I am a very active 69 year old with many health issues. I joined this site when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis as I was in a panic caused by my doctor when I refused fosomax. When I told him I had found supplements that I wanted to try he basically tried to make me feel like an idiot, however it didn’t work. I began loosing respect for this young doctor immediately. I offered him info to read and he refused. I have been on AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost for maybe 2 years or more and even though I have not been back for a scan to see if there has been improvement, I feel great and stronger than I did 15 years ago. I have scoliosis, thyroid problems( the medication I take is known for causing bone loss) and chronic dry eyes, oh, and arthritis, but I refuse to give up on my life and encourage all of you to keep searching. I am not online that much, but wanted to share some very special sites with you and wish you good health and happiness in your lives.

For backcare: mysacredspine.com. I have done the home practice for scoliosis, but I have also done some of the things they offer in the back care class. They offer both and this course has been a blessing to me. Individual consults are also offered. Rachel Jesien and her assistant Judy are so knowledgeable and are teaching people worldwide .

OsteoPilates.com. Karena Thek offers so much info on the spine and has courses as well as free online classes on Thursdays for scoliopilates. Karena also is teaching people worldwide and offers individual consults through Zoom or will find someone in your area who has trained under her

I must run, but I just had to share that with you.

There are wonderful people out there in this world who want to help us. I hope you find the right one for you! By the way, I am still hitting tennis balls with my dog, kayaking, paddle boarding, walking, occasionally golfing, gardening, pushing the lawn mower, playing in the ocean with my grandkids and refuse to give up! Every day is a blessing. Yes, I have bad days, but thankfully have movements that help and lot more knowledge of my body. Keep moving in the best way for you and don’t stop and never give up!

Thanks for sharing such a positive outlook! With such an active lifestyle, I'm sure you're doing everything possible to maintain bone health, and well done for not being cowed by your doctor. Just one point though, regarding strontium. Strontium citrate is thought to act in the same way as the prescription drug, strontium ranelate, so will more than likely improve bone density and reduce fracture risk. However, given that it's the strontium itself in strontium ranelate that has been shown to aggravate existing heart issues, it's highly probable that the same strontium in the citrate form could carry the same risk. If you don't have any existing heart issues, that shouldn't be a problem, but you need to be aware that it can also raise blood pressure, so it's important to monitor this. I'm not against strontium citrate as I take it myself, but wanted to make sure you're aware of the potential risks.

Hello there. Your news is really great to hear, especially for folk like myself who have just been knocked back by the shock of recent Dexa scan results. I too have worked hard to keep fit and well despite various chronic conditions, including controlled epilepsy which also nécessitâtes taking tablets that are widely known to cause osteoporosis.My only query is, does not having any further Dexa scans help with the osteoporosis diagnosis? I feel fine. I keep active, although due to my other conditions, I have my limits. However, I have got osteoporosis and I have read up on what this disease does and that people can end up getting spine fractures through simply coughing.

Please someone tell me if not having Dexa bone scans and living a healthy active lifestyle with the right diet and supplements actually is the answer. I have been doing this religiously for the past two years since my previous Dexa scan and yesterday’s Dexa results show a big deterioration in my spine T score which has knocked me for six!

But do I just stop having any future monitoring Dexa scans and try to continue to live a healthy life? This is my question.

I am not going to bother with any more DEXA scans.

I had a REMS scan after a muddled, uninformative DEXA scan report in 2021. I shall however continue with having a REMS every two years. I had one in 2021 after receiving the last DEXA report and will book another REMS in 2023. I feel good about the decision I have made and am more than happy to pay for a REMS every two years. I was told to continue doing what I was doing regarding exercise, diet, supplements etc and hope this will be the case after my REMS in 2023.

I don't think anyone can make that decision for you, because it depends so much on how you view risk. I have a question about your latest DEXA scan though. You say there was a huge deterioration in your spine score, but what about your hip score, and what are you latest and previous scores for both? I've had 2 DEXA scans and probably won't have any more, but have since paid for a couple of REMS scans, as mentioned by Kaarina below. My last DEXA scan gave scores of -3.6 spine (changed from -3.2) and -2.5 hip (changed from -2.3), but my REMS scan 15 months later gave a score of -2.6 for both spine and hip. I trust REMS because it's less open to error, due being more fully automated, and it's been approved for diagnostic use in both Italy and the USA. There are many who believe that a difference of 1.0 between hip and spine scores suggests the likelihood of an error having been made in one or both measurements.
