Amazing what new shoes will do. And before you think I've completely lost my marbles, that is the absolute LAST dip into my inheritance for running gear - the rest really does have to go towards the proposed house move. I now officially have more running clothes and shoes than ordinary. And let me tell you, I am getting 1000% more pleasure from them than anything else I could think of buying - so you can keep your foreign holidays and your wine and meals out. Mind you, Mr I Don't Snore treated me to an amazing meal last night to celebrate our anniversary. He won tickets to Country File Live at Blenheim Palace, so we walked miles in boiling heat yesterday looking at everything, then came home and went to a place that cooked me a vegan meal to my own taste from scratch - I had a herby, tomato pasta dish with vegetables and garlic and olive oil, then a bread pudding type of dessert with gooseberries and raspberries and some sort of ginger sauce. Oh, and there was raisin and rosemary bread and focaccia to dip in olive oil, and a dish of olives.

OK, the run: first of all, let me say that my breathing is abysmal at present. Even though Mr I Don't Snore has clipped Dennis he (Dennis that is!) is moulting profusely at the moment, with the consequence that I am coughing up blood streaked brown phlegm in the mornings (sorry for the graphic description) and I'm puffing all the way round a run. It was 16 degrees when i went out this morning, 18 when i got back, and it's still extremely humid here. Ankles are puffy today too.

To get back to the shoes: On Cloudsurfer. I would hesitate to say a pair of shoes could make that much difference to speed etc. but this morning I really did run faster and with less effort, and I feel marvellous now despite heat and humidity. They are so comfortable and feel kind of springy, but they seem to give that extra push when you're running. I'm a mid-foot striker, but these shoes propel me onto more of a forefoot landing, which seems to give me a bit more propulsion. Also got 8 hours sleep last night for once. don't 'arf make a difference!

But once again I've brought my pace down slower by standing there failing to turn off my Garmin. Despite that, very happy with today's run.

Lovely.. lovely...and lovely..

New shoes...a great run...wonderful.

A happy evening..delicious food..(yummy)...lifting the soul and obviously your feet too.!

Take care of yourself Flick..it is so humid and the air is full of pollen and spores..despite the rain...

Who needs stats..you are doing wonderful things 😊x

in reply to Oldfloss

Thank you Floss! Pollen doesn't bother me, but apparently dog dander does. I've had hounds the whole of my adult life, so Dennis is my first non hound and he has Spitz or some other Arctic breed in him, which gives him a very dense, greasy undercoat, and that seems to be the problem.

I love the stats, but only after the event, and honestly I'm still learning what some of them mean. The only one I take notice of is the 1k buzz, which also shows me my pace for that split, which is useful. I certainly don't run looking at my watch.xx

Tree spores with me and worse after rain..yes learning what stats are and mean is enlightening...it was ages before I knew what splits were😉

Please don't describe food that graphically, I was drooling.....

I have allergies too, so I sympathise totally.

Keep being our inspiration. 7K is like 'from here to the moon' for me, just managed 5K Parkrun......

in reply to theoldfellow

Thank you for your kind words. the food was indeed amazing :) As for 7k, I've never done a parkrun so your ahead of me there, and i bet you're faster too.

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellow in reply to

You'd enjoy a Parkrun. They could certainly see you coming! I might be faster, but that will be more about stride length than pace I would think.

I mean it about Inspiration. I keep thinking: if Flick can do it, then I can do it. Just maybe not today... :-)

in reply to theoldfellow

You CAN do it. I can do over 12k now and would never have believed that 10 months ago when I began c25k. I’m jolly well going to enter s half marathon next year if it kills me (let’s hooe that last bit isn’t prophetic 😳). So if I can you can 😊🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Lovely 'noo shoos', lovely day out yesterday and lovely run - what more can you ask for? Have to admit I struggled in the heat this morning - don't know if it was humidity or just that I ran early, before breakfast! I find I run much better later in the day and certainly after breakfast usually, but it is lovely out early so think I'm going to try and do it more regularly and see if it gets easier!! Hope your allergy settles soon too, Flick. Take care🙂x

