Rest up Claire, the runs will wait for you, and we can safely say there will be many more sunny days to come yippee! Having said that, I do feel your pain - I was supposed to run today but decided to give my body another day of rest after a nasty bug I developed on Monday. As I walked to the station to catch my train to work I could have weeped! So warm and sunny. My Monday run was in snow and biting winds. πŸ™

Take care. x

I have had a few lurgy recurrences lately, something I never got before running and gyming. I run 3 times a week and gym 4 so no days off, which sounds harsh but a 30min run or 90mins in the gym isn't really significant exercise. But as said I do get a few colds that seem to come back for a day or two. I do think the running knocks the immune system back a bit at times and can let the nasties creep back in. I wonder if anyone has any tips to help improve the immune system.. I do take a multi-vit and arnica, do you take anything Claire?

Here's hoping it passes quickly for you though :)

I think that some of the viral infections this winter have been particularly persistent. However, I do wonder whether, as runners, we are so keen to resume our exercise that we don’t allow ourselves to get better properly. I definitely made that mistake in Jan and Feb - I went out when I was β€œon the mend β€œrather than β€œmended β€œ. Not a mistake I will make again! πŸ˜„

PS Echinacea is meant to be good for the immune system too.

I second that.

in reply to Elfe5

I have just read an article on my soon to be ex husbands running magazine & it basically says that when we feel rough its not symptoms but our body's natural immune response to FORCE us to rest so that we can heal & get better so the advice was very much DO NOT RUN when you are poorly as it will likely only make you worse!!!makes sense i guess πŸ€”

Yes, I agree - don’t run until you are better is the way to go. πŸ˜ƒ

Glad to know that. I'm sidelined with a really throat-ripping Strep virus. Worst part nowadays with these things is missing running - but this is a consolation that it is for the best.

Take good care of yourself - mentally for sure. Divorces, even for the healthiest of reasons, are shattering. Wishing you the best in your future.

in reply to Irish-John

Oh goodness me that sounds awful!!!hope you are better soon!!!

Most definately...i am struggling alot with it at the moment mainly because i am still stuck here with him in my house for the time being!!!running helps clear my mind if only for a short while

Glad you are coping and in a healthy way Claire. Keep on running - and leaving your worries at a.n increasing distance mile wise and time wise behind πŸ™‚

Echinacea can be good but as prevention, before you have the lurgy: you need to take it during all "ber" months (says my niece who has a training in naturopathy). However, if some of you can stand essential oils, the one that is the most efficient and has really helped me this winter is Ravintsara oil. I found out about it thanks to my physio one day I was there and coughing my lungs out, and he gave me a great massage using this oil; he only uses oils to cure himself even though he went through traditional western training. Get some organic one and mix a few drops with almond oΓ―l to massage your throat or chest. I also put a few drops on my wrists or just at the base of ear/throat when I feel I have a swollen glad or on my nose if it's blocked.

Vitamin C is also a great booster.

Well done listening to your body. Recover first, then run! It is just a blip, you are a runner! πŸ˜€

Sorry to hear you're battling a bug again. I've been struggling with getting over my bug, just can't shake it. Be kind to yourself, take a rest and the runs will still be there when you're up for it. If the sun is shining, getting out for a nice leisurely stroll for some Vitamin D therapy may be in order β˜€οΈβ˜ΊοΈ

Ah i hope you are feeling better soon too x

Oh no! Hope the lurgy disappears quickly. Do you think that maybe the tough times you have been through lately have given your immune system a knock?

I vote staying in bed with something hot. (TO DRINK. I realise that may have sounded all wrong).

in reply to HeleneCorsa

Haha...that really made me laugh out loud πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ i am sure staying in bed with something HOT would make me feel a whole lot better 😁

You are right though...my immune system has been rubbish for a very long time!!!more than likely due to the stress & upset of the situation i am in which has been ongoing for over 5 years!!!

HeleneCorsa profile image
HeleneCorsaGraduate10 in reply to

Hopefully you will be able to make the transition out of this difficult situation and live less stressfully as time goes by. xx

in reply to HeleneCorsa

I do hope so...the stress will still be there but it will be MY stress & not caused by his presence in MY house!!!

HeleneCorsa profile image
HeleneCorsaGraduate10 in reply to

There will always be stress in life but this sounds like the type you will be able to handle, whereas the other type can be intolerable. Wishing you all the best. xx

Take care of yourself, Claire and great you're listening to your body! Rest, rest, rest to be able to run again soon ;-) Make sure you eat as well (as you've lost a lot of weight, this also weakens your immune system): nice veggie soup full of vitamins...

in reply to Anthie

Will do & thankyou 😊

It's so frustrating as runners when we fall prey to colds and lurgies, but they are all temporary setbacks. Just take care of yourself and ease back gently. Even when we feel OK our bodies are typically still fighting the virus underneath the surface. Keep coming on here and just plan your first run back πŸ™‚

Will do thankyou 😊

It’s depressing when bouts of bugs seem to have it in for you. I just wondered if your reference to β€˜soon to be ex-husband’ might be part of the scenario? Extra stress in our lives can lower our resistance I’m sure - no scientific basis I can quote, just past experience - and leave us vulnerable in every sense. Take extra care of yourself every way you can!

in reply to Nannalyn53

I think you are absolutely 100 % right!!!the situation is killing me at the moment no two ways about it.its just a shame as going for a run helps clear my head a bit too!!!

Too many people these days are getting pneumonia because of the cultural pressure to tough it out and push through colds and flu. A cold is a good excuse to just let it hang all out and indulge yourself for a bit--of course I'm feeling sorry for myself, it is all about me for once and I am going to do exactly as I please until I feel better.

A gentle stroll in the park might be in order--wrap up warm and look at all those poor runners.

in reply to MickGJ

I think so...sadly i have a physical job & self employed so have to carry on working but running going to have to wait for now 😊
