Hair falling out

Today after writing my introduction I ran my fingers through the hair at the back of my head, the crown really, and my hand came away with long strands of hair. No matter how prepared you think you are for this day, you aren’t.

Exactly 2 weeks after commencing chemo, I lost a few hairs. 2 days later, I was in the shower, running my hands over my head to remove excess water from my hair and it literally fell out! I now know what it means for your hair to fall out! It was in a pile on the shower floor. I thought it would come out bit by bit, so was also unprepared. I went to my hairdresser and had a number 1 length shave/cut. There are so many different styles and colours of headgear, I have enjoyed mixing and matching to suit clothing. I also had a wig fitted pre-chemo, but haven’t worn it much.

Enjoy colour coordinating your bandanas, hats & scarves. It can be fun 😊

Yeah I just could not do a wig, I had visions of me shopping having a hot flush & the wig ending up in shopping trolley lol 😘

I had the cold cap and all my long hair cut of but still lost a bit. I didn't really notice till a friend said one day that my eyelashes and eyebrows had gone. My hair has grown back thick and long again and body hair very gradually. I now eight years post diagnosis. Good luck in your journey. 👍😂

True that. It wait because it will be so freeing! And easy morning routine. This is one more leaf of the BC tree. I went bald and now I can’t believe I did but I’m a year from chemo and I have plenty of hair. It’s not back to shoulder length yet. And I hate shaving my legs again... oh and mine came back gray. I color it now.

So, on Friday morning a few strand of hair by nighttime it was more like clumps of hair and the stuff gets everywhere. Then my scalp started itching and burning and felt generally sore. I never fell asleep. Around 5 am I took a shower with Green People Aloe shampoo. Huge amounts of hair ended up at my feet. I had an appt with my therapist on Sat. So I rummaged through drawers looking for hair scissors. I just snipped a way at it myself. Most people said my little pixie cut looked cute. Sadly, it didn’t last. I had to order hair clippers. My husband gave me a number 2 shave last night. It was harder to handle than I thought it would be. Still experimenting with headwear that doesn’t scream CHEMO PATIENT :)

Thank you, everyone. Your support and your stories really help!

I was shocked that my hair loss didn't really bother me. The eyebrows are what made me nuts. I don't know why because you hardly see them with my glasses. I did get a free wig but never felt comfortable in it. Wore it maybe two times and decided hats and scarves were better for me. I am almost two years post chemo and still have some thin spots on the upper part of my head. I actually miss the low maintenance of no hair. Not enough to shave it off. It will come back eventually. In the overall scheme of things, it's just hair. Compared to most of what we will deal with it's not as bad as we think. I wish you well.
