Found out I have a bicornuate uterus! Can anyone help me?

I have just discovered after an internal scan that I have a bicornuate uterus.

The early pregnancy unit where surprised that this was never mentioned to me before as I have a 4 year old.

They said that this could make labour very difficult for me which in turn I did have a 26 hour labour that almost shook the life out of me but I'm wondering if anyone has heard of "bicornuate uterus."

I am yet to discuss this with my doctor and see a specialist gynecologist but I am very much freaked out after reading about it on line, I did not know much about what it meant so I just had to look but there are no causes mentioned online. I am wondering if this was ever discovered with my first child and if so why was it never mentioned or did they miss it? or if this is something that developed in time?

I remember being in labour and the midwives trainees where there to help me through the process once I gave birth the sister midwife had to resuscitate my uterus as they could not contract it, they where able to in the end, wondering if this may have caused my uterus to now be of a heart shape ( bicornuate uterus)

If there is anyone who has this or knows about it I would love to know more or maybe share you experience.

Thanks in advance x

Hi There,

A bicornuate uterus means a heart-shaped uterus. Usually the uterus would be pear-shaped. Women with a bicornuate womb have no extra difficulties with conception or in early pregnancy, but there is a slightly higher risk of miscarriage and preterm birth. I know it's hard but try not to worry too much before you are seen by the gynae team. If you have a look at this link from Tommy's, there are different variations, once they know what yours looks like, they can manage a pregnancy better, and possibly plan a C-section. tommys.org/pregnancy-inform... . I hope all goes well.

Best Wishes

Jules

Hi Lilanxious,

I have just been told the same: that my uterus is bicornuate. I was really panicked as I am also expecting a diagnosis of endometriosis, so it's a party all around here! lol... Hopefully you will be able to get pregnant and carry your baby successfully :) Keep me posted on how you get on
