Hi Everone

I am new to this site. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a few years ago and have tried Alendronic Acid, risedronic acid and ibandronate acid and had side effects to all of them. I then tried the six monthly Prolia injection to which I experienced lots of side effects for the duration of the six months. It has now been suggested to try Strontium Renelate. I am quite anxious about starting this as I am now feeling so much better having had four months break from the meds. I would be grateful if anyone has taken Strontium Renelate and if so how you got the on with it please. Many thanks.

Thank you. I hope you're getting on okay with Fosavance. Your sister is lucky to be able to tolerate Prolia. It would have been great if it had suited me.

Hi Mbe,

I am on strontium ranelate (Protelos) and have no side effects from it as far as I am aware. I find it great! After reading up about all the OP drugs, SR was the one that I felt was best for me. I did not get on with AA when that was prescribed by the GP because this is the first med they have to offer or another one from the same family, ie risedronate, another one I could not get on with as both gave me stomach/bowel problems.

Before being prescribed SR I had to use a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours. The readings must have been acceptable as the doctor at the hospital prescribed SR for me, no problem. I see this doctor yearly and he works in the endocrinology department.

I have a feeling not so many patients are prescribed strontium ranelate. Either because patients do not wish to be on it or the doctors are not so keen to prescribe this drug so much anymore. It did get some bad press some time ago.

Anyway, I am very happy to be on this OP drug.

Last I read it hadn't been approved for use everywhere. Maybe that's changed?

Hi Heron, strontium ranelate is prescribed in the UK. I know that as it is prescribed for me! ;) I am aware it is not available in some countries and the US springs to mind.

Hi Kaarina

Thank you for your response. It's encouraging to hear that SR is suiting you. I had the same problems as you with bowel/stomach problems on AA, Risedronic, and Ibandronate Acid. Hopefully Now I can pluck up some courage to take SR. I also walk daily and do classes at the gym. I will try K2 and Magnesium supplements too. Is there a particular dose age that you should take.

Hi Mbe_56

This is what I do.

I take the dosage that it says on the bottles that I buy. I buy Super K with Advanced K2 Complex from Life Extension and take one capsule daily.

I have recently bought Magnesium Glycinate and take two capsules daily as it says to do so on the bottle.

I hope you are also doing all the other things you can do to improve bone health - namely diet, supplements and appropriate exercise? I believe that even people who opt for the meds should do whatever they can to improve bone health. The meds may increase bone density but they are not guaranteed to promote bone strength.

I get out walking every day and always try to do at least 10,000+ steps daily. I use a simple pedometer and it is my best silent friend and goes everywhere with me! I use the exercise bike for 10+ minutes per day. I appreciate this is not weight-bearing exercise but good for general health. I hoop each day, do tai chi, stretching exercises and practice standing on one leg and then the other which I find difficult to do. :) I hardly sit down in the day which suits me fine. I also take K2 and magnesium supplements.
