Can you have a dexa scan privately, if so, is there anywhere in the North west of England and what is the average cost.

Offered at pallmallmedical.co.uk, offices in Manchester, Newton Le Willows, Liverpool. Cost £200. I found this on a google search so can't recommend it. You may find other providers if you do a search.

I Rang a private hospital ,the cost was £190 but told to go to doctor to be referred, the doctor filled in all admin required and request sent, I didn’t hear anything for a while so rang hospital and was told I would be called up very soon. This is in the East Midlands.

If you are going on holiday, think about having a DEXA scan abroad! Staying with a friend in Italy, she told me she was going for one - did I want one too? It would cost £50 ! I have found European hospitals often provide state-of-the-art care at a lower price than private care in UK.

There's a Bupa hospital in Stoke on Trent, but I don't know how much it costs.

I've just had one NHS and the nurse was able to give me results straight away.

Good luck, hope this helps

It is worth remembering that if you have a DEXA scan privately and have another DEXA scan in a couple of years or so, on the nhs you can only compare the reports if you have been tested on the same device. Perhaps you can use this link to find out more about prices etc. privatehealth.co.uk/conditi...

You could ask about paying to have it done at your local NHS hospital. That way it would be on the same machine as your NHS scan.

Our local NHS hospital Professor of Rheumatology was offering private scans at £75 so I went with that. Very fancy new machine only took around 2 minutes, obviously trying to recuperate costs, but very thankful for it.

What sort of machine did he use and what did he scan? Did you get t-scores just the same?

I don’t remember the machine type but it was new. I did get T scores which were slightly worse than 2 years ago but that was done on different machine then.

Interesting. The only machines I've heard of that give t-scores are the DEXA machine (using x-rays) and the EchoS machine (new technology using ultrasound, only available privately - you'd know if it was ultrasound because they have to spread some gel on the areas being scanned). Both take longer than 2 minutes - I think EchoS is about 10 minutes, DEXA seems to be 10-20 minutes. What part of the country are you in?

Defo no gel. But it only took around four minutes. I am in Bristol.

I'm intrigued! Did he scan your hip and spine?