Thanks Sandra ❤️ It was cooler today but still humid. It’s funny, I run better early morning, though I’m finding as time goes by I can run at any time. In my early post grad days, some runs were aborted early because it wasnt the right time, and I was struggling. Thanks for your kind wishes re allergies. Only I could be allergic to my own dog! 😂😂😂 X

Lovely to both your run and mmm to the food, think raspberries and ginger sound amazing together. Half marathon? Go you! you’ll do it Flick X

in reply to lexi6

It was the first time I’ve had a meal in one of those places that gives you smaller portions but presents the food beautifully. It was more than enough, and the first time I e ever eaten a meal out where I haven’t struggled to finish a huge plateful. Thanks re the run🙂 well why not a HM? She says gulping 😂 Im really looking forward to it. I think I need the weather to get less hot and humid before really increasing my distance x

I’m grumbling about the incessant rain and wind here but can’t imagine how hard it must be to run in the heat and humidity, it must cool down soon? 🤞

in reply to lexi6

I love the heat, but it’s been 29degrees here regularly, and you’re supposed to add on 10 degrees when you’re running.Ive learned to carry electroyted water and wear a hat, then I’m ok.mind you, when it’s very hot I get an embarrassingly red face, which Mr I Don’t Snore pointed out to me, having passed me in the car one morning on his way to work. I still prefer it to winter though. I hate winter running. Here it curtails most of my runs if I want to go early morning or evening, because it’s too dark to go off road. Also hate the first ten minutes when I’m walking to the beginning, and then getting going. I either have to freeze, or else wear beanie, gloves, buff etc, all of which I will have to remove later because I get too hot. Boo, there’s no perfect weather x

Ha ha! My OH regular as clockwork when I get back from a run says “you’re looking suitably pink” yawn!and I say every time 🤬 (actually far worse. This is my first winter running so need to woman up really but think I’ve got SAD so have challenged myself to get back on juju’s plan and get over myself. I loathe winter in Wellington and then the sun comes out and all is forgiven

in reply to lexi6

Haha, at least he was tactful enough to say pink. Mine just told me I was very red 😡

He’s learnt “the look” means trouble and tones it down I actually come back beetroot, not pretty, but as he gets older he’s becoming less diplomatic or praps I’m becoming more intolerant

in reply to lexi6

Mine is an Aquarian. They have no idea of the meaning of tact and have an irresistible urge to say what they think on all occasions, whether the info is going to be well received or not. My face is beetroot with ominous white patches 😡

Aah Aquarian makes sense that explains my daughter very well, that is sooo a description of her. OH is a very untypical Leo, me a Gemini - crikey. Red face must be good for our health? shows we’re still alive

in reply to lexi6

My sister, ex brother in law and niece are all Aquarian, with the same urge to tell the truth at all costs, no matter how unpalatable.

I like Leo, it’s my rising sign 😊🌻🌞 And .gemini is fun, full of new ideas. X

A sound investment in my books. I just need to convince the family I have two birthdays this year...

😉

Ps hope the allergies get better 🤞

in reply to MatildasPb

Couldn’t agree more. A second birthday? Like the Queen you mean? Hmm ... there’s a plan!

I wouldn’t have a problem with breathing If we didn’t have Dennis. Any time I’m out of the house for a couple of hours, my chest clears. Of course, that doesn’t help with running, so I have to use an inhaler before a runx

Oh I do like the orange! It's so jolly! I hear you with the house-move-not-shoes resolution. I completed on my flat sale on friday and immediately bought some new flyers for work... Arguably entirely unnecessary. But fun 😀 And there are far worse vices out there!

My On trail shoes are orange too. Very uplifting colour.

Oh, well done for the flat sale. Are you moving to another town/village or whatever, or just another residence?

And you need to tell yourself the shoes were necessary! 😉

I'm casually looking for a new place in Edinburgh now but am currently renting so pressure is off a little—it was my tiny wee flat from Brighton which I've been renting out that sold, turns out I'm too soft to be a landlady as I cry whenever anything breaks or the flat gets hurt. Which is a lot..! Urg I loved that flat, living there was brilliant, right on the seafront. But I've sold it to a lovely first time buyer who will look after it, he emailed me to say how much he loves it yesterday and I was so happy 😊

Definitely necessary. No excuses left not to get out at lunch time now!

in reply to Sqkr

I understand that. I was so glad to sell my house in Oxford to someone who fell in love with it.

