to introduce cycling. Although I can ride a cycle and used to get to school on one, fitness cycling is a new skill for me on a proper light road bike (Giant). I'm still working on my confidence with those skinny wheels and twitchy steering. Not got cleats to worry about yet - just peddle cages. I have a nice supportive saddle and warm cycle tights so I just need to pick nice weather and practice. It feels like starting C25k again - but on a bike!

roseabi in reply to Equi-geek

Awesome! Looking forward to hearing how you get on with the bike - I've got some bicycle work ahead of me too! I suggest warm socks for cycling at this time of year 😊

Thanks - oh yes, my footwear is still lacking - another good reason to be a fair-weather rider to start with :D

I tend to agree - my toes get pretty chilly even in the summer!

Equi-geek it sounds like I'd I'd like to get back to just where you are at now. I was doing so well. I was mixing it up with the cycling too and enjoying that- by myself though despite my husband's persistent nagging to join his club 'relaxed' ladies. I'm not one for the group stuff.

I could blame cold, dark, Xmas laziness but I just lacked the same motivation I had. Then getting back to it I've put myself on the IC.. Frustration central!!

Good luck with your continued efforts with all your pursuits πŸ‘πŸΌ

Hi folks

I haven't posted for a while, but still plodding along, just about.

I signed up for Ju_ju's 10K plan and was doing ok. My speed wasn't increasing much but stuck with it despite the dark dark mornings- I run better early! But I slacked over Xmas and ran only once in 10 days. πŸ™ˆ Then back to it last week and ping 😦 about 4K into 2nd run of the year and I've torn something left calf. Painful. Ankle swollen and bruised so I'm forced onto IC . Was set to do my first 10K in Feb, but so far only ever got to 8.

I shall have to rest- although dog still needs walking 😏and hope with time I can get back on track. It seems ankles and calves have been my weakness since I started so must strengthen them in time.

Happy New Year to all - the nights are getting lighter πŸ˜€πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

Ouch 😒 Go carefully on your walks and I hope you repair quickly! How about some swimming in the meantime? xxx

Hi - following a horrible flu lurgy and chest infection that stopped me running early in December ( yep, it really has been that long!😫), I am now a lot better and hope to resume running this weekend. Half marathon plans WAY out now, so I don't think I can be counted as one following your plan any more, Roseabi - sorry. πŸ˜• BUT, keen to be back out there building up my runs again, with an additional resolution to try and do more cross training this year!

Happy running to all on here.πŸ™‚

Not to worry, it was good to have you there, and I hope you'll be ready to try again in a short while!!

Returning to the fold after a couple of months consolidating my C25K and trying not to get put off by the cold damp mornings triggering a bit of asthma. Haven't had an attack since childhood and it's only stopped me running once (Boxing Day) but it's enough to make me struggle occasionally to get myself out there. I need to not have an excuse, and I have an intermittent running buddy, but today I joined a gym and used a treadmill for the first time. My God, they make running boring... on the other hand, I was warm and dry and not wheezing, even if it did feel oddly easier and a bit like cheating.

So the plan now is to do the Bridge, which seems mad: doubling my distance in a couple of months, but then I went from nothing to 5k in about the same time, so, uh, I guess I can do it.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to FenderTelecaster

Have you tried listening to podcasts on the treadmill? I find they make it fun 😊

Yes you can do it!! Are you joining the Magic Numbers?

FenderTelecaster profile image
FenderTelecaster in reply to roseabi

When I'm running outside, I have playlists of music at specific BPMs to help me pace myself, and much as I love podcasts, I found the absence of a beat really messed up my pacing (too fast at first then running out of steam). However I can set the pace on a treadmill and just stick with it.

Yesterday was supposedly just a gym induction so I didn't take earphones. Turns out the 'instructor' was not the greatest inductor in the world (it was about on the level of David St John in Spinal Tap saying 'this one goes up to 11'), and rather than listen to him mumbling confusingly about a bunch of machines I'm never going to use, I decided to actually run instead.

Do I have to officially sign up somewhere for Magic Numbers? I must've missed that bit.

