I like to read about running, so sometimes buy running magazines, but I wonder if there are running-themed novels that anyone could recommend?

Thank you!

I believe Ronnie O'Sullivan's new bio deals a lot with his love for running,

Or these - mainly non- fiction I guess - running.competitor.com/2015...

Or check out these runners alking about the best nooks - letsrun.com/forum/flat_read...

I've just read Born to Run by Christopher McDougall (I think), which was really good. Lots of food for thought - wish I could run like that! People have also mentioned Run like a Girl as being very good.

No Run intended is really funny 😃Very short kindle read

I love this book. Have you read her follow up book "Run Intended"? A good read but I think not as funny as the first one.

Oh, I didn't realise there was a sequel. I will get that too.

I've downloaded Hannah's book. You're right, she's very funny. A bit obssessed with bodily fluids though...!😳

Interesting! I have not read any actual running novels (although Chris McDougall uses quite a lot of fictionalisation to describe real events he discusses in Born to Run, and I really liked that book) although I just found some by Googling out of curiosity! I shall let you know if I like any of them :)

Yes I like the idea of running fiction, I'm more interested in that than how-to books. I'll check out Chris McDougall - sounds interesting.

I also loved "Born to Run" and "Running like a Girl". Also "Your Pace or Mine?" and I'm currently reading Vassos Alexander's "Don't Stop Me Now" and Jo Pavey's "This Mum Runs". None of these are fiction though.

I do like the idea of novels which feature running though. Great question. I must see what gets suggested here!

I've read a lot of the ones already mentioned but I ordered a book by mistake on Kindle last year called "The End of The World Running Club" and it was about the apocalypse! But it developed into a kind of running novel! Worth a read and very different.

"It's just four times round the village" is good too.

I like the sound of those. Will have a look. Wonder if the apocalypse one is inspired by Zombies, Run!?

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate10 in reply to Cianalas

I don't think so but it's basically about a very unfit man who loses his family after the apocalypse. They are at the other end of the country and in order to get to them before they are whisked away somewhere safer, he has to run! There's not much about running but as runners we can identify with his pain!

Yes, I could definitely identify with the unfit learner runner character.

I read Scott jurek's book about his beginnings in running, his veganism and running ultra's. It's got recipes in it too. I think it's called Eat and Run

Thank you Misswobble. I'm vegetarian, so the vegan bits will be interesting...not a chance the ultra bits will apply to me though 😂

Very interesting post. I have never read a book about running, so looking forward to trying some of these suggestions. Perhaps you should write a novel about your running adventures Oldfloss

Already in the process of being written...and I am also writing a running themed Murder Mystery...😉

Thanks for this thread! Lots of interesting inspiration.

I liked Running Like a Girl, too.

If you like Haruki Murakami, you should try his What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. It is quite amazing.

Thank you! Running Like a Girl has had a few mentions, so must be worth getting. Will check out WITAWITAR as well.

It's not a chuckle but "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" has some very moving descriptions of the emotions running can reveal.

Plus it's an interesting kind of "time warp" read on Britain itself :)
