Exercise on non run days

So I have just started yoga classes on non run days as I am hoping the stretching and building a better core will improve my running.

I was interested what others do on non run days.

Should I be looking at other activities too? Can it be possible to do too much yoga? Should I just do it once or twice a week and also maybe do weights on one of the other rest days?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated

I swim every Wednesday morning for about an hour! Been doing this well over a year now and my fitness has improved so much! (Sat here now in pool cafe!!) Apart from walking and an active job that’s all I do! 😀

Good recovery non running activities are swimming/walking/cycling and or a combination of them in the gym.

I don't think you can do too much yoga especially not the stretching parts.

Don't forget the weights in the gym though as well as squats and lunges etc. Stuff that hit's the glutes, quads, hamstrings and abdominals are all good. I just do all the leg machines in my gym together with crunches 4 times a week and find it really helps.

Your glutes for example are important in supporting your hips and by activating them will stop your hips dropping and damaging your form as well as transferring stress elsewhere. Just for general interests sake, you can have great glutes but not actually fire them, good info here livestrong.com/article/5513...

Is it really infantile of me to be chuckling at the fact that article was written by someone called "Kyle Arsenault"?!

I'm a big believer in moving the body constantly so anything that moves, strengthens, stretches has got to be good. Just find your drug of choice and keep at it.

I do weights, gym work, reformer pilates, the odd swim and lots of heavy gardening and stretch every day. If I can't move, say from a long car journey, my body aches so I move as much as I can. It's what our bodies are meant to do.

Loads of people do yoga every day. GoogleMe does, I believe. But like everything else, ease into it.

I do yoga occasionally. I should do it more because I feel so good afterwards. I also ride my bike sometimes. I would like to start with weights. I’m looking forward to reading the answers to your post.

I don't have time to do any classes or anything (I used to do roller derby a couple of times a week, but work put paid to that 😪. I still benefit from a skater's core strength though! I reckon I could out-plank The Rock) but I do cycle/walk a couple of miles every day. I consider that crosstraining...right? My job is entirely non-active, unfortunately, unless you include screen breaks to the nespresso machine.

Yoga teacher friend says you can't do too much yoga - just don't push yourself too hard each session or do lots of really tough poses every time! But if you're choosing between more yoga and weights perhaps more variety is good.

I do weights and resistance training once a week.

I do the 7 minute app "Seven" every day which throws a mix of exercises at you. Sometimes aerobic, sometimes stretching, etc. I think I need to do yoga or Pilates too but it's finding the time.

I practice yoga most mornings. On non run days I swim, walk, dance and go on the occasional bike ride. Variety is the spice of life.
