I have no idea of how far I am running 🤔

Hello lovely running fiends!

So today I decided to do the 7km run of week 3 of ju-ju’s 10k programme. Not trusting either Strava or Map My Run, I fired both up and headed to a favourite route through woodland. It was a glorious run, the perfect temperature at 15 degrees and a light drizzle. I set a pretty slow, steady pace and stuck to it, and got into a lovely rhythm. Ignore my pace in the pictures - clearly wrong!

Map My Run went totally haywire on me, at one point just shouting random stats at me continuously. Strava refuses to tell me anything and will only give me the distance once I save the run. So, I either ran almost 11k or 6.9k! LOL! I am inclined to believe Strava today, as I was running around 45 mins. I ran for a bit longer after stopping and saving, to get to 7k. But who knows? How far I am running is anyone’s guess these days! 😂

Getting a Garmin for my birthday. Until then, I shall be enjoying running random distances it seems!

Happy Sunday all.

Wow that’s is crazy!!!! 🧐 I’m glad you enjoyed the run nevertheless! Well done Sadie 7k in 45mins is fabulous!! x

Thanks Rip! I was laughing by the end of it, what can you do?! No point stressing, am going to have to start guessing! x

Do your splits per K look right in either??

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Ripcurlrana71

I must confess, I don’t understand “splits”! What does that mean? (I can hear everyone laughing at how dumb I am!)

Ripcurlrana71 profile image
Ripcurlrana71Graduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Does your pace per KM look right? Your Strava shows you did 7k at an average 4.17/km - which is super speedy!!!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Ripcurlrana71

Well, just looked and splits are totally out of whack too. 😕 I was actually running for 45 mins, as I checked my wrist watch at beginning and end of run.

I don’t know either ! 🤭🤭

I know. But by my wrist watch I was running for 45 mins!

Hi the other half of the terror team.Hope you are good.

Yes sounds like bring on Garmin.

I have for 3 months at least now just run in the same two locations.

I know boring and no playlist lol.

I have on many occasions walked the routes with Strava Checking and rechecking the distances.

Must say I have found a consistancy.Note I did not say accuracy. lol.

Just completed a 10K this morning, it is very consistent with 3 others and a 12.6k on the same Woodland Coastal Park Circuit.

Must say different problem for me this morning, Strava would not fire up, went into settings and mysteriously pressed airoplane and such relief.

Techie dinasaur, must have woke in the middle of some night and eaten my emojis.

I need this to be right as I build to

my HM in the next 7 weeks and 210 minutes of running.lol.

Keep smiling Sadie and showing the way for the June 2018 Panther Cubs.

Love being called a Panther cub! 😬

Lovely.Yes and I am one too. lol.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Tbae

Thanks Tbae, for your reply. Despite not knowing how far I ran, I really enjoyed this one and it felt good.

I really hope the other panther cubs are not following me - lord only knows where I am going and for how long!

Good luck with your HM training (though it doesn’t sound like you need luck, you are doing great!)

We will follow anyway, and come to heel also when called by our leader JuJu Panther.lol.

Hi Sadie it’s a good day and a good start if I wake up.lol.

Thanks and you are doing great.

New shoes, new techie stuff, your flying.

That's amazing Tbae that you completed a 10k this morning, well done, I wish you all the best of luck for your HM in 7 weeks. Although tomorrow I complete C25K, the last 30 minute run of week 9, I won't have run 5k, let alone 10k or a half marathon. I will probably run about 4 kilometres or slightly more in that time.

Tbae in reply to AlMorr

Thanks Al you are a flyer.

Would die for your pace and in your seventies.

Atb in lovely Helensburgh tomorrow.

I have been building for a few months now.

4th x 10K and a 12.6k. so far.

Loving it Al and even with slow pace the upside I am out there longer. lol.

Lost my emojis. The wife thinks I have eaten them.lol.

Have you downloaded the free apps yet.?

