24 seconds off my PB! Down to 31:33. I reckon if my ParkRun was 5k and not 5.2, I’d be almost down to the elusive 30 minute barrier. Still improving so that’s fab πŸ€—

Yep- find a 5K flat park run and I bet you’ll be doing that very soon. Mind you, at the rate you are knocking that time down it won’t be long before you do it there. That’s brilliant!

Thank you! I’ll bloody get it eventually even if I nearly keel over in the process!

You'd think they'd be pretty accurate at measuring a park run given they repeat it every week. Mine shows as 4.9 according to garmin but I do wonder if its garmin that's wrong. Your watch/phone should show you the time for the 5.0 out of the 5.2 though.

That’s true. Takes me down to 31:10 πŸ‘ŒπŸ½ plus the sprint wouldn’t be in that time so somewhere around 31 minutes I reckon πŸ‘πŸ½

Others there get it way over 5k too. 5.1-5.2. That extra is a long way when you’re targeting a certain time!

Something isn't quite right though. If your at 31.33 I'm not sure you can knock 23 seconds off. Usain bolt does the 200m in 20seconds. Be great if you did it in 23 hehe

I’m running at over 6 minute km! 360 seconds divided by 10 is 36. It’s coming up 100m extra on Apple Watch. MapMyFitness had it at 200m. Is that right? I don’t know. Anyway the course is long.

Oh I see it's an apple watch. You probably ran to the moon and back then πŸ˜‰

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply to pinkaardvark

It’s more accurate than MapMyFitness

pinkaardvark profile image
pinkaardvarkGraduate10 in reply to Tasha99

That's just a app so it's as accurate as your phones GPS. I'm gonna say you are so close to 30 mins that you will smash it next time with ease πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž

Oh it’ll be a few weeks or months yet! Thanks though!

Ooooh sooo close!

That's great! Do the Parkrun when the official one isn't on and stop at 5K. Just a thought. Good work! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ’¨

Good idea although I run faster in a ParkRun as the other people being there must pull me on plus the adrenaline I guess πŸ‘πŸ½

in reply to Tasha99

I get that ! Haven't done a PR yet, but done my fair share of charity walks/runs - WalktheWalk Moon Walks (in a bra!) and Race for Life, and yeah, you rely on the crowd to carry you on. Great atmosphere eh!? 😁

Love it! Got the local 5k race tomorrow too! πŸ’€πŸ˜‚

You have to take the racing line all the way round to hit the 5k, that is the line taken for measurement as I understand it. I always wondered why my local pr came in at 5.2k on my route planner, until an experienced runner told me to aim for the racing line.

Great time there TashaπŸ‘πŸΌ

pinkaardvark profile image
pinkaardvarkGraduate10 in reply to Millsie-J

Mine is 4.9 so I must be really tight on that line hehe

Yeah.... but you already said you were questioning your gps.......

I guess it all depends who measures the course in the first instance.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduate10 in reply to Millsie-J

I think most ParkRuns are either side of 5k from what I’ve read on here and heard from chatting. Some are over and others are under.

I agree, I have now run 7 different ones, including abroad. But 200m is not an insignificant amount. As I say, think about the racing (shortest) route and accept that the exact measurement depends on quality of the team originally measuring, although in fairness to PR volunteers, they always do their best in everything they do.

Tbh you are probably better to relie on your own measurement of distance and time if you want both to be absolutely spot on, even if you are timing your parkrun.

Hi Tasha99, Well done you!! Whoopee, whoopee!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ 24 seconds off your PB that is seriously marvellous! I wondered if you might like to read the most recent post of linda9389 as in it she describes her progress to a sub 30 minute 5k. She feels that Ju ju's 10k plan really helped and explains even more in her reply to my reply. Well done again! I am hoping you now feel massively better than you did when writing your, 'What's going on' post. I am sorry I didn't manage to answer that one, I so meant to, but things happened. Happy running to you! A few more whoopees, whoopee, whoopee for your great run today! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Awe thank you! Yeah I’m feeling much better. I’ve done ju-ju-β€˜s plan, although it only took me 3 weeks to go to 10k. I consolidated for a few weeks but I do get bored on longer runs. I think it did help me though. I’ve recently joined the gym and do some speed intervals there twice a week, and am starting to include some hill work. Also I’m working on my leg and core strength. It all seems to be paying off for now πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

Conditions and the course can make a huge difference so pick a course that suits you and is probably mostly tarmac/good paths and largely flat. I'd also recommend starting further forward. some runs can take 20 seconds or so to get to the starting gate.

I also dropped 45 seconds by running in better shoes.

My personal best time included a 2km walk to the start from home as a warm up.

I also use Strava to analyse what exactly happens. E.g. start quick and die over the line, or slower and build to fast finish, or just a comfortable pace all round. My faster times are using the second of these.
