Help! Am rubbish turning off my run on my Garmin, and it's making my average pace slower:

Nice 7k run this morning (though I was shamed when a very large middle aged lady went tanking past me and left me in the dust); but I'm rubbish at turning off the run on my Garmin. It happens every time: I press the button to turn off the run and it unlocks the watch, then locks it, then unlocks it, and finally I get the red square to stop the run. I can change the hard drive or put a new graphics card in a computer; I can work out most computer software problems, set up my running watch or a new phone; but turning off my run in one go has me flummoxed. You can see from the splits - look at the pace on the last one ... that was me standing still trying to end my run. My average pace would have come out a bit faster but for that. It's so frustrating! Could any Garmin owners - especially Fenix - please talk me through it in idiots' guide terms?

I just press the start/stop button which stops it, it then asks you if you want to resume and I use the down button to change it to save and then press the start button again to accept that. Then it shows me the stats and I press the back button a couple of times to get it to go back to watch mode at which point it usually says updating and shows a record if one has been achieved. I don't have any lock mode on the watch like you seem to talk about so no need to lock/unlock.

Thanks Mike. That's exactly what i do, but it locks and unlocks first. You DO have lock and unlock mode. You lock the watch through the menu under the screen light button. I think I had better unlock it before running. I dont do the back button to watch mode bit as it asks if I'm done and i select that (perhaps that's what you mean). I guess the answer to this is not to lock the watch :(

I had never seen that menu by holding the light button down until now when I just tried it lol. Safe to say I have never locked mine nor felt the need to :) The buttons are stiff enough that I can't imagine stopping it by accident while running.

I think you're right, and I've just unlocked mine!

I have a Garmin but it's not locked when I'm running. Don't think mine (220) can lock if I'm using it. But your model might be different. Have you checked your settings?

in reply to Irishprincess

Yes, the Fenix can be locked via the circular menu under the screen light button. I usually have it locked, and i think that's what the problem is when I come to save my run. I'm having to unlock it to access the stop sequence, but then I'm pressing again and it's locking it again. Hopefully, with it unlocked, one press will take me to the run screen.

Despite the techie glitch super 7k!

in reply to Ripcurlrana71

Thank you! I really want to push beyond 11k, which is my longest run so far, but I keep being foiled by other stuff.

I changed from TomTom to Garmin and had problems switching off my runs too. Sometimes it would take me a minute to switch it off, very frustrating. but then suddenly I got it. I just had to relax. I get the red square and wait a couple of seconds and it ask me if I want to save it, I click on it and bingo. Done. What I previously did wrong was to keep pressing or clicking on and on waiting for it to go off or save. All I had to do was patience.

in reply to nhs2015

Thank you, yes, that’s exactly it. I’m aware of having to press more than once when I shouldn’t be. Then panicking because the timer was still running and I wasn’t 😳 I’ve been using a garmin for a couple of years: you’d think I would have got it by now!

in reply to nhs2015

Also I’m getting the padlock symbol coming up

Apps tend to be like that, they have a mind of their own, mine said I was running at 7k pace when actually I was on my couch (I should not have used that word!!) at home not moving at all.

PS I graduated yesterday and it's not a case of 5k2 couch, I will continue running.

I've never locked Garmo, I like to flick through the screens to see what my heart rate is up to sometimes so it's nice to have the options active throughout my run. I've never yet stopped recording accidentally, even when I'm fully layered up in winter, so I don't think a lock is really necessary. (I say that now, sods law I'll do exactly that next time I'm out.) Then like others have said, that means it's just one swift button press to get the red square, Garmo asks if I'm done or if I want to resume, I click down to done and voila! Fanfares, trumpets and dancing girls! Orrrr maybe just the recovery screen if it's a regular training run.

in reply to Sqkr

Oh, and I think it can be set to be unlocked during an activity.

I think I was more worried about the buttons getting pressed in my sleep as I wear Ming the Merciless 24/7

Crikey, that's very dedicated! Fair enough then. I reckon it's definitely worth giving it a go without the lock though, what's the worst that can happen? Aside from your average speed will suddenly shoot up and you'll have to try to stay on top of those shiny new pace gains... 😋

in reply to Sqkr

Unlocked he is, and has been since this morning 😊 As for dedication, Ming is my watch. He counts my steps, tells me how much sleep I’ve had, monitors my heart rate all day, tells me when and who is emailing/phoning/texting/whatsapping. He even tells the time!!! Why wouldn’t I wear him all the time? I can even go swimming with him, and he will tell me my swim statistics. I find it all endlessly fascinating. And as he’s a handsome fella with a nice leather strap, he is my pride and joy 💜💜💜

Well done on your run! You go out so early! I’m missing my early runs I used to do before I graduated!

I’m at the thinking stage of getting a running watch like a garmin but worry they sound a bit complicated!! 😀

in reply to Sarakc

It wasn’t by choice that I woke up so,early, and I was shattered when I got home and fell asleep. I would totally recommend a Garmin. They are as complicated or easy as you want them to be. I just set mine to buzz each kilometre, then read the stats when I get back. Just press run and off you go. You can fine tune as much or as little as you want. I think people assume they won’t be able to work technology out. You are intelligent and there are lots of people on here to help and talk you through things and lots of online info. Garmin are the best really for, running. Xx

Ah thank you!! I was comparing different ones on line and then not being able to decide! I don’t need the very latest one as I don’t need lots of fancy features as a casual runner ha ha!! I sort of think I’d like to know my heart rate but worried it would stress me out!! I know my resting pulse is very low! 45 to 50! I’d like to think it’s because I’m fit but then again it might not be!! (I’m an ex nurse ha ha!!!)

I start work at 7 or 8 am these days and finish at 1pm or 2 and come home and sleep for 2 hours after lunch!!! Don’t sleep well at night either! I’ve come to depend on my afternoon naps!!😀😂

in reply to Sarakc

I would go for as much technology as you can. After all. You don’t have to use it all, but you can’t add it if you find it necessary later.

My resting heart rate is 53-60 and I’m 71. I think it’s quite low,but so is my blood pressure so I’m guessing they’re linked. I find the heart rate factors endlessly fascinating. It’s good to have the HRM as it helps me try to keep my maximum heart rate down - I tend to run a lot at maximum, so need to watch that. No matter how casual a runner you are, there are always things that can be improved, like cadence. Anyway, if you run several times a week, that’s dedicated and serious 😊
