I’ve bought a ‘cheap’ Garmin Forerunner 30 with my Christmas money, what is happening to me? Apps keep glitching and I can’t stand it anymore. Unfortunately I am such a technophobe, I can be bothered with it all, reading the instructions, blah blah, blllaaaaahhhh. It can’t be that hard to work it out? So I just put it on and go.

Big mistake. Of course, I should have known. It’s meant to buzz / vibrate after a km…. minutes come and go, surely by now? No…. Because…. it’s in miles. So my brain goes into twit mode, can I work out 9k in miles? No. Oh no, it’s all going to go wrong….Calm down. 5 miles is 8k roughly. It’s ok. But it isn’t, so my gremlins tell me, so later on I fiddle with watch running along…. Miles counter changes to heartbeats. Now I don’t have a clue what the hell is happening and I really want to do 9km. The thought of doing 8 again, to get so far but not quite there… well, I can’t have that.

I did 8km in 58 mins last time. But I am really lumbering along today, I feel soon slow and ploddy. So I manage another 17 mins on top of 58 just in case. And I’m thinking about everyone on here, and how you’ve all helped me get here today. And low and behold, when my legs grind to a halt (literally) I haven’t done 9k, I’ve almost done 10.5k.

I really can’t believe it. Anything is possible. But not without you lot :)

Extra bonus, Miserable Fag Lady was in the rec today and she’s got her New Year’s resolutions in order…. Well…. she was still lighting one fag off another, but before she did, she said hello to me - first. Improvements abound everywhere!

I did think it was taking a long time to reach 1k the first time I used mine :) I think I changed it over in the Garmin connect app.

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to pinkaardvark

Yes, I hope that I've managed to sort it out now... after much effing and blinding and the like. It's not very clear on the app, well, not to an idiot like me anyway!! :)

BluebirdrunnerGraduate10

Hooray! By jove she's done it....😄 fancy missing the chance to do the 9k first though fishy😆...

Huge Congratulations to you..its a great acheivement, and one you managed magnificently😊. I think the brain switches off a bit whilst the body is working so hard..its really difficult to try to do maths or think coherently after the first 5k...🏃..

Another successful 10 is the Magic no. Graduate, Ju ju really should be on commission 😉

Well done Fishypieface 😊xxx

FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to Bluebirdrunner

Thanks Jan, as always for all your lovely support. I wish it was magnificent, it was in truth a hard slog. But hopefully it will get easier with time, like c25k. So in about a year or so then!! :)

Juju should definitely get commission, it's nice to have something to follow, that's easy, tried and tested and works! Otherwise I would have been umming and ahhhring for weeks! :) xx

Congratulations on the 10.5k and commiserations on the tech troubles. That did make me laugh, been there, done that! I have learned not to touch Strava once I’ve set it going or it will freak out and throw its hands in the air shouting “You’ve spoilt it all now, I don’t know where we are!” Enjoy a glass of something celebratory today - you’ve earned it 😁

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to Limawhite

Thanks very much! I'm glad it's not just me with the tech! I think I've tried every app going and they all seem to zone out at some point. I couldn't even get Strava to open!! Hopefully the watch will work - once I've been through the idiot guide made just for me!

Thanks Ted! Hope you are sliding off the IC and back into running again with ease :)

I wish, shins are still sore. I’m giving it a couple more days then off to see sports physio 🙄

Got your head around the Garmin yet? 🤪

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to TedG

Sort of! Enough to do what I need it to, but I'm sure there's more, if I could work it properly.... story of my life!! :)

Oh no....fingers crossed they can sort you out and get you back out there soon... and with minimal cost!

Ah, Garmin is not intuitive. I love technology, but Ming the Merciless (GarMing) for short) and I have had a few altercations. There was the time I recorded a whole run as a swim, and the other time when I forgot to set it from run to treadmill, consequently doing a 28 minute run that went nowhere. The only way I can be sure it’s recording correctly is when it buzzes the laps on my wrist. Be sure you have latched onto a satellite before pressing start as well!

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to

Thanks for the heads up on that, didn't even know that about satellites. What ever happened to just getting out there?!! Not without bluetooth earphones, phone strap, then check the weather.... gloves, buffs, windproof jacket? Takes me about 1/2 an hour already to 'kit up' and the watch has just added another 10 mins!!

in reply to Fishypieface

That made me laugh. I feel exactly like that. In my teens I ran in jeans or mini skirt with bare feet or scuffy baseball boots and absolutely no technology. Mind you, I thought I was one hell of a babe and wouldnt have been seen dead in lycra, even if I known what it was. Now it’s shock absorber bra, running top, running leggings, monoskin socks that have to be put on the correct feet, running shoes, knee strapping, running jacket (not forgetting to turn on the little flashing light on the back), buff, armband for phone, running gloves. The watch is the least of my problems, but then its my second .garmin and I wear it all the time.

