Running with back pain

Question for you all: I have a low back strain - it's not related to an injury from exercise. My twin grandsons were hospitalized this past week and I stayed with them to help their parents and must have not been using very good posture. But suffice it to say that I've had spasms upon getting out of bed, and the area is very sore. I've seen my chiropractor twice and will be going again tomorrow. It is feeling better - no spasms this afternoon or evening. But I REALLY want to go running tomorrow! It's going to be 70 degrees and beautiful! Has anyone dealt with a back problem? How did you do with running with it? Thank you for any advice!

I had a terrible case of sciatica two and a half years ago. I found that walking for ten minutes before running really helped me in the recovery. I also found that religiously following advice from physical therapists was really helpful.

I would check with your chiropractor as they have all the medical details relating to your pain. I hope it heals quickly. .

I think it really depends on your specific condition and circumstances. The reasons for back pain are varied and hence how it is effected by running will vary also. Personally with lower back spasm type problems I find running helps as does nearly all exercise, but that would depend at what stage of the problem you are at. With me I have had a few incidents where my back went into spasm and I could barely walk as my legs would go rubbery, but a day or 2 later I'd be fine to exercise normally.

Get checked out before you run. You could end up in worse pain. We are all different..my Sports Physio said no running..but I had specific exercises to do. My trapped Sciatic nerve...a result of lifting small granddaughter awkwardly!

Hope you heal soon😊

Thank you, Oldfloss. I will do that! It's my 1st "injury" and it isn't even from working out! It feels so much better today!

I had pain, then later I 'knew' the pain was 'a bit serious', then I REALLY knew the pain was 'for real'...then I went running and made a slightly dislocated hip a little bit more dislocated.

Nearly three months no running at all and will most likely have permanent twinge in my hip for the rest of my days...plus, God knows how long it will be before I get over a nagging fear that it will happen again :)

Running is so enjoyable - but do take it easy 'kay? :)

Wishing you many happy miles in your future :)

Gotcha! I'm sorry that you've had so many struggles! I got a green light from the chiro today, but decided to keep it really short today. I walked a mile. Then I just ran a half a mile to test it out. Then walked bit more, and ran the last third of a mile. It felt great! And as long as that lasts until tomorrow, I'm doing a longer run tomorrow! Thank you for your excellent advice! Best of luck to you! Running makes me happy - especially on beautiful days!

Update: i had some soreness yesterday so opted for a 3.35 mile walk with the dog! Best decision ever! I feel less sore after the walk. And no injury! But I look forward to whenever my nezt run will be!
