Lumpectomy

Hi I’m due to have a wire guided lumpectomy with lymph node removal on the 6th February it’s a day case. How long was your recovery after this operation as a very good friend of my husband and I has sadly passed away we have known him for over 35 years and his funeral is on the 7th so I am hoping that I will be ok

Hi Lyngal, condolences on the loss of your friend. As regards recovery time after your surgery I'd say we're all different, I had lumpectomies and complete node clearance in, had to stay in hospital overnight as I live on my own, 2 days after surgery my sister, who was looking after me, had to take me to GP as I'd developed cellulitis in the arm where nodes had been cleared, at the moment my advice would be get the surgery competed and see how you feel on the day of the funeral, thinking of you, good luck xxx

Dear Lyngal, I had exactly the same op as you, the day after I was still spaced out from the general anaesthetic, very tired and sore....I certainly wouldn't have been able to get dressed and attend a funeral...yes it may be a day op but your body will have gone through a major trauma, surgery and a general anaesthetic take a longer recovery period..

Hi I had the same op in may last year, I was pretty much ok and came out the same day the only problem was the drain I had to have for 5 days after, I was up about and dressed the next day x

Hello Lyngal,

So much depends on how you feel on the day. Everyone is different. You already have so much to think about with your op on 6 February and that preparation takes a lot of mental and physical energy not to mention the recovery afterwards. Just because it is a day case, it doesn’t meant it is a minor operation.

Please listen to your body and when it whispers “stop, look after me” you need to listen. Also, listen to that voice in your head which may say, “ I need to stay home as I am not feeling well emotionally”.

I would prepare to attend the funeral on 7th Feb so sort your clothes out and do whatever else you need to do to prepare, but on the day the only person who is important is you so please look after yourself.

If you don’t attend the funeral, say a prayer for your friend, maybe send a text to the family, write a letter. You can pay your respects without physically being there. People will understand.

It took a few weeks. I had drains. Didn’t take anything for pain except for alieve. I hope all goes well for you. I’m sorry for your loss of your friend. Keep your head held high. I will be praying for you. It seemed like a long lonely journey for me through chemo and radiation. I read my bible daily and leaned on God.