Yes, out, run! 🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️

Just casually reading the thread. I would like to move to Oxford but somebody told me it's ridiculously expensive compared to Cambridge.

in reply to Chrisj31

It is, but prices have dropped there recently. You could buy a 30s terraced or semi for between £300-400,000 now, probably needing some work doing. The close you get to the centre the higher prices go, but they’ve dropped by anything up to £100,000.

That's the first vegan meal that has piqued my fancy! Sounds lovely.

Fab shoes, pleased that they are doing great things for you 👍😁

in reply to GoGo_JoJo

I love vegan food, but it’s hard to find anywhere to get a decent vegan meal eating out. That one was amazing. And thanks re the shoes. I don’t think I will run in anything but Ons from now on. I have several pairs, all brilliant in different ways.

Well done on your long run today!! And happy anniversary!!

Your shoes sound really great! Just hope you’re feeling ok now! This humid weather isn’t great for running but I’m not wishing it to rain either!

I’ve got a week off work now so hopefully I’ll get out a bit more! I work in a supermarket bakery for my sins and it’s very physical with very early starts!! I’d rather be running but need to fund my hobby!!!! 😀🏃‍♀️

in reply to Sarakc

Thanks Sara 😊 and actually I felt a huge endorphin rush towards the end of the run, and it’s stayed with me. I felt marvellous when I got home.

Do you actually bake on the premises? That must be like Hell’s Kitchen in the heat.

Sarakc profile image
SarakcGraduate10 in reply to

Oh that’s great! I love that endorphin rush too!!

We’re a “bake off” store as it’s one of the smaller supermarkets so we don’t actually bake from scratch!! We disappoint quite a lot of people when they find that out! I mainly do the pastries!! Basically prep the frozen products on trays for next day which we bake off and ice and package etc! Job involves a lot of heavy lifting and moving racks around!! All good exercise! You’d never need to waste money on a gym membership!!! 😀

Ah, you’re one of the people who over cook the pastries. When I lived in Oxford, our local Coop didn’t cook the bread quite enough one week and got complaints. So forever more they burned everything just to make sure! I don’t like my pastries dark brown, it destroys the flavour ☹️ god, what a grump I am. You probably cook them perfectly 😊

Good morning Flick. Great post as always. Especially the foody bit, with your wonderful description I could almost taste it all as I was reading yum!

I think you should become one of those food critics / or is it someone who can bring food to life with wonderful descriptions 😋😋anyway you should be one of those!

Cool colour shoes too ! They look really comfy.

I was working yesterday and became an overachiever, gained a japan badge according to my fit bit . I did over 13,192 steps which equated to nearly 10k. Oh the joy of badges hee! That was walking around the operating theatre department ,collecting patients, anaesthetising them then transferring them onto the operating table etc etc. So all in all it was a busy day. Lots of broken limbs that needed fixing due to falls while walking dogs, running, whow the list was endless! So needless to say I have not ran this morning! Will try on Tuesday hopefully.

Hey Flick hope your looking after yourself ? Take care in this hot weather.

Your run time is good especially in this weather.

Anyway take care Flick ❤️X

What I really would love as a job is reviewing mobiles, computers, cameras etc. I would be in heaven 😇

Phew, your job is mega strenuous!

Are we running together Wednesday again? Xxx

Unfortunately I can’t as I’m at work ,but I’m off Tuesday,Friday and then the weekend so let me know.

This week I’m working Wed, don’t know how that happened as I’m usually off Tuesday and Wed. Never mind I’ll be off for three days after Thursday. Roll on next year (she said excitedly 🤣🤣)xx

Love the orange shoes!! Think you'd be a very candid reviewer of running clothes and paraphernalia too!

in reply to Slinkymalinki

That would be fun too. I should do a blog - that’s how you get sent gear to try - but I’m too lazy. I already have one on writing and publication that I haven’t added to in years.
