Contraception for 15 year old

Hi does anyone have any advice about what contraception might be best for my daughter? She's 15, it would be her first time using contraception, and I want something reliable but that won't give her bad side effects like weight gain! I want to make an appointment for next week for her. Thanks all x

Hi , one of my girlfriends is in a similar situation, my girls are not at that age yet, and she went with her daughter to get the pill to start off with. Her daughter was really worried about weight gain, mainly on her boobs, and the doctor suggested that if she does gain weight she should use a larc. I hope that helps! x

Hi I found that the hormones in the pill made me gain weight so my doctor suggested I try the coil though I'm not sure if that would be a bit much for your daughter given that she's so young. But everyone is different and I've had friends who've been fine with the pill., no weight, no spots, not moody or anything. I guess some of us are just unlucky :-( ha ha x

Hi there- really good idea to get your daughter onto contraception early doors. My daughter got into a relationship last year and I told her to start with a proper method of contraception and she has been on the pill since and hasn't gained any weight. But I agree with CaraCee it can be totally different for everyone so I'd say the best bet would be to just give one method ago and see how she finds it. Good luck! x

Thank you all! Bumble do you ever worry about your daughter forgetting to take her pill? That's my big worry. She has a bit of a sieve for a brain, and I don't know if I can make sure she takes it every day. X

Hi Manxmarie- yes there was that concern at first but I told her to set an alarm on her phone ( as she is permanently attached to it!!) so that it will remind her. At first I would check in to see if she had taken it, but with her being a couple of years older than your daughter I felt it was important for her to be slightly independent. Have you spoken with her about the possibility of using a larc instead if she is forgetful? x

What about one of those pill trays?! Sounds silly but it helps me remember my tablets and vitamins every day x

Helloo! So the appointment is for Friday and I am umming and ahhing about it a bit.

I don't think she would like a pill tray as her Granny has one!

I’ve never consider a coil myself and I think she would be too squeamish for that. But I have been googling around other options and I think she needs to have a think about the other options and not just the pill. Maybe this could just be an appointment to have a chat about it with the nurse and then she can go back when she’s had a proper think. But I do want her to get it sorted sooner rather than later!! x

I completely understand your view & I personally think you've made the right choice by letting your daughter have a chat with the nurse / G.P 1st as she's most likely going to take the advise from the nurse much better.

Thanks Abeena xx I can do all the research but at the end of the day it's her decision and it's probably better if she talks to someone else about it - you are so right she will listen to their advice much more than she will from me! She's a sensible. Girl and when she's got all the information she can make the decision for herself. Eeek it's scarey though! Xx

I think you are right to encourage her to make her own choices; she is more likely to stick with it if it is her decision. I hope it goes well on Friday. x

Hiya, I too have a 15yr old, she is very forgetful with her pill (which she uses for very painful periods) she is using the alarm on her phone and the Bayer pill app for I phones that do seem to be working! She also hasn't put weight on, but this can be so individual, always go back and talk to contraceptive nurses/GP as there are many pills with different hormone combinations and give it at least 3 months to see how she settles with it. Great she has a mum that supports her! x

if she is forgetful couldnt she have the injection it last 12 weeks and she would get it every 3 months so no need to worry about for getting

I would say implant last 3 years so would only get it changed every 3 yers and not have to worry about forgetting
