What after Forteo??

I am new here. I just finished forteo, and don't want to do the Prolia shots or Fosamax pills. Too scary, read about too many awful side effects esp with the prolia. I have a Rx supplement Fosteum which is calcium, vit D, K2, and genestein. I didnt' really gain any bone on forteo, just stayed the same. I am willing to try the supplement for a year and get another DEXA scan. I am 65 and very thin. Scared about how will my bones last another 20 yrs or so??? I don't think the osteo drugs are the answer. Has anyone finished 2 yrs of forteo and not done another drug, and did you lose bone quickly after the forteo? I'm in a quandary, should i take another drug or try the Rx supplement................thanks............

I would suggest you join some of the Facebook groups that are very active with different people's horror stories, as well as the well known Dr. Lani Simpson, who wrote the book

Dr. Lani's No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide: The Truth About Density Testing, Osteoporosis Drugs, and Building Bone Quality at Any Age. There are MANY stories similar to yours.

Hi, purpleraindlk: I am 70 years old and won't take any of those awful bone meds. I had my doctor put me on HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Haven't been on it long (6 months), but we're hoping they will help my bones as I have osteoporosis, too. Please don't let your doctor talk you into doing any of these awful bone drugs. If the HRT doesn't work on my bones..I'd rather just take my chances. I read an article that said that 85% of people that have osteoporosis don't ever have fractures anyway..so I choose to believe that!

I can't do HRT due to a liver situation. Trying a natural RX that has calcium, MK7 K2, genistein, and zinc. I too think the drugs are bad news and also don't show results that are very helpful. Not worth the risk is my opinion................. I may also order a collagen supplement.

I think that we should be balanced in our views. Drs are not out to harm us. Be informed. I am taking Alendronic Acid (Fosamax) as well as supplements. I have a personal trainer who is putting me through my exercise paces and has also got me to manage stress and sleep habits. Nutrition is pretty good. In the U.K. we have a helpline from our National Osteoporosis Society. Do you have access to anything similar? Good luck.

Do the UK Drs. limit the time on Fosamax? Here they are saying no more than 5 yrs. due to the femur fracture problem, my mom had the femur frac after many years on Fosamax and I sure wouldn't want to go thru what she did. I think most Drs. just go with the standard accepted treatment no matter what. Those drugs do make bones hard and brittle and stop normal bone turnover. That scares me, as well as side effects. Such a dilemma. My allergy shot nurse knew someone who lost most their teeth while on Fosamax. It's so odd how some people do fine on it, and others have awful problems. Obviously you are doing OK on it so continued good luck with it! If I lose a lot of bone in the next year I might consider.............. but would be very leery. I keep hoping the researchers will come up with something better that does not carry such risks.

I don’t know if the Drs in the U.K. limit time on meds. I have only been on it for a few months. I do think that the Dexa doesn’t measure the quality of your bones, so have decided to carry on horse riding. I only walk and trot when out hacking. Will canter in the ménage. My horse is a cob and very calm. I have been doing yoga for 45 years and am pretty fit.

My PT has said I need to jog more and do more bone building exercises. Also he said to avoid forward bends and excessive twists or extreme positions in yoga. He is training me to exercise safety. He is guarded about the riding though.

Have you been to the Melio Guide website?

Good you are working with PT. I cannot walk much due to major arthritis in feet. Maddening! So, I've just ordered a vibration platform (small one) which is supposed to help build bone (used by astronauts on the space station to build bone in zero gravity) and it also works leg muscles which I need. Should be interesting............ I'm hoping to start being able to walk longer if I can get a handle on the foot discomfort. Right now I'm limited to about 1/2 hr walking at a slow pace but at least I'm mobile now. Was not mobile 2 yrs ago, with the foot frac and extreme foot pain. So I've made progress and happy about that.
