Coiling a brain aneurysm

Could anyone please tell me how successful coiling is for a brain aneurysm. Many thanks

From my perspective- very successful, I've had two coiling procedures, one on a ruptured aneurysm, following the emergency 'draining' procedure, in February 2015, and a second coiling procedure on an 'incidental' aneurysm they noted at the time, which was carried out in March of this year. There's a third one in there, that is too small, and awkwardly-positioned to be viable for coiling, so there'll be on-going monitoring, and a decision on any surgery made IF it enlarges...

The second procedure was very straightforward, because I knew what was happening, the first one was traumatic, waking up in a strange place, with nurses asking me where I was every hour or so... I hadn't been told where I was while I was lucid, so that was a bit of a testing time for me. For the second procedure, I had two Ibuprofen in the recovery bay, and then two paracetamol on the 'Neuro-critical' ward, to help me sleep through the lights, and the beepy-monitors, and the nurses having to do the GCS test on me, and five other patients... It was OK, because I knew what was happening.

I was discharged after 24 hours monitoring, a month on Aspirin, to reduce the risk of clotting, and I was back at work 10 days after the surgery. (I'd scheduled the surgery during a school holiday, so I didn't have to take time off.)

Hi mikes 123.I had my operation on the 6th September last year, I had six coils put in. The operation went well the problems I have are because it took doctors so long to realise it was a aneurysm l had and it had got so big and was pressing on my 3rd nerve.

It's nearly 4 years since I had 18 coils in an unruptured giant aneurysm. I had no problems until recently. I've had an mri scan to check things are ok in there and they are. Now due to see the eye doctor to find out what is causing problems with my right eye. Neurologists say it is nothing to do with my brain.

Your aneurysm must of been very very big indeed. Good to hear no problems hoping they find out the problem with your eye. Do you think that those coils will last forever.

I had a ruptured aneurysm coiled 13 years ago. Went well but at some stage afterwards there was damage to the 3rd cranial nerve and as a result I have a droopy eyelid and vertical squint.

Hi Cleo.

That's very interesting as it sounds similar to my symptoms. My right turns upward and outward and my eyelid droops. Do you have any idea what caused the damage? Seems strange that this happens years after the surgery.

The doctors don't really know but say they think the coil was pressing on the nerve and caused damage. It seemed to happen a few years after coiling - similar to you? What are you being told?

That's exactly what I thought had happened but I've recently had an mri scan and it looks identical to the one I had just after the op. My neurologist has now referred me by to the eye specialist, I have an appointment next week so I'll let you know it goes.

Thanks I will be very interested. I was told that the nerve is like a thread and damage to it would not show up on scan. My coil was also checked and was also stable. Neither neurologist nor eye specialist seemed to have ever encountered the issue before and were quite fascinated in my sqonky eye!

I first went to the eye specialist. It was him that referred me back to neurology. Neurologist did tests, said its nothing to do with the brain, it must be a problem with my eye hence being sent back to eye clinic. Basically back where I started lol. Do you have Facebook at all?
