Hi, I’ve taken Amitriptyline for pain, it does help with sleeping but be aware can cause drowsiness . This is especially relevant if you need to get up in the night & can lead to falls. As for pain relief , I didn’t find it helps, I think you need to take it in a larger dose I only took 20mg & this made me sleepy. When I had a medication review by the pharmacist she advised me to stop as I’m over 70 & she was concerned about falls due to me having osteoporosis. I’ve never had a fall but followed her advice as it didn’t help with pain & I was fed up with the “hangover” effect the next day.

Hope this helps , we’re all different so may be different for you.

I was given this. It didn't help at all with pain. All it did was make my blood pressure drop very low that I was dizzy and light headed.

Hi I take Amitriptypline 10mg. It does leave a hangover effect, I take it early evening. It does help me sleep, but can’t say it has ever helped with the pain.

I take 10mg at night and find it helps with pain and with sleeping. I’ve had no problems with it, no hangover effect, and on the odd occasion I’ve run out I really notice the difference. Worth trying to see if it helps?

it is meant for neuropathic pain. I was prescribed it for awful sciatic pain in my leg and it worked, but had no effect on the back pain I had related to fractures (so not neuropathic). It made me dozy and depressed so I was glad to stop taking it when the pain improved.

Thanks Valerie i was prescribed it for back pain, from the replys here it does not look like it helps that much.

well it does if the pain is nerve related but the side effects can be a bit grim

I was prescribed it for Fibromyalgia. I started with 10mg and told to increase by 10mg a week. I managed to get up to 30mg but had to gradually go back down to 10mg as it affects my speech. I’ve never heard of it being prescribed for Osteoporosis. As has been said it’s meant to help neuropathic pain.

Hi, I have sjogrens and the pain in my hands and feet at night really derailed sleep. My GP prescribed 10mgs amitriptyline. I take it 2 hours before bed and it settles down the neuropathy enough for me to sleep. I have never had a problem with it during the 10+ years I have been on it.

Hi I was prescribed it for nerve pain, my hands and feet were like very bad pins and needles at night and it was really disturbing my sleep, my GP thinks it's peripheral neuralgia. I take 20mg about 9pm and the tingling has mostly stopped. I do wake up feeling hungover some mornings and I have to be careful getting up during the night as I feel woozy and the stairs are right outside my bedroom door but at the moment I feel the benefits more than the side effects. Taking amytriptiline for around 4 years for neuropathic pain, for me this medicine was a life saver. It's the only thing that stopped the pain and bring my life back. I take 10 mg around 8 pm and I alway fall sleep (even if I don't want to) around 11pm.

Side effects = dry mouth and eyes when I wake up.

Hi,

I have a chronic neck condition I have had for 3 years due to early degeneration and disc bulges in my cervical spine. I have tried so many medications for pain releif as the pain is pretty terrible. I was on Amytrip. (10mg) and never did anything so didn't think much of it. I saw a really good neurologist and he said for any debilitating pain like I have you need to be on more like 60-80 (depending on tolerance threshold as it makes you drowsy). I increased the dose 10mg every 2 weeks and noticed a big difference when I reach 50mg. Neurologist said both Amitrip. and also Gabapentin work well together. If 70mg of Amitrip. doesn't do the job you can use Gab. alongside it.

Give Amitrip. time and also if it does nothing increase dose until at least 60mg before you conclude it doesn't do anything is my advice. I have colleague at work that had awful migraines and they disappeared (she is on 75mg/day).

hello unluckyalf

I’ve been on amitriptyline for years 25mg x2 an hour before I go to sleep

This sorts my neck pain and I’m also getting a sleep now both of which I struggle to do without them

You need to give them a few weeks to start working but do not just stop taking them suddenly as that will cause some side effects

Tried physio, acupuncture but they didn’t work for me

Good luck with them and all the best 👍
