Race for Life report

Daughter and I did Race for Life yesterday. Bit of a minor panic in the morning when the box of safety pins wasn't in the place I usually keep it. So husband, off for the Sunday paper, said he'd try the newsagents. He came back with a box, saying 'I thought you'd like the gold ones' - and it was a box of.... paper clips!

Anyway, I had anther hunt round and did find the box of safety pins after that. They also had them at the registration desk at the race!

Getting to the park was easy though there was a queue to park - lots of space. The park was indeed massive - large open green spaces and a wooded section - more of which later.

Daughter hadn't slept well and had driven a lot on Saturday so she decided to do 5k as well - which was lovely as we did it togther. The atmosphere was great, a large crowd all in great spirits. It was quite hot, thankfully not sunny, but overcast & humid.

We started off at a faster pace than I would normally run, carried along by the general enthusiasm. To my surprise, there were 3 hilly sections up into the woodland and back again. I had to walk those, with daughter jogging on the spot saying 'I don't do hills slowly' (I do love her, though).

By the end I was hot, sticky and tired. I did manage a 'sprint' finish, driven on by my daughter.

My time? 37.11 which I'm really pleased with, given the hot weather and the hills. And between us we have so far raised over £400 for Cancer Research UK - our target was £150 so we are super pleased! :)

Thanks Sue, yes it feels so much more than 'just' a 5k run 😄

Super Joy.. what a great post! How lovely to run with your daughter too... their energy is amazing isn't it...?

Funny though, I think they appreciate our efforts too...I know Little Mum, who has just started a bit of running again, is speedy. but she tells me she will be stopped long before me.. I will keep going where she will falter:)

A great time and for a great cause too :) Well done Joy :)

Thanks Floss! I know what you mean - from little things she says I know that my daughter is quite proud of me just starting running a year ago. I watched her do Race for Life about 6 years ago and said 'I'd love to do that one day, but I'd have to walk'. She reminded me of that yesterday! 😃

Well done Joy. Sounds hard with the heat, hills and near panic over the safety pins ☹️

And that's a great amount of money. Big well done to both of you.

Thanks IP. Harder than I thought as I regularly run 5k+ at home. But very worthwhile 😀

Wow, £400? That's a great result, you should be proud! And well done for pushing yourself and getting a very respectable time.

Thanks Tomas. Yes, amazing - from friends, family and work colleagues. I did make the point that I have never done a sponsored challenge before, not even as a Brownie Guide, and I don't think I'll be making a habit of it! 😄 I"ll certainly be entering more races, but it's not fair to ask for money too often 😄

True that. I was collecting for the third time in three years a few months ago, and I did feel quite bad about begging the same people again. And even if it's for increasing distances that we runners think are completely different things, Joceline Public will just see it all as "yet another run? how boring!" :)

I didn't want the hassle of asking for and collecting sponsorship, so I am raiding my husband's CAF account! He wrote the cheque for the Fire Fighters Charity yesterday so it it all ready to take along on the day.

I am doing the Virtual Poppy Run in November. Same process planned for the sponsorship.

Yes, and daughter has already done 2 HMs and a Moonwalk this year, though she didn't ask for sponsorship for one of the HMs. There's a limit to how much you can ask people to part with their money, however worthy the cause.
