Hello everyone, not posted for a while but have been reading your posts as they have come up. Can I ask have any of you suffered from back pain with osteoporosis. Not on any treatment yet except calci d from my gp and hrt that I don't really like to take.

I have also broke my toe for the second time in 6 months, is this common x

I have also had back pain or rather pelvis pain for 4 days now. Any help would be appreciated thanks x

Sitporry about you ur broken toes. I’ve never done that but stubbing a toe is bad enough. Yes, I get lower back pain , I’ve always put it down to being a bit overweight and it only happens if I haven’t been taking as much exercise as normal, once I get up to speed with the exercise then it goes. I didn’t think it was anything to do with my osteoporosis but when I was asked about back pain by the fracture liaison nurse and mentioned it - she wrote it down so It looks like it might be to do with the osteoporosis.

Have you had a DEXA scan and if so what were your scores? That should give you an idea of how things are.

Yes I did have a dexa scan in January. My diagnosis was osteoporosis of hip and pelvis. I dont know what you mean by score..though there was a 7. Something number on my record x

This link tells you all about results and scores. There is so much good information on theROS website that it is well worth checking it out. It tells you all about the different treatments on offer and gives good advice on how to boost your calcium and vitamin D intakes.

When I got my DEXA results I had three different numbers think they were for neck of femur, spine and hips. One result was only 2,1 but the rest unfortunately were high enough to be indicative of osteoporosis 🙁

Osteoporosis is often referred to as a "silent disease" because you don't get any symptoms unless/until you fracture. The only way it causes pain is from fractures, but there are many other causes of pain that are unrelated to osteoporosis. For example, I slipped a disc more than 20 years ago and have had back pain on and off ever since. Arthritis is also a common cause of pain. Broken toes aren't necessarily a sign of osteoporosis either, as apparently it's very easy to break a baby toe, regardless of whether you have osteoporosis. I broke mine some years ago from colliding with a door frame! I asked about osteoporosis at the time but they were insistent it wasn't a relevant fracture. It would be worth asking for a copy of your DEXA scan results, then if you're happy to share them here, I'm sure people would be able to help you make sense of them.

Thank you for your reply...I broke the middle toe and 6 months ago the two last ones so little and one next to it. So 3 toes on same foot....I am ok though pain is gone from the toes but my back is still painful. I know I have arthritis ...this pain is different though. I cant stand up straight when I stand up and sat on the loo earlier I heard an felt a crack. I just said touch I felt that. I know I will be told to rest up but move about also, take paracetamol and use a lavender bag which I am doing...it will ease up if it's just inflammation due to arthritis...thanks again.

Hi

Osteoporosis itself does not cause back pain.

Pain from Osteoporosis is caused by fractures this is Acute pain.

For some people (myself included) pain can and does continue after fractures this Chronic pain is usually as a result of the change in the shape of the spine. The ligaments and muscles become strained because of having to work differently to accomadate the changes.

I also have Osteoarthritis of the spine which adds to the pain.

I doubt your osteporosis is the cause of the fractures in your toe.

It is possible the pain you are referring to has been brought on by walking differently as a result of your toe injury.

Perhaps you may have been taking weight on your other leg to take the weight off your injured toe.

Hope your pain begins to ease soon.

Hi Alley. Can I ask which toes you have broken? The reason I ask is I fractured my second metatarsal and the doctor said it was because I had walked too far with flip flops on. Also I take Adcal daily but also alendronic acid. The comment about walking differently whilst having a toe fracture is true because you automatically walk differently in order to relieve pressure on the fracture. This change in gait can cause problems with both your back and and the tibia on the opposite leg to the fracture because of the extra weight you transfer to it. I hope that description makes sense. After my fracture healed I went to physio who gave me back and leg exercises. I was told to stop wearing flip flops and I also wear orthotic insoles. This may be completely unrelated to your problems but I thought the info may help if it bears any resemblance.

Hi 6 months ago I broke my little and the toe next to it. The break literally snapped where the toes and foot join together. Then a couple of weeks ago I broke the middle toe on the same foot again at the very base....I only caught it on my bed.

It sounds like you have a few problems here which deserve further investigation. I would push your doctor for more X-rays. Hope it eases soon.

Thank you. I rang gp today and the only medication that they will give me for osteoporosis is alandronic acid...now I don't want that..I have serious autoimmune liver conditions so any surgery for fractures which alandronic acid cause will be extra difficult. Plus because of the liver I am unable to take pain meds except paracetamol. I might try forteo, but still need a lot more research.

I didn't have a fracture (unless I had a silent fracture. As the doctor didn't refer me for an x-ray so I don't know whether I have ) when I was diagnosed with op. The only indication I had was that I had lost height. I do think that it should be a mandatory procedure that when you have a dexa scan that shows you have low bne density and you have lost height you should also have an x-ray. It seems that so many with op have back problems because they have had a silent fracture and the cause isn't looked into thoroughly.

BTW Do you know why you broke your toe twice? and was it the same toe? I think that when you break your foot your alignment goes out of sync because you can't put any pressure on the broken foot.

Hi Alley27. I have Osteoporosis diagnosed about 18 Months ago. Sept 2017 1st spine fracture T7...2nd Spine fracture December 2018 T5. 3rd Spine Fracture February 2020. I can't take Adcal as it gave me hypercalceamia (too much calcium extreme thirst and extreme urination). I take Vit D supplements no Calcium.

I won't take Alendronic Acid because after taking only 1 whilst in Hospital 1st time 2017 My right arm and hand swelled up double and went partially blue. I do have allergies so no doubt something in it gave me a bad reaction.

They want me to have 6 Monthly Prolia (Denusab) injections but NO WAY. I know of so many people who have had bad adverse reactions including femur fractures, tooth loss etc etc....

I have frequent lower back pain, but, I have degenerative discs in lumbar L4/5/6/7 and S2 so that's was causes mine.

I also have neck and cervical aches due to degenerative discs C4,5,6,7...possibly more by now as ONLY MRI Scan shows them up X rays don't show them...I've had enough to know.

Ask your GP for a Full MRI Scan:- Cervical, Thoracic Lumbar...That's the only way I know of that will show the cause of your lower back ache/pain. Take care and hope you feel better soon xx

P.S. Alley, Osteoporosis won't cause back pain unless you have a fracture but degenerative discs etc sure will x
