I guess it was done under supervision.  I suppose we could develop our own version?

Well I don't see why not. It looks like you have to be careful to keep the back and the neck straight, but other than that it's just a case of having someone put the weight on your back, and taking it slowly. I've just received my weight vest, I wonder if that would do the job initially...

I got a "hypervest", wearing it right now, actually.  Have about 6 lbs in it now.  :)

Snap! That's what I have...just received it yesterday and have yet to sort out the weights. 6lbs is pretty good, I think I'll start a little below that. I'm off to bed now (UK), but I'll give it a shot tomorrow. By the way, I'm having my first pilates lesson in a couple of weeks so I'll mention the exercise to her and if she gives my any pointers I'll pass them on. Have a good weekend :)

Goodnight - I started with five pounds because I had been lugging around a backpack with two ankle weights in it, so had built up a bit of strength - boy, the vest is so much more comfortable.

Delighted to get this information, just what I've been looking for. I intend to go to a personal trainer, one who I know and trust, and get her help to create a strength training progressive programme. I've known for a number of years that I've spinal osteoporosis but there were few if any programmes available specifically for people with osteoporosis. At least now there is advice online. In the meantime on a weekly basis I walk, do barn and ceiles dances, Pilates and aqua aerobics. Not so keen on the gym!

I asked my physiotherapist about it and she said it would be a bad idea for me. I have polymyalgia rheumatica and that makes some things harder because there is a weakening of the muscles by steroid treatment, as well as certain vascular problems. However I do wear a weighted walking vest periodically and I am sure it has helped. Certainly my bone density has improved over the past year!

Hi I've only seen this today and thought I would throw in a comment that this was a trial on women with no back pain or history of back injury and would not recommend this to anyone who has a history, which I guess if you are in here you do have. #betterlatethannever
