Ran the Christmas lunch off today with a lovely 10k. The 10s are getting easier but I can definitely feel the toll the longer runs take on my body. 6 months ago if you'd told me if be running an enjoyable 10k on Boxing day I'd have guffawed loudly in your face and yet here we are ๐Ÿ˜Š Merry Christmas everyone and happy running ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™‚

I used to think that 5k would be the pinnacle of my running career (career? lol!) but now 5k has become quite routine, not something to be scared of any more. 10k is never a walk in the park, pun intended, but I never doubt that I can do it any more. A year ago I'd have laughed if you'd told me I'd be doing 5k regularly, so yes, I do know where you're coming from, and you've done brilliantly to get to this point.

I ran just 2.5k today which I should probably post about, but I really enjoyed it. I could feel yesterday's indulgances though!! You did really well getting out and running that distance after Christmas day.

Good on you!!

Thabks Flara. It's good for a long run as it's an old railway line so long and straight. A deceptive uphill outward climb but great for finishing strong coming back down again!

Thanks MD...so many 10ks today!

Gorgeous place to run. Well Done you. 10km is a very respectable distance and I give my body the rest and respect it deserves after doing one :) Maybe they'll get easy peasey ? I'm not sure....

I'm not sure Paula. It also takes me a few days to recover each time I do one. I can get to 8k without any issues but 10k just seems a step too far for my legs! I hope they get easier...I suppose I am still a newbie in running terms! And I can't see myself getting past 10k anytime soon! Time will tell...happy running ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

in reply to Saartjie

It's exactly the same for me Saartjie. 8k is my new 5km - not too long at all. However, 10km is still quite a challenge and I need to recover after one. My plan is to keep with the 10km s as a long run for 2019 and then maybe, maybe i'll increase my distance. Happy Running to you too. It's great that you are listening to your body.

I've heard a few people say 8k is their favourite distance. Who's have thought 2k would make such a difference?!

mountaindreamer profile image

I think one of the tricks with longer distances is making sure you slow your pace down even more, at least to start with, until you get used to the new distance. So perhaps try deliberately running slower so your legs have more left in them for that last 2k?

I find each new distance is tough until itโ€™s been repeated quite a few times, then it seems to get easier. (Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m training for HM distance now, even though I donโ€™t plan to race one until next May! The more times I get chance to repeat the full distance the easier Iโ€™m hoping it will become.๐Ÿคž)

Iโ€™m convinced the distance thing is part about pacing yourself and part psychology. I need to set off telling my brain how far we are going to run each time, and my brain needs to feel confident it can make it! ๐Ÿ˜‚โค๏ธ

How lovely Saarjie, and I recall telling everyone on the forum that I only wanted to do 5k because of my age, my knees etc. I am still totally amazed at how much we have all achieved in 2018.

Our family guests leave later today and I am hoping to get out and run some of the food and drink off . 10k is a bit ambitious as I havenโ€™t done that distance for 6 weeks but Iโ€™m going to be restarting jujuโ€™s plan in January to build up again. Happy running.๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

It's amazing isn't it! I just wanted to be able to run for half an hour to keep fit. Now I can run for over an hour! Not sure how that happened ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Well I do...it was in no small part down to you lovely folk on here.

Juju's plan is great for that. I didn't do a 10k for a couple of months after the first one! It's quite nice building up again knowing that you can actually do this thing. Merry Christmas Dexy ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ˜Š

And you. Iโ€™m now in a horizontal position watching tv after 3 days of being chef and hostess for the guests. Maybe not run today after all. The ๐Ÿ›‹ is back!

Congratulations Saartjie, 10K is a great distance! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ I seem to be a bit out of sync with everyone as I did 5K on Christmas morning so no run for me yesterday๐Ÿ˜•

Iโ€™m aiming for 13K this morning though so that should help blow the Christmas cobwebs away๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคž

Looks a lovely place to run Saartjie! I havenโ€™t run since I did my 10k on Sunday (although have walked the dog each day!) so back to parkrun tomorrow, then to decide when to do my next 10k, if only to prove it wasnโ€™t a fluke ๐Ÿ˜‚
