🔟 Magic Number - W1R1 - 5.5K

Got up and out at 6:30 this morning. An hour later than usual, but with a two and a half year old with absolutely no concept of lazy Sunday mornings... I'll take whatever I can get.

Took my warmup walk down to the beach, it was a pleasant 12 degrees with a light breeze. I walked into the beach carpark and it looked like an absolute state... rubbish everywhere, I was actually quite shocked! Aah! leftovers from the nights firework celebrations ...so sad to see, there are plenty of bins all down the path, I can understand the fireworks not going in the bins but everything else... 🙄

we'll see what can be done after the run.

I got my jog on, it felt like I was in the mood for something quick-ish today but kept it down for the first KM, through the second carpark more rubbish... spent fireworks and chip wrappers. it was feeling nice just over the 6 minute KM pace so I carried that on for the whole run. My knee felt a bit niggly on my rest day yesterday, but it was all feeling great today, what a lovely run. The tide was up and you could really hear the waves lapping at the shore over the music, with a fresh breeze blowing. I was glad I opted for the t-shirt actually, as there were a few fellow runners that had wrapped up and looked pretty warm.

Over the big ramp at Lee on the Solent, Phew... really takes the wind out of me that one!!! ...and on until the Nike app told me when 2.75K was up. Turned around and headed on back, maintained my pace and finished the 5.5K in 33:22, a thoroughly enjoyable run. I promise I will utilise those extra snails that you kindly gave me on the next run cheekychipmunks I was just in the mood for it today 😁

As I approached the carpark a few people had already got stuck in to the litter picking, what a great way to combine my warm down walk with some stretching I thought and proceeded to chase chip wrappers around in the breeze and bin the rubbish ...a bit more bin watch than bay watch... but I don't need much of an excuse to spend time at my favourite beach, I did my bit and headed home before the rain came.

Job done.

Hope you're all doing ok everyone and a big hello to all Ju-Ju's Panther Cubs 🐾🐾

Fantastic TS! A perfect run. Sometimes they just happen against the odds don’t they? And to spend some time litter picking after was brilliant. Good for you. 👏👏 Hope the lazy so-and-so’s who couldn’t be @@sed to use the bins appreciate people like you.

The snails are a patient bunch. They’ll help you whenever you’re ready for them, otherwise they’re happy chilling and doing nothing much. Happy 🐌🐌🐌

Have a great week! 😀

in reply to cheekychipmunks

Cheers cheeky! A good start to the week I enjoyed that one. It really does baffle me, they must’ve sat in their cars and watched the fireworks, then just opened the door and dumped their cr@p on the floor??? Don’t get it...

When are you planning on doing your 10K cheeky? 👍

Amazing run Thundersloth! 🤩🙌

You amaze me with how early you’re up & out!... 💪👌

Great time... you’re absolutely smashing these runs! I bet you powered over that ramp today! 🔥🔥🔥

It’s so sad, the amount of litter left 👎 Excellent job joining forces to help clean it up! ... We often go to organised beach cleans, collecting plastic, it amazes me how much is always collected 🌊♻️🌎

I might have to suggest a new name for the picks... ‘bin watch’ ... I like it! 🤣👌

Well Done! 🤩🤩🤩

in reply to

Thank you Dreams, I’m definitely more of a morning person! That bloomin’ ramp and I are definitely not friends, but it didn’t beat me today I gave it some welly 😆💪

Oh great job with your beach cleans, good on you - I’m dead impressed ...I think they must do them down here... I will have to sign up with the kids - great idea you, it is shocking what ‘us’ messy humans get up to isn’t it?! 👍🙌

in reply to

There’s definitely something special about the early morning... although my early runs are more 6.45-7😬

Good on you giving that ramp some welly! 💪👌

Yeah get the kids involved in a beach clean, I bet they’d love it, my two do... it’s amazing what you find! 🙌👌

Great start to the programme, ThunderSloth (fab name too, made me chuckle). How lovely to be able to run by the sea, breathing in all that lovely fresh ozone. 😁👍 Happy running (and happy litter picking - I do this too, on my cool down walks.)

in reply to Sadie-runs

Thanks Sadie, I just read your last post it sounds like you have a real passion for running now. Great that running has become as much of a routine as brushing your teath 👍 you’ve fully cracked it for the long haul. There were some great thoughts and advice in there too, I enjoyed reading that.

