Hi there and welcome to Week 2 of the New Quest for this month!

How are we all doing? One week into the new year and with Christmas well and truly behind us, we are looking forward to getting our routine back, maybe dropping a pound or two๐Ÿ˜†, and chasing off any January blues. A great start to the year....๐Ÿ˜Š

What the Quest is;

The Quest takes one month . You can join any time, within those weeks.

The main aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

I ask that you will be a Graduate to join the Quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the programme, your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the Quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:-

To run three times a week

To slowly increase distance

To train for a specific race

To add In Stretch and Strength exercises

As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.

Each week, I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.

So if you want to join, all you have to do is put;

I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in and then, I would like to. ..............

Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.

At the end of the Quest, there will be a certificate that you can download to keep.

Wishing you a happy healthy week

Iโ€™ve been on the IC for a week and after joining my local gym, did 3k on the treadmill on Fri, after which I felt burning feeling on the shins just below the knees. Up til now, Iโ€™ve never had shin splints so wouldnโ€™t know how painful they are ๐Ÿค”

I went out for a gentle 4K this morning which went well but still this feeling below the knees ๐Ÿ™„

Maybe Iโ€™m being paranoid but Iโ€™m concerned my body is telling me something!

I think it might be Ted! I see you have been doing the longer runs from Ju Ju's up to 10k plan. If you have not been taking enough rest days in between the long runs and also the shorter runs that fall in between you may have overstretched a little. Running on an injury won't help. Rest will.

I think you have a 10k to do on the 21st Jan. You have already run 8k, so once your pain settles, just do the 4k run a 5k run then the 10k ( on the 21st) I think you will be able to do it.

I haven't any experience of shin splints but others have, so maybe they can advise the best course of action. I believe, 1 Rest from running, 2 elevating the legs and 3 applying ice ( bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel ) is the treatment.

Treading water on my running goals - ie I ran but for 30 minutes in a familiar place - which is better than going under!

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to GoogleMe

Ha, treading water is fine...and the month is still young!๐Ÿ˜Šx

Prior to Fri, I hadnโ€™t run for 5days Jan because of some ankle swelling. Iโ€™m trying to do 4/5 runs a fortnight which I think is OK.....I donโ€™t do silly things like trying to sprint, a common cause of shin splints I believe? ๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™m not really feeling pain as such, it just doesnโ€™t feel right ๐Ÿ™„

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to TedG

How are things Ted, have you been running or still resting?...

TedG profile image
TedGGraduate10 in reply to Bluebirdrunner

Itโ€™s one thing after another Jan ๐Ÿ™„

Iโ€™ve been having ankle problems too, Perineal Tendon soreness, so I decided to go to Up and Running for a gait analysis, second opinion if you like.... I had it done previously at Decathlon and they reckoned I was over pronating slightly so I went for ASICS support shoes. According to Up and Running, a dedicated Running shop, Iโ€™m definitely neutral and stating that my support shoes could be the problem!

I know I havenโ€™t been overdoing it, only running 5x fortnight.

Going back to Decathlon to see what they can do ๐Ÿ™„

Other than that, Iโ€™m OK....Shin Splints not too bad so doing Parkrun on Saturday ๐Ÿ˜Š

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to TedG

I would value the opinion more of Up and Running than Decathlon too.

Good luck getting it all sorted and with Parkrun....

Didn't do well last week (okay, didn't do anything last week), but I've just been out for a run - hooray! Slow, but out there in the sun. That'll do! And I have a gym appointment at 4pm today, which may fulfil the other part of my Quest goals :O

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to Anniemurph

Hooray, nice one Annie, ๐Ÿ˜„...

how is your shoulder now, any better?

Anniemurph profile image
AnniemurphGraduate10 in reply to Bluebirdrunner

It is sort of mediumly-better :D , thank you, Jan! By which I mean that it still gives me trouble but it's nothing like as bad as it was. I haven't been doing my exercises consistently so that's my fault but it is so much better than it was! What about you? Any improvement?

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to Anniemurph

I know what you mean about remembering to do the exercises!

Mine is almost better now, I can drive ( change gear) without any pain and reach behind my back now. Its been a year though๐Ÿ˜...

Exercise is key I think.xx

Actually got my 3 runs in last week (whoop whoop ๐Ÿ‘) and some knee strengthening exercises in. This week will only get 2 runs in so hoping for an 8 and 12k run maybe. Will continue doing some knee exercises and hopefully will get on the elliptical one night.