Sorry Fender, I didn't spot your question! You can sign up for Magic here:

Hello, I completed my first parkrun before Christmas and have run again since but my back has been sore so have taken it steady. Missing the motivation of the voiceover on couch to 5k telling me when I have completed various milestones. Need to keep motivated I feel soo good when I’ve been out for a run!

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Fittyfitfit

Well done for the parkrun - they're so fun! Hope your back problems ease asap so you can get back there xx

It seems to me that your motivation is right there in your post: you feel good after a run! When you're struggling to get outside and run, or when you start to flag mid-run, remember that feeling and go 😊

Tallismorley profile image
Tallismorley in reply to Fittyfitfit

I’ve found it harder since finishing Couch25k too but there are lots of encouraging people on this forum, which helps. I set myself the modest goal of still running for 30 mins 3x a week by 6 months after Couch25k. It’s almost worked and now I’m thinking of setting a more challenging target. Also joining a local group maybe. Good Luck.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Fittyfitfit

I carried on using Week 9 of the C25K app for a few weeks after I graduated, so I would continue to have that voiceover. There are other apps that can be used in a similar way, and with new goals to reach 😊

How did you get on last week?

Haven’t written on here for a while. Last year I took on a 500miles in a year running. I completed that end of October. This year I have signed up for Copenhagen half marathon in September. January is the busiest month of the year at work for me so struggling to fit in runs. Did hit 28min 5km at the weekend which was amazing for me. The trouble is my running partner is unwell with her mental health at the moment and she is a great runner ex triathlete so I’m going to miss her for a while. Need to step up the distance from February can run 12km but with time restraints I’m just keeping my maintenance runs going at the moment. Good luck with all your goals

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Trendywends

Good luck with yours! You'll get there. Copenhagen half sounds good!!! xx

Happy New Year!

I had a good Christmas in the UK but have struggled with jet lag, the heat and a cold/cough since landing back in sunny Singapore.

On the plus side my husband has started the c25k so I’ve joined him for some interval training! He is able to run way faster than I do... my daughter is still training too as she wants to do the 10k without stopping outside (water breaks okay though!)

For me, I’m happy plodding along for this month. I’ve been to a yoga class as I know I need to work on my core strength and flexibility, so I will add that in once a week in addition to a Fitness class and still run 3 times.

Next month I will start half marathon training 😬 and hopefully lose some weight!! It sounds a lot when you write it down but am reasonably happy with the plan!

Happy running everyone πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Hi, l love reading everyone's posts here it really motivated me.

Anyway, hubby and l have signed up to a virtual run of 25 miles in January. I did manage to keep running over the holidays 3 times a week and that is my plan to keep to 3 times.

I bought some warmer leggings but unfortunately they fall down!! My fault for not spending much money!

Well done! Hope you enjoy your January challenge - keep us posted xx

Those long tights can be a real pain - I also do not spend much money πŸ˜‚

I was all geared up to start juβ€”ju’s plan but strained my calf at the Christmas Day parkrun

Saw physio yesterday and he reckons I won’t be able to run again for 3 - 4 weeks. I’m gutted!

And getting rapidly less fit. So l’ll restrict myself to perfecting my planky planks as well as doing all the calf strengthening exercises he’s given me, and hope to catch up later!

HNY to all. I've done really well achieving and beating my annual goal of 500 miles in 2018 and carried on running every other day until today. Moods were off today for some unknown reason but at least I got out for a walk with the other half. I'll get back to it tomorrow.

Aiming to keep with every other day for the moment. Not looking to push the distance too much just now, after my overdoing things last summer I'm more concerned with keeping up regular runs to keep me sane.

Aiming for 750 miles this year so if I can stick to every other day that should be well within my grasp πŸ€œπŸ‘πŸ˜

I do want to get into a routine of doing more stretching and yoga on my off days. I've been getting lazy with it. So that's my goal. Do something good every day πŸ‘

Thought I'd say hi. I graduated today so now on to consolidate my runs so I can hopefully just enjoy running for now. My motivation can change a lot in relation to running, fitness and taking care of myself in general. Unsure building 10km at this stage. Just sorting out my self care routine. I hope I can keep running through winter. ☺