You will get the hang of the garmin. If you want to know how to do something with it, a quick google will bring you to forums where other people have asked the same questions. It will also learn about you and adjust your results accordingly.

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to

I bet you were one hell of a babe Flick! It's good to know we are all pretty similar with our kit, we could spend 100s and 1000s on it! Good idea to google, I will have a look tonight..... and look up mono skin socks /running jackets with flashing lights whilst I'm at it!! :)

in reply to Fishypieface

Ah, the flashing light. My running jacket is a Ronhill, bought used on ebay, and it has a spacer which you take out and replace with a little light, which flashes at different speeds according to how many presses. Those vizion led running jackets seem to have been phased out - who knows why as they are brilliant.

Ah, the babe days. When I was regularly chucked out of p,aces for arriving in bare feet. Sigh...ah, youth...

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to

Haha! And now it's all monoskin socks and 1498578 different types of running shoe! Hadn't even though of eBay for running gear.... oh well that's my Sunday night up the pictures then! :)

in reply to Fishypieface

Lol, well who needs entertainment when they could be surfing running gear? I know which I would rather do. Addict? Moi?

People CALLED me Sandie Shaw: bare feet, long hair, mini dress halfway up my bottom 😂

10.5k?! Bl**dy hell, Fishy! I am very impressed. You are fab. x

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Thanks :) but not really, it's all down to following Juju's plan. I'm not sure it's something I want to repeat again in a hurry either! 8k is a quite nice though. I might stick around there - about an hour for me, it's all a bit of a slog after that (more than usual!!!). Are you off the IC yet? x

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

You are fab so shush! No harm hanging around the 8k mark for a while - 8k is flipping impressive too. You should be so pleased; so few people can run for an hour! I cannot wait to get back up to speed and do Ju Ju’s plan, but am a fair while off that after all my pigging set backs! But! Inching my way off the IC now thank you for asking, thoughtful FPF. Tried out run one of week 1 to test me pins out this morning, and did it easily. Slight ache in injured thigh, but no pain, and definitely 98% healed. I even think the little bit of running I did helped! Most of all, I felt joyful for getting out again. xxx

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

Fabulous news!! :) So pleased for you, just you wait, in no time you will be back out there doing your thing! Maybe little and often is the way to go. It does feel good getting out there doesn't it? Fingers crossed the next couple of weeks are kind to you and you get some alone time running!! You very much deserve it after waiting so patiently and yet still being so lovely and supportive of the rest of us. Keep us posted and wishing you some wonderful but gentle runs xx

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

Thank you lovely. The plan is to build up slowly and see how it goes. I am quietly confident. Failing that, I had a recommendation for a good running physio, so will go see them if it flares up again. It has kept me wee spirits up to stay close to this lovely forum and read about everyone’s running adventures! Mojo still firmly in place. 😘

HeleneCorsa profile image
HeleneCorsaGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

So glad that things seem to be improving and hope you can get out there more and more as time goes by. It does sound as if building up again with shorter runs is the best policy.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply to HeleneCorsa

Thanks Helene. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now, and I am looking forward to building up again. x

HeleneCorsa profile image
HeleneCorsaGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

8k is a lovely distance though - long enough for robolegs to take hold and to be able to feel smug in the hard work you've done, but not so long that you end up stiff as a board the day after.

That said, I love how you just knocked out 10.5 k "by mistake" - what a rock star! :D

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to HeleneCorsa

Yes, I agree entirely!! Except not a rock star, it was a very laboured, ugly, pig-headed run! The only kind I can manage!! :)

Fabulous well done FPF!10k graduation 👨‍🎓 🏃🏾‍♀️

The metal catch on my new Garmin has set my eczema off so I’m only wearing it during runs. P’d me off no end. 😡

Fag lady must’ve resolved to be friendly in 2018 😬

AnnieW55 profile image
AnnieW55 in reply to

Any chance you could paint clear nail varnish on the catch, or use a small fabric sleeve (bit of neoprene might work - sports glasses holder-on)?

in reply to AnnieW55

What good ideas 💡 it’s been such a long time since I wore a watch so I had forgotten about how to manage. I was just I tk maxx when I saw your post so I am now armed with clear varnish. So thank you very much x

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to

Thanks very much! :) Hope the nail varnish cures your eczema. They glow green at the back.... I'm not convinced that it is healthy, I'll only wear mine for running. All this new-fangled tech frying our brains!! I sound like my mother!

in reply to Fishypieface

Well, I now NEED to know my heart rate 24/7, how many steps I've taken and the calories used (Bloody ridiculous!).