I have done my physio exercises EVERY day, yay!!!!! Im feeling the benefit now after a month of daily completing them. I still need to continue daily, then Im seeing the physio again next week.

Been out this morning for a sunny 30mins slow and steady tester run. The knees seem ok as yet. Under strict instructions from my physio to run slow, flat, short distances only and on softer ground. So my new trail shoes got a second outing today. I stuck to a fairly flat grassy route.

I feel so pleased........my first run of the new year. Planning the same again hopefully Wednesday but will delay till Thursday if my knees need me to.

I run because I can! Happy running all ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Feeling good completed my 3 runs for Week 1 of the quest:

C25k+Stepping stone with Laura

Fairly relaxed 30 mins listening to the radio

5k run (38 mins) on lovely bright frosty Sunday.

Enjoyed the stepping stone podcast more than I thought I would and my second run was then more even paced. Didn't set out to run 5k on Sunday just felt good and the day was so lovely I just kept going.

Planning to try out the speed podcast tomorrow, have a leisurely 30 min run on Thursday and try out a new route at the weekend.

Good luck everyone with your running goals this week!

I had not been running for a week or maybe more(?). I had my college son home still this past week, but got him off to school again the day before yesterday so I went to the Y. WHAT? NO PARKING SPACES and we have horrible roads and sidewalks here!!! I thought something special was going on, but apparently it's crowded because people have made New Year resolutions and the Y will become more available come February. So I didn't get a run in Saturday but tried again Sunday and got a spot. I went in resolving to run slowly to avoid injury for 30 minutes with C25k+ Stepping Stones, which I did, so I'm back at it. Thank you for having the Quest!

Well done, your peserverance getting a parking spot paid off, and you enjoyed your 30 min run...so you are definitely back๐Ÿ˜Šxx

It's lovely to read how everyone is doing. โ˜บ๐Ÿ‘

I'm going okay.โ˜บ Did my club run last Wednesday, 4.8 miles, complete with hill repeats and fartleks (all new to me!), it was a great learning curve. Saturday I did 7.5 miles (12k) up to Clent, and got given a Garmin for my birthday (after the run, but the best things in life are worth waiting for ๐Ÿ˜‰). So, Monday I took Garmin for it's first 3.3 miles (5k ish), in the dark drizzle, had another go at fartleks, and the data showed I need to work at pacing. This I knew. But now I can maybe work out how. โ˜บ

Hope your birthday weekend was fun Sandy....

A Garmin is a real runners Birthday present !...I hope you enjoy putting it through its paces.๐Ÿ˜†...

Looking forward to hearing how your club run goes tomorrow๐Ÿ˜Šx

Happy belated birthday, Sandy! What a wonderful birthday week of running you've had and the perfect present! Enjoy your Garmin. I have the basic Forerunner 10 and love it. I still take my phone for music and use Runkeeper to track my runs but I like being able to take a quick peek on distance (and pace on the long runs) when needed. Enjoy!

Thanks SaskAlliecat ๐Ÿ˜Š! Loving the watch already, even after just one run. It was a good week for running, and I've no excuse for not having lots more now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Didn't do very well last week ! No core exercises and only one short run due to being away visiting family and staying in different places. BUT did do lots of walking - my new Garmin clocked up over 10k most days. Home now and determined to get back to regular core exercises ๐Ÿ˜Š

Just one run (out of a target of three) last week but the cough's almost gone so I'm pleased i waited before running again.

This week I had my first session with a running club. They were really welcoming and will definitely encourage me to get out there on those dark cold evenings !

Hi. Well I had a good week. I ended up (a bit naughty I know) doing my first 10K ever when I was supposed to do 9K!! I have taken it easy since then doing easy recovery runs. So my aim for the rest of the month is to do a 10K each week with some gentle recovery runs. Hope thatโ€™s what I am supposed to be doing!! Any advice is welcome.

Bluebirdrunner profile image
BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to TkdMum

Wow, Well done TdkMum, thats brilliant, and I don't blame you for going for the 10k if you felt it was there....๐Ÿ˜Š

You qualify for your 10k Graduate badge now too..ask here.

healthunlocked.com/bridgeto...

As far as the way forward goes, your plan sounds good to me, however if you would like advice from our more experienced 10kers maybe a little 'I just ran my first 10k' post would be in order.... lots of people will respond to that.๐Ÿ˜Šxxx

Congratulations to you...
