Any short-sighted folk out there having trouble with eyewear? I wear specs, not contacts, and I can run in them happily as long as it's not raining. When it's wet, I just go without and hope I don't bump into anything, which adds an extra element of excitement/terror to my runs.

However, my prescription sunglasses are too loose to run in so when it's sunny, I end up squinting.

Should I try contacts and then get a pair of non-prescription sports sunglasses, buy prescription sports sunglasses...or just run blind and stay out of the traffic?

Hi there, I'm myopic too, I used an old pair of single vision specs for a while, but now I'm in varifocals that wasn't always ideal πŸ˜‚ , trying to read my barcode at parkrun etc., I use a peaked cap or golfers visor for the sun/rain, works a treat, especially in the rain, and does help to reduce sun glare etc.,

I've been using my varifocals in the sun as they've got photochromic lenses, they seem fine, I've not really had a problem with them being loose. If it's raining I'd go back to the single vision and the peaked cap.

Hope you find something that suits.

Thanks - I tried a peaked cap but it drove me mad, probably because I pinched it from my husband so it was far too big! I like the idea of a golf visor - less chance of a sweaty head! I'll definitely track one of those down (without pinching it off hubby this time). I think the least I need is a pair of not-so-floppy sunglasses but not sure whether to get prescription ones or not.

Yes, I was worried about my head getting too hot, my cap is a real cheapy from Tesco's, thin breathable material too. I did shop around for the visor as many things labelled as 'running' can be pricey, hence looking at the golf stuff......in a discount sports store......

I always have to have my hair off the back of my neck too, a pony tail helps to keep a cap in place.......through the back fastening of a cap.....

It's the first time I've had photochromic lenses, I do like them.

I've never tried the photochromic lenses. I'd definitely consider giving them a go. I just wish my prescription sunglasses fit well enough to stay on my face!

I've always worn contacts and find them brilliant so I'd say at least give them a try. I think a lot of opticians will do a free trial. When it's very sunny I just wear some running sunglasses from decathlon that do the job perfectly and only cost about a fiver.

Thanks - that sounds like a good option. I'm a bit wary of contact lenses but I know a little t of places offer a free trial so it's probably worth a go, even if I only wear them for running/other sport.

If you're wary about taking lenses in and out, don't worry it soon becomes second nature and you won't give it a second thought. There's no need to worry about eye infections etc as long as you don't do anything stupid like not washing hands before handling them, soaking them in tap water or sleeping in lenses not designed for that. Good luck!'

I wear glasses too and in the rain I go without but its all so blurry I have often wondered about contacts ( I have varifocals and I have only had them 2 years so i am a newbie). Take your sunglasses to the optician to be adjusted. I got them to do mine really tight so they stay on!!!

I've already had mine adjusted and they're still rubbish for running. It's my own fault for buying daft enormous sunglasses!

Hi Gabby. I wear varifocals which I've had for a couple of years now but as they were horribly expensive (& I hate it when you get sweaty round the nose!) I wear contacts for outdoorsy stuff. I used to wear contacts all the time but the inherited dry eyes got worse so it's specs now. I'm ok wearing the lenses for short amounts of time 2-3 times a week & don't think it would take you long to get used to them. Even with dry eyes I use soothing eye drops with the lenses & it's fine. Think I need to find a cap after reading these posts. Hope you find a solution which makes you comfortable. x