Strava, map my run etc.

I am using mainly Strava.

I answer to anything now Alan.

Thanks, I have an older Smartphone, it is not compatible with those newer apps, I use the RUN-LOG.COM app for my running it tells me distance, duration, pace, speed and calories.

Ah yes, I forgot, I remember seeing that before.

We are a right pair Alan, invading Sadie’s post again.

Does your phone display the five icons at the head of the page. The middle one is for direct contact using your user name.?Atb tomorrow.

Looking at your pictures I am guessing you have an iPhone. Depending on the model the GPS accuracy will I guess be different. The newer the model the better (at least in theory).

I used an iPhone 6S with Strava and Runtastic before getting my watch and never had this sort of discrepancy. I know looking at my watch on a run that sometimes it seems to lose GPS signal based upon where I am running but then picks it up and it all gets smoothed out over the run.

When you run the app it might be worth leaving one of them in the foreground also you could look at background app refresh for them. I don't think it should make a difference but until your birthday wish comes true you could give it a try.

Other than that well done on your run whatever the distance.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Richard7

Hi Richard! Thanks for the tips. I am using an iPhone 6S. Have used Map My Run for 9’months with no blips, so it is a bit of a mystery as to why it is happening now! Strava doing the same, so am concerned it is a phone / GPS issue. Downloaded Runkeeper and going to try that next. Pretty soon will have worked my way through every known app available 😂😂😂

Richard7 profile image
Richard7Graduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Yeah I settled on Strava having noticed it referenced by the Parkruns so figured it must be good. Ironically I still haven't done a Parkrun but I liked Runkeeper - Map My Run just seemed to be full of Banners if I remember. One thing I liked about Strava over Runkeeper was that when you go into Strava it does not activate GPS until you start your run, with Runkeeper it starts GPS straight away. Whatever you do you can export your data in GPX format and import into the other service normally. That's what I did when I moved from Runkeeper to Strava.

You’ll have to plot your route on google, at least then you know how far you’ve run.

Well done though, 7k in 45mins is impressive Sadie 😊

linda9389 profile image
linda9389Graduate10

Either way it sounds like a great run :)

You can also use map my run on a computer to plan a route. It shows you the length (and elevation too which I now always use having found myself setting out down a long long steep hill once on holiday ... with the inevitable painful return!). mapmyrun.com/routes/create/

Remember to uncheck 'auto-follow roads' when your route is off-road or it will send you all around the houses!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to linda9389

Ooooh I didn’t know you could do that, Linda, thanks! That’s my afternoon sorted whilst b/friend watches the flipping football!

And it was a lovely run, no matter the distance mystery.

Trusty Garmin will put it all right, although I had a few teething problems but that was just because I couldn't be arsed to read the instructions :) Sounds like you are flying round though and having a great time, what more could you ask for on any run? Glad you've found your mojo again :)

I managed a slow 5k today, first time in 3 months, so I am also well chuffed! Hopefully it won't be too long before I'm running along after you, although you will be a speck in the distance compared to my times! :) xx

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

I can never be arsed to read instructions! So expect much hilarity to ensue once I get a Garmin. 😂 Mojo on fire right now and am full of the joys, ‘‘tis true. My speed has now become a thing of legend; sadly I suspect more of an admin error because of dodgy apps.

Woo hoo! Well done your 5k lovely lady! I am so happy for you. Keep plugging away, slowly and steadily! I miss you, my running chum. 😘

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Ah thanks Sadie :) x I am quietly hopeful that relatively normal service will be resumed in a matter of weeks. :) Good luck with your next run.

Hi Sadie, brilliant 10.8k, see, I just knew you’d graduate before me! Seriously though, that tech is screwed up isn’t it? The important thing is that you are running, and enjoying it. I’m so glad for you.

Are we really the terror team now? 😂 That’s definitely not my influence!!!