I’ve never really noticed the litter previously, but it was impossible to ignore this morning! My eyes are open now... and I’ll be doing the same on my cool downs in future - great idea 💡

😃🙌💛

I do love running so much. 😁 And completing B210K really was the cement of this; since then I have continued to see real progress, and I love the longer runs I do on the weekend, I really look forward to them. I look forward to seeing you get there (bin liner in hand 😁).

Thanks for your kind words about my last post. My other top tips for 10k training are: focus on distance, forget about speed; do calf raises when brushing your teeth (strength training by stealth!) get a strong core - planks and side planks! Getting a strong core has been a game changer for me. 💪

I’m cheering you on!

Sadie-runs x

in reply to Sadie-runs

Aah fantastic! thank you for the support! And those little gems of advice, perfect 👌 thank you so much 😊 💎

My ‘core’ does appear to be made of marshmallows at the minute... so planks and I are not getting on very well at all ...yet, but I’ll work on it!!! 💪

Cheers Sadie-runs x

We go litter picking with 'Rubbish Friend's and have experienced the after fireworks detritus

Great run and brilliant work helping with the clean up operation 😸

in reply to Katnap

Oh yes, I remember you mentioning Rubbish friends Katnap, took me a while to click that it was litter collection... I thought you were being rude about your running group for a start 🤣

My gosh I bet it’s awful after a big display, well done - I’m going to get involved in our local one I think 👍 🗑 hope you and the family are all ok

Ah. The joke name. I wasn't being horrid. Jokes can be misinterpreted when written so I try to use emoticons as a nudge 😸😁

The idea I had was to start a rubbish runners group. Have a bit of fun, a bit of exercise, and litter pick.

Which is just what you did today! 😸

Not that I'm saying you're a rubbish 🏃 😁😁😁

Happy running!

in reply to Katnap

I’d be very happy to be the south coast arm of ‘rubbish runners’ I think it’s a fab idea good on you matey 🤜🤛

in reply to Ibot

You know me Ibot I’ll have a crack at anything, ...whether you can call them talents or not is another matter 😬🤪😁

Wow, that time is making a statement for the rest of your programme! T shirt in November? The world's gone mad!

in reply to Now-runner_NeedsAttn

...I’m not going to let you egg me on Now-runner I’ve seen your PB you speed demon!!! 🤣👹

Yeah! T-shirt in November very mild this morning don’t know what’s going on there?? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great pace ThunderSloth! Sounds like a superb run. :)

in reply to kwell39

Thank you kwell39! Very enjoyable run indeed 👍 Which run are you going to tackle first? I’m quite looking forward to the 2.5k interval run too... might give that a go next 🤔

I have a training plan with MMR I am running parallel with Ju-Ju’s. I am a little ahead of Ju-Ju’s plan as I stated shortly after my graduation and a couple consolidation runs. I did my long run at 6km Saturday and it was lovely. I have one shorter tempo run on Thursday’s, short run on Tuesday’s and long run on Saturdays.

I have also downloaded several body strength fitness apps that I am tested out to see which one I like the most, for my strength training two-three times a week. I really have noticed a huge difference in my pace after a few weeks of squats, burpees and core exercises.

I really have become quite addicted to this running thing. 😂

in reply to kwell39

That sounds great kwell39 good job. Great to hear that you enjoyed your 6K on Saturday too that’s fab 😀 🙌 keep us posted on how you’re getting on. Yes, I think I’ll be keeping my long runs for the weekends, that sounds like a good plan.

I’ve been using the Nike Training Club app for my rest day exercises and have been really impressed with it actually. It really has been great, they have run specific training plans or you can just pick and choose from a variety of other workouts depending on what you’re after time wise or for specific muscle groups.

I’ve been having a go at their plank workout today, but the side plank with scissor kicks proved a step too far for me...🤣

It is really addictive isn’t it kwell...

I’m completely obsessed 🤯🤪

I downloaded the Nike Apps - running and training - and will check them out. I did order some resistance bands and found some strength training exercises for runners. I think I will try them later this week. Hopefully I don’t fall over! 😂😂

Great run TS! There’s only one 5.30 on my clock and it isn’t in the morning. I couldn’t get up and run that early especially not at this time of year (although did run at 7.00 in summer to avoid the heat). My plank is rubbish too 😂

in reply to Sandie1961

🤣😂🤣 that made me chuckle Sandie!!!

