The chocolate superhero boost

I went for my second headtorch run today and it was really nice to go out in the dark and return just as the sun was coming up. Then a few strange things happened.....

1. I got Wonderwoman THEN Catwoman ( I always buy 2) in my Kinder Surprises... my favourite female superheroes.

2. Then I had to get a new notebook from the cupboard for work ( I go through them quickly, I have a system) and I opened it and there was a quote there that said,

"Start by doing whats necessary, Then do whats possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible," ( St Francis of Assisi) WOW, I so needed to read that...

Sometimes things happen like this and it has given me a boost and a reminder that I need to keep at it because sometimes it is hard and we do all need a bit of something special...

So- are you winter ready, and has anyone had a similar experience of things happening like this?

Juju

What a coincidence! Maybe the chocolate gods are trying to tell you something?? lol.

Winter ready? - This is my first winter running, and I still don't know what to buy/wear! I have some leg underskins already, and will buy a top skin to go with.... but no idea on jackets or jumpers etc!! Its all so unknown!! arrrgghhh

It will be fine... I say layers, a waterproof, BUFF and headtorch with front and back lights...... sorted. When it snows I may add in a wooly hat and thermals ;)

I ran into the wind along the clifftop so that it would be at my back on the return. When I turned round so did the wind but twice as strong. At one point I'm sure I was running on the spot. There were no super heroes in my porridge.

How dare it, perhaps it saw it as aiding your training by making you work harder?!!

Love the winter ready bit, just as I do your distance ready, distance dial in and reset week concepts that you practise.💥💥💥

Also love your, running is the golden thread that binds us salt of the earth runners.💥

You are on the leading and cutting edge of this streaking stuff and these concepts you have found and using are transferable to the running norm situations.

There is a book there.🤔👏👏

Of course we are all uniquely different and have different needs but also some stuff can be just appropriate and of an almost one size fits all.

Go you.💥🏃‍♀️🐆👑💥

Tbae you should write books, you say everything so eloquently... and yes our golden thread ties us all in this lovely world of the forum :)

That quote summed up my state of mind this morning. My run was a lot of walking tbh because of the new scary hills, but I was wondering as I tootled along whether, over the space of the next 5 years or so, I might be able to run up the steep one one day …. it was bad enough walking up it this morning!

No superheroes in my fruit and fibre. My husband just made me an egg and bacon buttie though, does that count?

well done, and egg and bacon buttie..... hell yes!!!!

I woke-up on the wrong side of the bed this morning! No idea how I got there, must have levitated in the night. I've never see Lady Lordi from the lefthand berth! Strange!

Yeah, I thought I'd been unfaithful for a split second (how I imagine it must feel I hasten to add...)

I've never done a headtorch run, I must have a go at it before it gets too cold here in Finland (then I will retreat to the bunker).

What an intriguing set of coincidences. I cannot report anything like that happening to me recently.

I don't want to be picky, but it is practically impossible that St Francis (in 13th century Umbria) wrote that quote. I fully agree with the sentiments (A journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step) but it doesn't read like St Francis.

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate10 in reply to MarkyD

It is in an Oxford Black n Red notebook..... perhaps they just make stuff up?

Practically every "motivational" quotation that you can find online is either made up, or totally mis-attributed. I know that I am a dreadful pedant over these things.

Lordi profile image
LordiGraduate10 in reply to MarkyD

Shirley It would be in Latin too?

MarkyD profile image

In Umbrian, and painted on the side of a coffee goblet, or written under a fresco of someone doing a handstand at the top of a mountain.

I'm not getting winter ready when it's still technically summer until next week lol, plus i get a sweat on going out with more than a t-shirt as it's still 18-23c here albeit a bit blowy today.

It's lovely when the universe gives you directions, ju-ju. :-) I see you are a DC Super Hero kind of gal? Captain Marvel is my go-to for inspiration. I love that quote. Thank you for sharing, it really was something I needed to hear right now too.

As for winter ready, I am looking forward to it! I like running in the dark, thought miss my woodland during the week. I am not quite mad enough to run in the woods in the dark, I was raised on fairy tales. Last winter I was still a very new runner, so had a lot to find out about how to dress for colder weather. At one point I even wore woolly tights under my running tights – not great. But! For my birthday this year I got some warm winter gear from Ronhill. Not sexy, but so warm. Almost looking forward to the sub-temps needed to run in them! On the whole though, I just change my shorts for running tights, and vest for long sleeve top, and Buff – and then I am good to go. I love running when it is cold.

Serendipity! What a great start to the day. And a great quote from the patron saint of animals - perfect!

Not sure I am winter ready, but I have a thin waterproof jacket and a small collection of hi viz! I am also planning runs that are mostly in the lit and well-populated areas of my home town as I always run early mornings in the dark. I also have some thermals that I use when mucking out the horse in the depths of winter so will probably double them up as running thermals. Do I need gloves and a hat? Not sure as this is my first year running in the winter (or running at all haha! :))

Sadly nothing similar has happened to me today although myself and Dobby had a lovely 4k run at 5.30 this morning which always sets me up for the day! x

Gloves!

I use cheap “buffs” to keep my head dry & warm.. no hair on top to speak of.

Have also fitted flashing lights to my high viz vest.. lit up like a Christmas 🎄. Don’t give the numpties a chance to say “ I didn’t see them ” .

Great advice re buffs - I have a couple somewhere. And they sound better than a hat! Better invest in a pair of gloves though - I’ve just bought some flashing lights so I’ll attach them tomorrow for my morning run. Thanks for the advice! X

Sounds like planetary alignment is controlling the superhero and notebook gods today!😃❤️ Thanks for sharing the cool quote. I now want to start buying Kinder eggs so I too can have my own little superheroes! 😂😂😂

Haven’t had chance to try out my new front & back lit head torch yet, but looking forward to that. I’m still running in shorts and a T-shirt during daylight hours, so dressing for winter is going to be a whole new adventure...😊❤️

Do you use any sort of grips on your trainers for the ice, ju-ju- ? I don’t fancy running on icy pavements without something. I’ve got some cheap rubber ones with tiny spikes and coils, but they kept flipping off my shoes when I tried walking in them last winter. Could do with recommendations for some that should stay put!

Head torch runs. There's a new idea. Set off before the sun comes up. There's a new idea. Get up before the sun comes up. There's a new idea! Winter running. Never done it. Erm, there's yet another new idea. Wow all these new ideas from just one post.

Chocolate. Finally something familiar 🍫
