Foot problem

I just did the 5k of the last week of Ju-Ju's plan, only 4k & 10k to go.

However I am getting my old blister problem back. The last couple of runs including today I've worn a compeed blister plaster but today it became sore at 2.5k. It's where the shoe upper meets the sole at the base of my big toe (MTP joint). It's not blistered yet but very tender and it's developing a callus just under it (lovely!). The whole area feels 'delicate' so I don't want to file down the callus - it may be protective.

This started with my last shoes when I was building up distance and didn't happen when I changed my shoes 6 months ago. I wonder if I should consider new shoes again? But I have a 10k event in a month and don't want to have to cope with new shoes.

Any ideas? Sorry for the detailed description above ๐Ÿ˜

I wonder if it's the way your foot moves when you run rather than the shoes Joy. It might be worth going to see a podiatrist.

I get a flaky hardened area on my big toe joint sometimes and I've put it down to the fact that that foot is bigger than the other one. Perhaps you have one bigger foot too. It's fairly common and would make sense as there is less room in the shoe for the bigger foot and perhaps this area is where the friction is.

Yes it is on my left foot which is my bigger one. I was thinking about a podiatrist so I'll look into that locally. Many thanks for your reply x

Could it be the way you are tying your laces allows the shoe to move around do you think? Try Google-ing Heel Lock and perhaps give it a try?

Also, either lather on Body Glide or Vaseline to any areas that rub before your run.

I've done the Heel Lock lacing so will try that for my next run. My daughter has laced her shoes like that for years & I never knew why! She has very narrow heels so has always had problems with shoes fitting properly.

I've just run 4k this morning - got it in before the Sunday dogwalkers got out! I took a triple approach to the blister problem - I put a dab of vaseline on the area, covered it with a blister plaster and used the Heel Lock lacing. It was much better- at 4k I was becoming 'aware' of it but not painful. I've also ordered another pair of twin skin socks as my others have probably shrunk a bit, and the foot cream that pinkaardvark recommended. I'll arrange to see a podiatrist as well. Hopefully all that will sort out the little blighter! ๐Ÿ˜„

As a runner you can expect to get blisters and nd such like Maybe all your weight is to one side of your body when you run so you get hard skin and blisters on one foot. So do I.

I am strengthening at the gym and working to balance myself up I use cheapo Vaseline Pre run. The ridge or area of hard skin can be gently smoothed off.

I used to suffer terribly from blisters and used this stuff amazon.co.uk/Gehwol-Cream-S... which helped. Thankfully I don't get them so much but still occasionaly use the cream as it smells nice, has peppermint so can be refreshing.

Surgical spirits rubbed on regularly will harden skin. My gymnast daughter had to use it on hands when she was competing on parallel bars

My daughter worked with a national coach and all the nationally seeded gymnasts used this method, it worked. Just saying......

Yeah I have no evidence either way. Some people decry it, others say it hardens the outer layer so is good for certain activities but doesn't prevent blisters(you just get them deeper). Personally I believe in keeping the skin supple and soft.

Some people even like to pee on their feet on the basis that the urea does the same thing as the surgical spririts lol.

Lot's of points of view here forums.runnersworld.co.uk/d... interesting that Marathon UK say don't do it.

blisters are normally caused by moisture and rubbing of the skin either against a sock or the shoe usually. as a long distance Walker I soak my feet in surgical spirit every night 6 weeks before a walk and get zinc oxide take over any part of the foot where I know I've had problems in the past. not had a blister since I've been doing this.

Have a google at different ways to lace trainers. Different lacing methods may help with so many different problems. Plus try soaking your feet in surgical spirits to toughen the skin. (After theyโ€™ve heard of course). Good luck.