Have a great Sunday ;)

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to

Ha ha 😂😂😂 I just charted the run online and I can confirm that, according to my route, I did run 7km. Phew! I bloody loved this run, despite the tech issues. Forgot how much I love running in light rain 🌧, so refreshing.

Blame Tbae for that name! I have no idea why the terror! Unless this is short for “terrific”? 😁

Happy Sunday to ewe too. x

tech troubles abound! It sounds like you'll make good use of your Garmin. I know we should usually advocate not worrying about stats but it's rather helpful to know how far you've run especially when on a plan for a distance, eh!

Plus, I'm terrible at judging how far a route is, so if I want to run for about 30 min and I want to run different routes I have to plan somehow, so that MapMyRun online planner (others are available) comes in handy. Also to assess elevation when running new roads, as linda9389 says!

Nice run though, sounds delightful - the conditions I had been hoping to run in this morning! But I was later out than you!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to icklegui

Yes, it was just starting to get warmer as I ended my run, so I was lucky. Normally I don’t give too much of a hoot about distance, but it is very grrrrrr that I am having these issues just as I really need to know how far I am going.

That online route planner is fab! I just got lost down a rabbit hole with it this afternoon, planning a long run in Battersea Park. 😁 I have also mapped out next weeks long run of 8k (eeeeek).

Happy running to you ickle. xxx

icklegui profile image
icklegui in reply to Sadie-runs

Thank you, you too! I've also been planning a run somewhere new/old - from my parents' house, which I don't visit often enough. Hugely useful. Your progress is fab, keep it up, keep blazing away ahead (so we can follow)!

I’m local to you and recognise that park! The local 10K run on Remembrance Sunday is two laps of the park if that’s any help?

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to BLEWI

Oh! You are Beckenham lass too?! I have not heard of the Memorial Run, shall look it up. But the route could be a good one for my 10k graduation run. This park is just beautiful, and they are building a wild swimming lake in it now. 😁 x

BLEWI profile image
BLEWIGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

I’m actually in Chislehust now but was born in beckenham and work in Beckenham so know the area but haven’t yet run it!

Heres the link for the 10K don’t know if they’re doing it this year? beckenhamrunning.co.uk/race...

Aw, I love Beckenham so much. Place Park is glorious to run in. 😁🏃‍♀️

BLEWI profile image

I’ll have to give it a try soon!! I have childhood memories of the white squirrel!!

My runs involve running round the duck ponds and then through the woods at Scadbury! We’re very spoilt in our neck of the woods aren’t we!!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to BLEWI

They painted the squirrel! He is now a red squirrel!

Running in woods is lovely isn’t it? And hey, if they run that 10k again this year, I’ll do it with you. 😁

BLEWI profile image
BLEWIGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Oooh you’re on!! Although I need to clarify I haven’t run it before! I only started running recently and did my first 10K a few weeks ago so this all new territory for me but I love the idea of doing it with a fellow forum girl!!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to BLEWI

I have not run any race before! And I have not yet run 10k - but we have until November...lots of time to get more km on the legs. It could be fun! 😁 And we get to support each other. 👍

BLEWI profile image
BLEWIGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Have you done the Parkrun at Beckenham Place Park?

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to BLEWI

Not yet - but once I have done this 10k programme I might! You want to do it? Looks like a nice course.

When I have problems, usually drop outs, I've been told to restart the phone which does something to the GPS signal. Might help, might not, but worth a try. To check the distance you can log into MapMyRun and create the route. You know the duration so it'll be easy to calculate your pace. Best done on a laptop or pc though as it's tricky to get the hang of. Once you do that you'll see which is closest and go with that one in future. 😊

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to

Thanks Sutsha, I’ll try that! And yes, I discovered you can plot a route on map My Run on a laptop - it is fantastic! x

Just checked this out and was quite surprised it was recorded and fairly accurate. For some reason though it saw my warm up walk as part of the run, but the cool down as a walk!