Nothing wrong in sounding like one's mother....happens to us all :)

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to

I know!! I've already googled VO2 max today... Fortunately, I can't be arsed with a lot of things.... and I don't normally wear a watch so I hope I won't be sucked in to it all..... famous last words!! :)

HeleneCorsa profile image
HeleneCorsaGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

I was the same - I love my simple beautiful classic wristwatch. And now it is sitting all lonely on my bedside table, usurped on my wrist by the big black silicon and plastic monstrosity that is my Garmin, which I have so inexplicably fallen in love with.

Bl@@dy hell..!! 10.5k..!! I’m in awe..!! 😵

Very well done my lovely (even if it wasn’t planned).

I think you need to spend your entire day relaxing in a Badedas bath and reading your Garmin instructions 😂

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to HeadInTheClouds

Thanks HITC you are always there being highly supportive and hilariously funny, everything I need! xx

No need to read the instructions now that Decker's kindly found me a clip to watch - double yay! Funny how me being such a lazy cow just made me do more exercise! That'll teach me :)

Really well done FPF! I had a similar issue the first day with my Garmin too. My overall distance marker was set to miles but the individual kms were chiming in. I went too far as well when I started to suspect something was up. I also am not a big fan of written instructions, but there were tons of youtube vids on the watch operation which were really helpful. Most were for the forerunner as I recall. If you haven’t tried it already it may be worth a look.

Decker profile image
Decker in reply to Decker

Here is one for the forerunner 35 which may help a bit: youtu.be/tD7yppqEpUo

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to Decker

Ah thanks Decker, that's really kind of you, I shall have a look now and hopefully manage to retain all the info for when I next go out.... although with my track record, could be a tough one! :)

Decker profile image
Decker in reply to Fishypieface

no problem - I could not find one for the 30 model, but the 35 should be pretty close in features I should think - pictures always work better than words for me :)

Whoohoo Fishy! You are a rockstar! Not only, did you run10.5k, but you got a hello from MFL?!? 2018 is looking good so far!

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

It is looking great! I am chuffed with myself, it was hard work though! Did you manage your 14k this week? - now THAT'S what you call hard work!!

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

I was only able to do 2 runs this week due to work and both were relegated to the treadmill due to ANOTHER extreme cold warning 😡. But I'm pleased to report I managed an 8k and 12k on the dreadmill 😅. Hoping to get a 16k run in next week - please let the weather cooperate 🤞, I NEED to run it outside 🙏. We've just booked a couple snowmobile and ski trips over the next month - it might hamper my training a bit, but I will likely still reach the HM before the end of March

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

Wow, well done you on two counts - 12k on a dreadmill?!!!!! That takes some doing, you must have the discipline of an olympic athlete! I'd be throwing myself overboard by 6k! And secondly HM by Easter - wow. Very inspiring :) Although not enough to make me want to join you in that..... yet!! :) Fingers crossed you get outside and enjoy your trips and with your 16k - much respect :)

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

Nope, just stubborn as a mule 😆. The last half of my run there was lots of cursing and swearing and self talk to get through it. Thankfully nobody was home, they would have thought I went off the deep end, or at least developed Tourette's 😳. I don't think I could've handled the look my 10 year old gives me when he hears me swear either 😲 and if I couldn't verbalize my frustration, I probably would've quit. I'm very thankful for having my own treadmill, as much as I dislike it.

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

Haha! Give it a few years until your son joins in with your swearing!! My chickens have come home to roost - but at least she knows not to do it in public!! Plus she's learnt most of it from her year group (honest).

I am still in awe, that takes some doing, however you got through it!! :)

Brilliant job. Well done you. Many, many years ago my hubbie and I cycled in Ireland. We planned the route for the four days and booked B&Bs in advance. All planned - like previous cycling trips - using a Michelin road map. First day on bikes and we couldn't find our turnings, backwards and forwards we went, thinking we'd missed the turning. Eventually we realised that the Michelin map for Ireland was in miles, not kilometers (all our previous trips had been in France). Our 50km per day itinerary was actually a 50 mile per day itinerary ... and the reason we couldn't find our turning was hadn't gone far enough! If I hadn't felt so miserable, I might have had time to feel stupid :D :D :D

Well done on your inadvertent 10k. I got a fancy watch for my birthday and spent 1 month trying to work it properly. I'm now able to work a couple of functions but hardly using the full potential. Wish they came with a mini training course ie someone to set it up and come running with me to explain

Lol. Happy running.

I think I will be the same! Mine was the most basic and still £100 (being a tight-arse I feel it's a complete rip-off) but some cost £100s and £100s!! I like the idea of that mini training course though... :)
