From Medicine.net regarding edema caused b liver issues:

Peripheral edema, which is usually seen as pitting edema of the legs and feet, also occurs in cirrhosis. (Cancer is also listed in the article as another possible cause.) The edema is a consequence of the hypoalbuminemia and the kidneys retaining salt and water.

The presence or absence of edema in patients with cirrhosis and ascites is an important consideration in the treatment of the ascites. In patients with ascites without edema, diuretics must be given with extra caution. Diuresis (induced increased volume of urine by use of diuretics) that is too aggressive or rapid in these patients can lead to a low blood volume (hypovolemia), which can cause kidney and liver failure. In contrast, when patients who have both edema and ascites undergo diuresis, the edema fluid in the interstitial space serves as somewhat of a buffer against the development of low blood volume. The excess interstitial fluid moves into the blood vessel spaces to rapidly replenish the depleted blood volume.

I know of a CLL patient who was greatly over hydrated as part of his clinical trial. He is using albumin, but also had fluid removed from his abdomen. This should not be considered without talking to your sister's doctor. It sounds like a very low salt diet might also help.

I am a retired elementary school teacher. When I was diagnosed with leukemia 10 years ago (I am currently stable) I decided I was going to learn everything I could about my disease, after getting a run around from doctors for the previous 5 years, and am involved in several on line groups for leukemia and attend conferences for leukemia and lymphoma patients when I can. 5 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and again read everything I could get my hands on. I am also very fortunate to have ended up with really wonderful doctors who explain things in detail and answer all of my questions, no matter how silly they might seem. In addition I was very involved in my mother's care during her last years and learned a lot going to her appointments and looking for answers for her health issues.

I also have been involved with animal rescue for many years and have learned a lot about medical issues dealing with the many health issues my pets have had. I am currently trying to rehabilitate a peacock who adopted my yard and has had some kind of neurological disorder. I'm sure you can all get a little laugh at the idea of me nursing a peacock in my house. Fortunately he has lost his long tail for the winter or he would never fit in the dog crate he is in right now.

I am not very scientifically minded, but have found a coupe of friends who are very good at research and have learned from them, as well as learning the basics of where to look for answers.

Peripheral edema is the type that Batool is talking about with her sister's legs, where the legs swell because of too much fluid building up. Ascites is when the fluid builds up in the abdominal cavity. Cirrhosis is chronic liver disease. Diuresis is the use of a medication to cause the kidneys to put out more urine to reduce the build up of fluid, either in the abdominal area or in the legs (or other areas of the body). Albumin is a protein found in the blood - also in some foods like eggs and milk. I don't know how it helps with the issue of edema, but know that an on line friend was being given extra albumin to try to bring down his fluid build up, caused when his doctors gave him more IV fluids than his body could handle, so when I saw it mentioned here, I knew that it is in fact used.

Salt is known to increase fluid retention in the body. That is why many people are put on a low sodium (salt) diet. I have been for edema caused by a heart valve issue (not serious) and the fact that my leukemia affects my kidneys. One thing many doctors are pushing for these days is for everyone to use less salt in their diet.

I hope that helps you to understand what the clip is saying. If you have questions about any of this please ask. If I can't answer them I'm sure the doctor can. My rule when I was teaching was that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask and if you ask everyone will learn from the answer. I also told my students from day one that I didn't have all of the answers, but I would help them look until we found someone who could answer their question.

A long time ago I decided that I was never going to understand all of the very technical information in the reports that my friends post, or that is sometimes presented at conferences. I do my best to understand the basics, and am thankful that I have friends and doctors who will explain anything very technical that might be important to my situation. I was making myself crazy, at first, trying to understand very complicated things that would never apply to me. My online groups have been incredibly valuable to me as far as educating myself. I have a fairly good understanding of edema because it is something I deal with myself, though not because of cancer.

TMI (too much information) I'm sure for your question. I know that this forum and the doctor will help all of you become more comfortable with the medical information that is important to your particular situations.