Ooh yes, I didn’t experience running in the heat of the summer I started late August but I have heard lots of people saying that it was extremely hard work in the heat. Especially if you were over in France too!

( I think we need to up our game on the planking Sandie... these guys seem to be all over it at the moment 😳)

A great run ThunderSloth!! You’re lucky to be able to run by the beach. And well done for joining the clean up crew. It is a shame that some of those who have enjoyed the beauty of it, don’t think to respect it a little more.

Brilliant photo!! 😁😁❤️

in reply to Fabulous450

Absolutely! well said Fabulous 👏👏👏👏

What are they like.... I’ll never understand.

Thank you! 😊 ...loving my beach path

Well done ThunderSloth, I didn’t realise you are a local. I too am absolutely appalled at the rubbish people leave around the beach or even on Southsea Common. There was a beach clean in Southsea yesterday- it’s such a shame they always do on the same day as parkrun when we aren’t able to join in.

Well done for missing the rain too. It sounds like you had a great run along the Solent.

in reply to Dexy5

Aah right! I’ve just seen your Southsea Park Run post Dexy great video! I’ll have to pop over for one when I finally pluck up the courage to run with other humans 😂 I bet it’s absolutely brilliant running Southsea seafront. I did consider entering the south run 5K there just before graduation but chickened out...!

I’m impressed with the friendly rivalry you’ve got going on at the park run too that’s great 😁 adds a bit of extra spice to it 👏🔥

Ooh... I bet you have seen some sights over there on the common, not good... why are people sooo damn lazy?!?!

Thank you very much Dexy 😄

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to

Yes I’m always amazed when we go Lee-on-the-Solent at how different the view of the Isle of Wight is, otherwise our runs are fairly similar. I’ve just checked out the Lee parkrun, but I don’t like the idea of running on the shingle at the end of the run. I guess this is to get everyone off the prom for the benefit of pedestrians?

in reply to Dexy5

Yes! We always say exactly the same thing Dexy5. Seeing the forts out in the Solent from the Southsea end alone makes it look completely different!

I run from Hill Head to Lee and then back again. I have to cross the pebbles once at the Hovercraft museum slip way, but I certainly wouldn’t want to do any more on the pebbles than that really, it’s only about 30 meters, but still a bit of a trudge... I’ll have to get down there on Saturday and check out the route. I’d imagine it would only be that little bit in front of the Hovercraft museum, I’ll definitely be nipping over to Portsmouth on the ferry if it is any more than that!

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to

Yes you are right, that’s where the shingle is. If you google parkrun Lee-on-the-Solent you can see a map of the course.

Enjoy ju-ju’s plan- it does work.

Very nice run on the beach <3

Finished strong and then cleaning beach - what a lovely and thoughtful thing to do!

in reply to IgaT

How’s you today Tiga? Still on cloud9 😄 thank you my friend 👍💛

IgaT in reply to

I am getting back to reality ;) I will try today combining ju-ju's W1R1 (2.5K) with 30-20-10 that was suggested in the post what to do after graduation ;) Will see how it goes ;)

Are you now on Magic 10?

in reply to IgaT

Oh great, yes! You can do them in any order you like so I went for the 5.5K first and I think I’m going to go for the 2.5K intervals tomorrow, quite looking forward to that one actually... I’m going to use the Nike app to sort out some intervals though because I think my limited brain power significantly decreases whilst running 😁 and counting intervals is not an option 🤯

Great to hear you’ll be joining in the fun IgaT 👏👏👏✊

IgaT in reply to

I am joining but not sure if this weak. I will see how it's going, as I ran 5K only once and it was a stretch.

I found app called Run 10-20-30 by Henrik Baastrup. I have no idea if it's good.

Oh, I didn't know you can do them in whichever order you want :)

in reply to IgaT

That’s fair enough IgaT it’s a flexible plan so do it when it suits you👌

Oh that app sounds exactly what I’m looking for, I’ll download it and use it tomorrow - thank you so much for the tip 🙌😃
